Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Elizabeth, the Little Witch
The group turned their heads to see Elizabeth walking toward them.
Today, Elizabeth wore tall boots, a trench coat, and sunglasses.
For once, she appeared poised and mature. Despite her petite frame of just over 167 cm, her well-proportioned figure made her look as if she were 170 cm tall.
Her makeup added to her air of maturity, and she approached with a serious expression.
Edward frowned at her. "Why are you getting involved?"
"Seeing injustice and stepping in to help," she replied coolly.
Davis clasped his hands in a polite greeting. "Miss Elizabeth, long time no see."
Elizabeth wrinkled her nose. "Ugh, what's that smell? Did you fall into a cesspit?"
Davis inwardly sighed. "I really need to find a place to clean up. Smelling like this is unacceptable."
Sophia turned to Elizabeth anxiously. "Miss Lewis, Mr. Edward wants to fire me!"
"Don't worry," Elizabeth reassured her. "He wouldn't dare."
Edward chuckled. "What wouldn't I dare? When Edward does something, I'm always free and unfettered, never caring about others' opinions."
"Oh? Is that so?" Elizabeth arched an eyebrow.
Edward's inner monologue kicked in:
[ [ Elizabeth is tricky to deal with. I'll need to handle her carefully, especially with Davis here. He's a martial arts expert and itching to kill me. I absolutely can't provoke him. ] ]
Elizabeth squinted slightly. So, this Davis is a formidable fighter and has a grudge against Edward. I see now.
Edward noticed her calculating expression and grew uneasy.
[ [ What's this brat planning? Does she think she can outplay me? She's still too green for that. ] ]
Elizabeth's faint smirk deepened. She thought, Oh, my dear Edward, I've already figured out most of your tricks. Getting the upper hand on you doesn't seem so hard anymore.Afraid of Davis, aren't you? But I must admit, this Davis carries an air of someone willing to charge headlong into disaster. If he's as powerful as he seems, he might just be your nemesis, dear Edward.
Edward's confidence faltered as he observed Elizabeth's growing smugness.
[ [ Why is this brat so self-assured? Firing Sophia—what can she do about it? Davis is dead set on women from the three major families. I can't compete with him over that. That would be courting death. ] ]
[ [ Sophia is just one of his harem members, not even a main character. But since she's part of his chosen group, I can't touch her. ] ]
[ [ Determined,] ] Edward thought, [ [ I'll deal with Elizabeth and her antics later. Today, I just need to get Sophia out of the way. ] ]
Outwardly, it seemed like Edward and Elizabeth were locked in a fierce standoff.
In reality, their minds were engaged in several rounds of mental sparring.
Edward finally said, "In any case, I'll strictly adhere to labor laws and provide Sophia with generous severance and compensation. No one can fault me."
"Oh? Is that so?" Elizabeth asked with feigned innocence.
"Isn't it?" Edward countered with a smug grin.
Elizabeth smiled. "Mr. Edward, may I have a word with you in private?"
Edward tried to reassure Davis. "Davis, please wait a moment. I guarantee you'll leave here with Sophia today."
Davis was bewildered. What is this? I haven't even done anything yet, and he's already surrendering? Is my presence alone this overwhelming?
Elizabeth pulled Edward aside. "You can't fire Sophia."
"There's no room for negotiation," Edward replied nonchalantly, straightening his clothes. "It's already decided."
"Oh, dear Edward, you can fire her. But if you do, I'll have to tell Davis about what you've done to me."
Edward froze. "What have I done to you?"
"Well, that depends on how I spin the story, doesn't it?"
A sense of foreboding crept over Edward.
[ [ How does she know Davis is my Achilles' heel? This brat must have been sent by the heavens to torment me. ] ]
Elizabeth continued with a mischievous smile, "I could say you touched me, kissed me, and harassed me. I could say you drugged me and took my innocence—oh, and not just once, but multiple times. I could also mention that you hit me, yelled at me, and forced me to wear stockings and dance on a pole. Oh, and I could also say—"
"Enough, enough!"
[ [ Does she need to go into this much detail? Any one of these accusations would already be a death sentence in Davis's eyes. Those last few would pretty much guarantee my annihilation. ] ]
Feigning indifference, Edward replied, "Do you think he'd believe you?"
Elizabeth grinned and gestured toward Davis. "Take a look at him."
"Mm?"
"Does he strike you as someone with a forgiving nature? Do you think he'd believe me or you?"
Edward turned to glance at Davis, narrowing his eyes in irritation. He silently cursed Elizabeth.
Right. Let's be honest. Protagonists in web novels—since when are they magnanimous?
They'll act all tolerant and virtuous when it's about winning people over. But when their love interest is involved, they turn into vengeful lunatics.
Don't talk about believing or not believing, if you are the protagonist, do you believe in the words of the heroine or a villain?
Does Davis need to believe her? No, he just needs an excuse—an excuse to kill me.
One has always been respectful in front of Davis, one has just never given him that reason to come down on him.
Now if Elizabeth complains, all her efforts will be useless.
Davis do not even need to go through the brain, do not need to ask the true or false, shoot himself he pain, the plot is also smooth ...
Edward forced a smile.
"Uh… Dear Elizabeth, let's talk, alright?" Edward decided to reason with her.
"Look, those two are a match made in heaven, a perfect pair, don't you think? They're a talented man and a beautiful woman—meant to be together! We just need to give them a little push, and they'll live happily ever after. Isn't that a wonderful thing? Why not help them out?"
Elizabeth looked at him coolly. "Davis? A talented man? You must be joking. If anyone's talented, it's you. Tell me, why are you so afraid of him? Why don't you just fight him head-on?"
"Oh no, no, no, please don't say that!" Edward panicked. "Dear Elizabeth, I beg you, have mercy on me. Making it to the third day of my life here hasn't been easy. Just let him take Sophia. I'm not heartless—I'll keep paying her salary every month, even if she's not here, for the rest of her life. How about that?"
Elizabeth pouted and shook her head. "Nope."
"That's not good enough?! Why not?!" Edward screamed internally, I don't understand!
Elizabeth giggled. "I just think it's fun. I'm not letting you fire her. You must have some ulterior motive. I'll wait until I figure out what you're up to before deciding whether Sophia should go."
Edward was about to lose his mind. "Lady, you're going to get me killed! I swear, I don't have any bad intentions!"
"If you die, you die. The most important thing is that we all have fun."
Edward fumed, "Elizabeth! You're pushing me too far!"
Elizabeth paused, then dramatically walked forward with a pitiful expression. Though not a single tear fell, she wailed convincingly, "Davis, do you know what Edward did to me? Yesterday, he gave me this strange pill… After I took it, my body got hot, and I couldn't help wanting to take off my clothes. Then he took me to…"
Edward rushed forward to pull her back.
Davis erupted in anger. "Edward, what did you do to Elizabeth?! Ah! My overwhelming aura of dominance is about to explode!"
Edward was on the verge of collapse. Holding onto Elizabeth, he pleaded with Davis, "No! No! Brother, your… aura, your… uh, you're a dominating force! Wait, I mean, your aura, please calm it down!"
Edward hastily explained, "The pill I gave her… was for an upset stomach! She suddenly had stomach issues yesterday, and that medicine just has a side effect of making people feel hot."
"As for where I took her… it was to a small clinic. That clinic specializes in treating stomach issues!"
Davis glanced at Elizabeth.
Edward looked at her with a near-desperate expression.
[ [ Miss, this is no joke! If you keep this up, I'll really die here today! ] ]
Elizabeth saw Edward's terrified look and couldn't help but laugh.
"So… Sophia?" she asked.
Edward sighed heavily, defeated. "I won't fire her. Ever. As long as you don't give the word, she'll stay."
"And…"
"And what now?" Edward thought, [ [ What more do you want?! ] ]
Elizabeth smirked. "You also can't force her to leave or marginalize her. She must remain by your side as your personal secretary."
Edward's internal monologue ran wild:
[ [ If you weren't the leading lady, I'd have crushed you ages ago! This brat! ] ]
[ [ What does this even have to do with you?! ] ]
[ [ Who I keep as my secretary—how is that your business? What do you gain from meddling?! ] ]
Elizabeth held back her laughter, finding the situation endlessly amusing. Leading lady? That's what he calls me? How interesting.
Sure, it has nothing to do with me. But I can tell you're hiding secrets, and I can't let your schemes succeed.
Smart of me, right?
"Do you agree or not?" Elizabeth asked smugly.
Edward opened his mouth, struggling for words. Seeing him hesitate, Elizabeth pretended to cry again, turning to Davis. "Davis, yesterday, he kept staring at my chest and—"
Edward quickly pulled her back, screaming internally:
[ [ You win! ] ]
[[ You're my ancestor! ] ]
Davis glared at Edward, furious. "What did you do to Elizabeth's chest?!"
Edward raised a trembling finger. "Brother, calm your aura. Please, calm it down!"
Turning to Sophia, he declared, "Sophia, I officially retract your dismissal. Work hard—I believe in you."
"Thank you, Mr. Edward! Thank you so much!"
Edward turned to Elizabeth. "Happy now?"
Elizabeth was victorious and clearly enjoying herself.
Davis stepped forward, shielding Elizabeth behind him as he glared at Edward. His expression was menacing. "What did you do to Elizabeth's chest? Answer me!"
Edward was speechless. "I…"
Before he could finish, Elizabeth pushed Davis aside. "Ugh, you stink. Go take a shower. You smell like you just crawled out of a cesspit."
"Dear Elizabeth, whatever that beast did to your chest, I'll avenge you!"
"Ugh, what could he even do to my chest? And what does it have to do with you? Get lost!"
"Dear Elizabeth, don't be afraid of him. I, Davis, will protect you!"
"Can you please just take a shower first?"
"But…"
"But what?! You stink! It's disgusting. I was just messing around with Dear Edward. Go stand over there."
Edward nearly coughed up blood.
[ [ No! Don't provoke him! ] ]
[ [ Male protagonists are all unhinged. When you provoke him, he won't hate you—he'll hate me! ] ]
Sure enough, Davis turned sharply, glaring at Edward with such fury that Edward's knees nearly gave out.
