The Trickster’s Return

Chapter 6: Enter The Shadow Clan

Floki stepped into the dense forest, the air heavy with mist and the promise of danger.

The map from the cartographer was in his hand, its ink glowing faintly under the system's overlay.

The Western Region's treacherous terrain stretched out before him, leading to Master Sho-Nuff, the Shadow cultivator.

The journey had been quiet, but Floki felt the presence of unseen eyes.

"Finally," he muttered, his staff tapping against the mossy ground. "I was getting bored."

The system pulsed in his vision, highlighting a faint energy signature nearby.

[Alert: Spirit Beast Detected – Rank: Low-Tier Threat]

Floki smirked. "Low-tier? Barely worth my time."

A shadow darted between the trees, its movements silent and predatory.

Floki readied his staff, his grin sharp as he turned to face the approaching threat.

"Come on, little beast. Let's see what you've got."

A wolf-like creature leapt from the shadows, its glowing red eyes fixed on Floki.

He sidestepped smoothly, the beast's claws scraping harmlessly against a nearby tree.

Floki brought his staff down hard, the crack of impact echoing through the forest as the beast crumpled.

"Too easy," he muttered, watching as the beast dissolved into faint energy.

The system's notification appeared again.

[Spirit Core Extracted. Compatibility: High for Shadow Path Enhancement]

Floki picked up the small core, feeling its faint energy pulse against his palm.

"This will come in handy," he said, pocketing the core as he continued deeper into the forest.

The forest opened into a wide clearing, its center dominated by a stone altar.

Floki's system pulsed again, displaying a notification.

[Trial Location Detected: Shadow Cultivation Path – Preliminary Test]

"So, this is the entrance exam?" Floki said, his tone laced with sarcasm. "How quaint."

He stepped toward the altar, his staff resting against his shoulder as the shadows around him deepened.

A voice echoed from the darkness, low and menacing.

"Who dares disturb the path of shadows?"

Floki rolled his eyes. "Name's Floki. Trickster extraordinaire. I'm here for the admission test."

The shadows shifted, and a figure emerged—a humanoid creature formed entirely of black mist, its eyes glowing with eerie light.

"Prove yourself worthy," the figure said. "Survive the Trial of Shadows."

Floki twirled his staff, his grin widening. "Let's get started then."

The figure dissolved into mist, and the clearing was plunged into complete darkness.

Floki's system activated, displaying faint outlines of his surroundings.

[Objective: Defeat Shadow Constructs – Time Limit: 5 Minutes]

From the void, shadowy figures emerged, each wielding jagged weapons of pure darkness.

Floki moved quickly, his staff spinning as he deflected the first attack.

"Is this it?" he taunted, striking one construct with enough force to shatter it into mist. "I expected more flair."

Another construct lunged, its blade aiming for his chest.

Floki sidestepped, his staff whistling through the air as it struck the figure's head.

"One down," he muttered. "Who's next?"

The constructs circled him, their movements coordinated but predictable.

Floki's system highlighted weak points, and he used them to his advantage, dismantling his enemies with precision.

"You call this a trial?" he said, his voice carrying through the clearing. "I've faced scarier things in bathhouses."

The last construct dissolved, and the darkness lifted slightly.

The voice returned, colder than before. "Impressive, but the trial is not yet complete."

A larger construct formed, its presence suffocating as it loomed over Floki.

Floki's grin didn't waver. "Finally, a challenge."

The construct charged, its massive blade carving through the air.

Floki ducked and countered, his staff striking the construct's leg with a satisfying crack.

The system pulsed, displaying the construct's weak points in glowing red.

"Thanks for the tip," Floki said, aiming his next strike at the construct's chest.

The blow connected, and the construct let out a guttural roar, its form flickering.

Floki pressed his advantage, his staff a blur as he unleashed a flurry of attacks.

The construct fell to its knees, its form dissolving into mist.

The clearing brightened, and the voice spoke again.

"You have proven yourself. The Path of Shadows welcomes you."

Floki straightened, his grin sharp as ever. "That's it? No grand applause?"

A faint chuckle echoed in the air. "Your journey has only begun."

The altar glowed, and a small black orb appeared, its energy radiating darkness.

Floki picked it up, feeling its power surge through him.

[Shadow Path Enhancement Acquired: Spectral Veil Technique Unlocked]

He examined the orb, his mind racing with possibilities.

"Not bad," he said, pocketing the orb. "Not bad at all."

The path ahead shimmered, revealing a winding trail deeper into the forest.

Floki adjusted his staff, his grin widening as he stepped forward.

The forest shifted around him, the shadows seeming to thicken and whisper with each step.

A faint glow appeared ahead, and the silhouette of a towering palace came into view, cloaked in layers of shadow.

As Floki approached, the Spectral Veil Technique activated instinctively.

The array concealing the palace shimmered before collapsing, revealing a sprawling compound of black stone.

Floki stepped into the open courtyard, his eyes narrowing as an outer core disciple approached.

"You must be the new recruit," the disciple said, his tone neutral. "Follow me."

Floki followed, his gaze taking in the stark contrast of the outer disciples' barracks—a barn-like structure with minimal furnishings.

The disciple handed him a bundle. "Training gear, bedding, and rules. Memorize them."

Floki held the bundle up, turning the coarse gray robes over in his hands. "You call this training gear? It's more like punishment attire."

The disciple's smirk widened. "You'll find it fitting soon enough. Consider it part of the initiation."

Floki dropped the robes onto a nearby cot, inspecting the straw-filled pillow with an exaggerated grimace. "And this? Am I supposed to sleep on it, or stuff it into the cracks of this place to keep the cold out?"

"Both, if you're smart," the disciple replied, leaning against a post. "You're in the Shadow Clan now. Comfort is a luxury you'll have to earn."

Floki's grin sharpened. "Good. I'd hate to get too comfortable. Might dull my edge."

The disciple's eyes narrowed slightly. "You're awfully confident for a new recruit. The last one to talk like that didn't last a week."

Floki twirled his staff casually, his tone laced with amusement. "I'm not the last one. I'm Floki. Try to keep up."

The disciple straightened, his smirk fading as he pointed toward a row of cots. "Your spot's over there. You'll find out soon enough that words mean little here. Actions do the talking."

Floki tossed the bundle onto his assigned cot, the bedding landing with a dull thud. "Actions? Oh, I've got plenty of those. Stick around, and you might even learn a thing or two."

The disciple gave him a final glance before turning away. "Training starts at dawn. Don't be late."

As the disciple left, Floki sat on the edge of his cot, his fingers idly tracing the carved patterns on his staff. Around him, other recruits moved about, some sparing him curious or wary looks.

A young recruit from a neighboring cot leaned over hesitantly. "You're new, aren't you? Where did you come from?"

Floki's grin widened, his tone light. "Farther than you'd believe. And you?"

The recruit shrugged. "Just a farmer's son. Thought joining the Shadow Clan would be my way out."

Floki chuckled softly. "And how's that working out for you?"

The recruit glanced at the worn bedding and cracked walls. "Not quite what I imagined. But at least it's better than plowing fields."

Floki leaned back, his eyes gleaming. "Well, stick close to me, kid. You might learn a few tricks that'll keep you alive longer than a week."

The recruit's brow furrowed, curiosity mingling with doubt. "What makes you so sure you'll last?"

Floki tilted his head, his grin turning sharp. "Because I'm not just here to last. I'm here to conquer."

Floki raised an eyebrow, inspecting the coarse grey robes and straw-filled pillow. "Charming."

The disciple smirked. "Welcome to the Shadow Clan, outsider. Let's see if you survive."

Floki chuckled, his grin never fading. "Oh, I plan to do more than survive."
