Chapter 20: Chapter 20: ‘Life's a pleasure and I am going to die
Elizabeth didn't know why she was so angry.
She just was.
[ This man... had no logic at all!
Who gives away over 17 billion just like that? ]
Edward was baffled too.
[ [ "What's wrong with her? Weren't you the one asking for the shares?" ] ]
[ [ "Fine, take the shares and let this disaster end. If I stay away from you, maybe I'll live a little longer." ] ]
[ ["You go play your role in the story, join someone's harem or whatever. I'll stay quietly up north, live my life as a rich man, and we'll both leave each other alone." ] ]
[ [ "Perfect." ] ]
But Elizabeth grew even angrier, when she heard what Edward had in mind.
[ Seventeen billion, a controlling 51% stake in Ninth Pharmaceuticals—all of it, just to… push me away?
To make me disappear from his life?
Did he really hate me that much?
Was she truly that unbearable? ]
Elizabeth felt she had never been so deeply insulted in her life.
A man would rather give up nearly 20 billion in assets than maintain any connection with her. What did that even mean?
To him, she was nothing short of a nightmare.
The humiliation was so intense that tears welled up in her eyes.
Seeing Elizabeth in distress, a few assistants nearby rushed over.
"Miss Lewis, what happened? Why are you... crying?" one of them asked nervously.
Edward casually remarked, "She just earned over 17 billion. Must be emotional."
Elizabeth snapped, "Leave us."
"Oh… alright. We'll be nearby. Call us if you need anything…"
"Go away!" Elizabeth shouted.
The assistants quickly retreated.
Elizabeth turned to Edward. "Am I really that unbearable to you?"
"Huh?" Edward was completely dumbfounded.
[ [ "Are you serious right now? You just made 17 billion! Go celebrate!" ] ]
[ [ You've earned me over 10 billion, Miss! Take the money and go bouncing! ] ]
[ [ "If you give me your shares , you can let me kowtow to you all you want. You've already taken the shares. Why are you angry?" ] ]
[ [ "Isn't this absurd?" ] ]
"I… I'm a bit lost here," Edward admitted. "Isn't this the result you wanted?"
Elizabeth grabbed the contract and tore it into pieces.
Edward was stunned.
"Dear Elizabeth…"
"Edward, I'm not like you. Every cent I've ever earned has been within the bounds of morality and the law. I've never threatened anyone's life to close a deal. Keep your shares."
"Oh," Edward said, still confused. "Are you… okay?"
"Do you find me annoying?"
"No, not at all," Edward scratched his cheek awkwardly. "You're actually kind of cute."
"Then why are you so desperate to push me away?"
[ [ "Was I that obvious?" ] ]
Edward felt a little guilty.
"No, it's just… haha, haven't you always hated me? Since we were kids, you've always looked down on me. Shouldn't you be happy if I disappear?"
Elizabeth took a deep breath. "I've changed my mind. I want to get to know you better."
Wiping away her tears, Elizabeth suddenly flashed a bright smile.
"From now on, I'll stick to you every single day. The more you try to avoid me, the more I'll show up in your face. I'll drive you crazy!"
Edward froze in terror.
"Why? Why would you do this?!"
He blurted out, "None of this makes sense! What's going on with you two? Victoria acts like this, now you too! What do you both want from me? Victoria looks down on me, thinks I'm a useless simp. And you… you've ignored me for years, barely even saying hello. Why now? Why all of a sudden?"
"Will you get engaged to Victoria?" Elizabeth asked.
"Engaged? Are you kidding me?" Edward exclaimed. "I still want to live a few more years!"
Elizabeth leaned forward, studying him carefully. "Alright then, get engaged to me."
Edward had just taken a sip of coffee and immediately choked, coughing and sputtering.
He clutched his chest, wiping his shirt as he stammered, "Miss, don't joke around! I'm not worthy! That's not funny!"
Elizabeth rested her elbow on the table, propping her chin in her palm, and smiled sweetly.
"Dear Edward, I think you've changed a lot over the years."
"Huh? Have I?"
"Though I don't know what kind of madness has taken over you lately, I think… you're actually quite a good person."
Edward sighed deeply. "I've got things to do. I'm leaving."
.....................…
Sitting in the back seat of the car, Edward silently stared out the window.
Things were taking a bizarre turn.
He could no longer keep Davis sealed away; either seal him forever or let him go entirely. This on-and-off sealing nonsense was driving him insane.
He had to release Davis soon and let him deal with the harem of female leads. Otherwise, why were all these women circling around him?
First, Victoria, who was normally cold and distant, suddenly agreed to an engagement yesterday and even tried to kiss him today.
Now, Elizabeth's gaze towards him also seemed... off. She even joked about wanting to marry him.
Even if it was a joke, that was not something he could afford to joke about.
If things continued this way, something was bound to go wrong.
No, he had to make them hate him, annoy them so much that they'd willingly stay far, far away from him.
Too many female leads had shown up today—he needed a break.
Just then, Henry White called, saying his god-grandfather wanted to see Edward.
Edward wasn't keen on going initially, but thinking about it—there were still long hours until noon tomorrow. Wandering outside meant he might bump into another female lead.
Alright! He would head to the White family estate, drink with Henry until dawn, sleep until noon, and avoid all disasters.
"Brother Davis, your efficiency really needs improvement. Please hurry up and deal with these 'fairy spirits.' I feel like I'm living like a fugitive."
At the White family estate, after chatting briefly with Grandpa Robert, Edward and Henry headed up to Henry's floor.
The two sat on the balcony, watching the sunset, drinking red wine, and smoking cigars.
Henry said, "So, how's it going with Victoria? Did you seal the deal?"
Edward chuckled. "Seal what deal? I sent her off after she woke up."
Henry was visibly impressed and gave Edward a thumbs-up. "Impressive! The self-control! I, Henry White, respect only you in this world."
"You're not getting any younger, you know. Find something productive to do. You can't just waste your life idling around."
"I heard you saw my sister?"
"Yeah, I did."
At that moment, Catherine entered the hall.
She had just been arguing with Henry about an expense. But upon entering, she spotted not just her brother but also a familiar figure sitting on the balcony, smoking a cigar.
Henry grinned. "I suggest you break things off with Victoria and pursue my sister instead. After you two split, she hasn't been with anyone else. If you didn't claim her first time, then it's still intact."
"That confident, huh? Her curves look quite... developed. Are you sure it's still 'original'?"
Catherine was fuming.
These two! Together, they were nothing but trouble.
One was her first love, the other was her brother, both of whom should have been closest to her. Yet, here they were, talking about her in such a... disrespectful tone.
Henry continued, "I'm 100% sure! After you two broke up, she threw herself into work. She worked over ten hours a day, like a madwoman."
"Six months later, she took over branch management. She became so focused on work that no one dared approach her."
Edward said, "I know. Is she still that intense now?"
"No, she's eased up. She doesn't need to push herself so hard anymore," Henry replied. "She's in full control of the company now. This is your chance! If you show even half the enthusiasm you showed Victoria, I guarantee she'll be your little pony, yours to ride at will."
Catherine was on the verge of exploding.
How could her own brother talk about her like this? It was infuriating!
But Edward suddenly turned serious.
"Hey, enough. Don't talk about your sister like that. Show some respect."
Henry shrugged. "It's not like I'm talking to outsiders. You're one of us! I'm telling you, if you make a move while my grandpa's still alive, no one in the family will oppose you. And you've got me backing you!"
Edward gazed at the setting sun, smiled bitterly, and shook his head. "It's impossible between us now."
"Why? Just because of that little incident back then? Come on, every rich kid has their wild phase. As long as you treat her well now, our family will support you."
Edward thought to himself, You don't know the full story. This isn't just between us—it involves a major protagonist. I'm not one to shy away from challenges, but there are some battles I don't dare to fight.
Edward smiled. "You should focus on yourself. Maybe settling down would make you more mature. Having a family gives you responsibility—it changes you."
Henry sighed. "It just doesn't seem realistic for me."
"Why not?"
Edward turned to Henry. "Listen, life is about family—your wife, your children, and a warm home. Imagine having someone who truly loves you. Just seeing her smile would warm your heart."
"You'd care for each other during the day, and at night... well, you'd share a bed and keep each other warm. That's true happiness."
"When you have a child, watching that little life come into the world, hearing them call you 'Dad'—that's worth a hundred times more than fooling around with those so-called fairies in nightlife venues."
Catherine froze.
Did... did this guy just say something so profound?
Unconsciously, she smiled softly.
Henry stared at Edward as if seeing a stranger.
"Damn! When did you become so... wise? You're supposed to be a ruthless businessman, not some enlightened sage!"
Edward sighed. "The true path is often hidden behind chaos. No matter how dazzling the world seems, a man must remain steadfast. Don't get swept away by indulgence. Hold onto what truly matters in life."
Both Henry and Catherine were stunned.
This guy... actually made sense.
But just as quickly, Edward reverted to his usual self.
"Don't worry, though. I'm not turning into a monk anytime soon. A man needs his meat, after all."
Henry laughed. "Oh, so you have a new target, huh? How does she compare to my sister?"
"Your sister, huh…" Edward smirked. "Her figure's amazing. Did her chest... grow again? Looks like it's ready to burst out of her clothes at any second."
Catherine's face turned crimson with anger.
These two idiots! Just when she thought they were having a proper conversation, they went back to their nonsense.
Henry laughed. "Come on, tell me the truth. Back then, did you or did you not get my sister?"
"No!"
"I don't believe you!"
Edward grinned mischievously. "I swear, everything was ready that night. Your sister was lying there, all flushed, clutching the blanket nervously…"
"And then?!"
"And then, you idiot, you started a fight with someone and called me for help. I had to pull up my pants and rush out!"
"Wait… was that the fight with Old Six?"
"Exactly!"
The two burst into laughter.
Despite the absurdity, reminiscing about those wild youthful days brought a strange sense of nostalgia.
Catherine walked over, stone-faced. "More wine?"
"Yeah, open another bottle," Henry replied casually.
Edward leaned closer to Henry and smirked. "You have no idea what kind of moment you ruined for me that night…That day, your sister's state, oh man—her face was as red as a monkey's backside. She was lying there, already stripped bare, nervously tugging at the corner of the blanket with her teeth, not resisting at all, and I just…"
Henry White froze, 'Say it! Say it!'
But as Edward turned his head, he met Catherine's icy glare.
[ [ OK, I will dead. ] ]
