Chapter 23: Chapter 23: A Day in the Life of Davis

Victoria said, "I need to get engaged to you."

Elizabeth, who already disliked Victoria, couldn't hide her jealousy and let out a mocking snort.

"What a joke. Edward chased you for three years, and you played the role of an untouchable goddess. Now that he's in high demand, you come crawling back?"

Victoria shot a cold glare at Elizabeth.

"And I seem to recall you couldn't even be bothered to talk to Edward before. What's going on these past few days? Stopped studying medicine to compete for a man?"

Elizabeth wasn't about to back down. She stepped closer to Victoria and said with a sly grin, "If I really wanted to compete, everyone else would just have to watch."

Victoria smiled faintly. "Maybe let your chest rest for a bit and focus on developing your brain instead."

Elizabeth smirked. "And you should reconsider your wardrobe. Don't pretend this is just your style—I know exactly what you're trying to do. Flashing your legs to win Edward's attention?"

Victoria blushed slightly. "What I wear and how I present myself is nobody's business but mine."

"Of course." Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Not that I care to hear your excuses. I'm too busy growing my brain, and it's pretty obvious what's on yours."

Edward rushed to intervene.

"Alright, alright! Enough already. Let's go before we disturb the officers any further."

They stepped outside into the bright sunlight, greeted by a line of luxury cars.

A Bentley pulled up, and the door opened.

Edward hesitated, but Elizabeth looped her arm through his and said, "Let's go, Dear Edward. Catherine's waiting for you in the car."

Victoria's face turned pale as she clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging into her palms.

She stood there, silently hoping Edward would choose to go with her and leave the others behind.

But Edward disappointed her.

"Well, Victoria, take care on your way home. Thanks again." He gave her a polite smile before walking away.

Victoria watched him go, a pang of bitterness rising in her chest.

In the past, Edward would have dropped everything to follow her.

But now, he was no longer the same man. He seemed like a completely different person—polite but distant. No longer orbiting her like a devoted satellite, no longer lavishing her with attention, no longer treating her as the center of his world.

His eyes were clearer now, steady and resolute, with none of the slyness or immaturity he once had.

Victoria felt an inexplicable void in her heart, a deep sense of loss.

Victoria is very heartbreaking to realise that Edward, will never again be submissive to himself, never again surround himself with warmth, never again greet in the morning and evening, send gifts every day ...

The special treatment that he used to enjoy as a matter of course, and even the one-sided adoration and pursuit that he was so tired of, is no longer there.

But she don't know why, but she seem to suddenly rely on him.

A huge emptiness and sadness suddenly rose in her own heart.

Why?

You used to say you'd do anything for me. And now, in front of everyone, you humiliate me?

What were those three years to you? How could I suddenly mean so little to you?

Victoria stubbornly stood her ground, her gaze fixed on Edward.

Feeling uncomfortable under her intense stare, Edward scratched his head awkwardly and forced a smile.

"Well, you should head home and get some rest. You must be tired after last night. I'll come see you later, okay?"

Victoria took a deep breath and pursed her lips, feeling as though she had regained a sliver of dignity.

"Don't push yourself too hard. Rest up first, then give me a call."

Edward was stunned.

[ What? Since when did Victoria care about my well-being? ]

"Uh, okay. Sure." He nodded stiffly.

Victoria smiled warmly. "I'll wait for your call."

Her voice, usually icy, was now soft and gentle, with a hint of tenderness and longing.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes dramatically, looking as though she might gag.

Victoria shot her a glare before turning and walking to her car.

Anna opened the car door, but Victoria turned back to flash Edward one last smile before stepping in.

Edward shivered.

[ [ What's going on with her? Why does she suddenly feel… terrifying? ] ]

[ [ Could she actually be into me now? What did I even do to deserve this? ] ]

Elizabeth sneered from the side. "Don't tell me you're thinking about being her lapdog again. Have some self-respect, will you?"

Edward quickly shook his head. "What are you talking about? Let's just go."

Once inside the car, Catherine threw herself into Edward's arms, crying uncontrollably.

Edward immediately raised his arms over his head in surrender, his face full of confusion.

[ [ Why is everything so chaotic? Yesterday, she hated me; today, she's crying on me. What am I supposed to do? ] ]

Elizabeth smirked. "What are you waiting for? Go on, comfort her."

Awkwardly, Edward patted Catherine on the back. "It's… it's okay now. Everything's fine."

"I'm sorry," Catherine whispered as she finally pulled away.

Edward exhaled in relief, knowing full well how dangerous it was to be this close to someone like Catherine.

"It's my fault," Edward said. "I shouldn't have said those careless things to upset you. I promise to watch my words from now on."

Catherine managed a smile through her tears. "At least you know. What girl wouldn't be angry if she overheard someone talking about her like that? But when I heard you went through so much trouble to save me, I felt really bad."

Edward felt uneasy.

[ [ Wait, this conversation isn't going in a good direction… This feels dangerous! ] ]

[ [Why am I getting along so well with them? Why am I even in this car? ] ]

[ [Okay, I've seen she's fine. Time to leave. ] ]

[ [ Davis, you've seen it all, I took good care of your wife, she didn't get eaten by anyone, don't blame me if something happens in the future. ] ]

Catherine noticed Edward's distracted expression.

"Dear Edward, actually… I don't have a boyfriend."

"I know."

"I mean it. I've never had one."

"Uh-huh, got it." Edward quickly cut her off. "Alright, since you're okay now, I'll head home. Take care!"

"Wait, you're leaving already?"

"Yes, yes, I've got things to do. Goodbye!" Edward hurriedly stepped out of the car.

Catherine watched him leave, her thoughts swirling. From last night to today, it all felt like a dream.

Edward had re-entered her life, this time as a leading figure, stirring up feelings she thought she'd buried long ago.

When I was a child, things resurfaced in front of my eyes, and the innocent Edward who took himself to play hide-and-seek and share snacks was resurrected in my heart.

The Edward who fought with other boys for himself, who was the first to find himself to share snacks, who avoided himself because of his shyness after secondary school, and who was chased by himself, has now grown into a real proud boy.

Everyone is not a child anymore, loved, hated, sweet and sad ...

Round and round it goes, it's still you? It's pretty good too.

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "Catherine, don't tell me you're falling for him again."

"What? No way!" Catherine denied hastily. "I have so much work to do. I need to get back to the office."

"Really? Nothing at all?"

"Nothing, I swear!"

"Good. Just making sure."

............

Davis sensed something was wrong.

Squatting on the toilet, his stomach churned in agony.

From yesterday morning, to this morning, one has spent almost most of the time in the company of the toilet.

What did I even eat? How did I end up with such a terrible case of diarrhea?

As the saying goes, even the strongest man can't withstand three bouts of the runs.

Sure, Davis considered himself strong, but this was far beyond three rounds.

Renowned for his unparalleled medical skills, he was utterly baffled and helpless against this 24-hour nightmare of relentless stomach trouble.

Acupuncture? Useless. Hot compresses? Pointless. Herbal remedies? No effect. Inner energy techniques? Forget it.

The only constant in his life now was the toilet—a steadfast companion, sharing in his suffering, never abandoning him.

Davis felt utterly drained, practically dehydrated.

God please! I have so much to accomplish, so many women to woo! You can't let a hero like me—a man of extraordinary talents—die on a toilet like this, can you?

Outside the bathroom door, a stunning female assassin knelt on one knee.

"Master! It's time to move out."

Davis groaned, on the verge of tears. "Yeah, I'm fucking dead."

"May I ask, Master, are you still…diarrhea?"

Sweat beaded on Davis's forehead. "Now's not the time for flowery language. Just get to the point."

"The boss has ordered you to expedite the unification of the four major families in Snow City."

"No problem! Everything is under control!" Davis said through gritted teeth. "Victoria's situation has hit a small bump, and Elizabeth's side is a bit tricky too. But today, I'll turn it all around. Help me arrange my schedule."

"Understood."

"First, I need to treat Sophia's mother. Her condition can't wait any longer; delaying it further could lead to complications."

"Yes, Master."

"Then, I need to attend the signing between Victoria and David. I must expose his true colors and save Victoria's company!"

"Got it!"

"Finally, tonight I need to stop Joseph's conspiracy and save Catherine."

"Understood!"

"As long as I handle these three tasks, everything will be back on track."

"You're incredible, Master! Shall I prepare a portable toilet or perhaps some adult diapers for you?"

Davis glared at the door. "Do you think you're funny?"

"Apologies, Master. Humor is not in my skill set. I only act based on logic, as you well know."

Davis rolled his eyes. "Just cooperate from the shadows. Today will be my… day…"

"Master? Your day to what? I didn't catch that."

"Wait… wait a moment…"

"Is today the day you have diarrhoea?"

"Get out!
