Chapter 6
Over there, when Ling’an Che learned that Mo Jin’er had drunk the contraceptive soup, he didn’t say much. In the end, he merely sent someone to the State Duke’s mansion to fetch the old lady out.
Mo Jin’er got out of bed today, barely ate a couple of bites of food.
When her grandmother appeared at the doorway, leaning on a cane, a faint light of joy flickered in her eyes. She eagerly got out of bed and rushed into her grandmother’s arms, feeling more and more aggrieved but trying hard to suppress her emotions. Sniffling, she finally looked up at her grandmother.
“Grandmother, have you been well at the Grand Duke’s mansion these days…?”
The old lady’s hand stiffened. Her face, full of wrinkles, gently stroked Mo Jin’er’s hair. The girl in front of her, whom she had raised from a young age, had grown from a soft and cute little bundle into a stunning beauty.
She usually stayed within the house, not stepping outside, yet she had been taken by the Grand Duke and Duchess to bear the blame. Now, in this situation, who knew if it was a blessing or a curse…
“Jin’er, I’ve been fine these past few days. Has the young general and his men been giving you a hard time here?” Though the old lady was elderly and blind in one eye, she had heard some things and could discern quite a bit from a single glance, having lived for so many years.
Miss Mo Jin’er, in her current appearance, was likely hard for any man to resist…
She herself was unaware of her beauty. Her legitimate sister constantly belittled her as stupid, incompetent, and unattractive. At times, when she looked in the mirror, she doubted her sister’s words, thinking she wasn’t that bad…
No matter what, the old lady, seeing all this, only wished for them to live a simple life.
Even when the Duchess and her legitimate daughter secretly discussed marrying her off to a poor scholar, Mo Jin’er had some expectations. She thought it would be fine, as long as they respected each other. What was wrong with marrying a scholar? She herself wasn’t highly educated.
But all these fantasies had now been shattered. The old lady looked at her beautiful but tearful granddaughter, sighed deeply in her heart.
“I… I’m fine…” Mo Jin’er, feeling uneasy, let go of her grandmother and hesitantly spoke. However, with her eyes slightly lowered, it was evident she was sad and upset.
The old lady hugged her, her voice trembling slightly, “Jin’er… did the young general mention when he would let you go?”
“I don’t know if he means what he says.” At the mention of Ling’an Che, her eyes filled with mist. Still, she forced a smile and said, “But he did say he would let me go back once Baozhu’s face is healed.”
“The young general shouldn’t go back on his word. Jin’er, stay calm. No matter what happens, don’t do anything rash, understand?”
The old lady comforted her, fearing she might do something foolish.
Mo Jin’er’s fair and delicate face showed a bright, albeit forced, smile. “Don’t worry, grandmother. I’m really okay.”
But she really wanted to go home…
Even though her father, stepmother, and stepsister at the Grand Duke’s mansion didn’t like her, living quietly with her grandmother in their small courtyard was better than being here…
She stayed in Ling’an Che’s courtyard. She wanted to return to her previous room but found walking painful, so she gave up.
After her grandmother left, her suppressed sorrow seemed to ease a bit.
However, this brief sense of relief vanished the moment Ling’an Che appeared.
Her heart involuntarily tightened.
Now, her living conditions were better than at the Duke’s mansion, but she would rather give all this up to go home…
Recalling last night’s events, her beautiful face turned pale and dazed, her delicate fingers clenching tightly.
“Have you eaten?” Ling’an Che, rarely home these past two days, smiled as he approached, brushing aside a lock of hair from her cheek.
She didn’t respond, merely pressing her lips together, her downcast eyes avoiding his gaze.
“Little Jin’er, how should you thank me for letting you see that old lady?” He intertwined his fingers with hers, his tone intimate, as he pulled her into his arms.
She lacked the strength to resist. Even if she had the strength, she couldn’t break free. Her eyes and nose reddened, her lips pressed stubbornly together. After a moment of hesitation, she finally said, “If not for you, I could see my grandmother every day.”
When he bullied her, he would say all sorts of sweet words, acting as if he treated her very well.
Sweetheart, darling, good girl… He was nothing but shameless…
Ling’an Che…
Sometimes Mo Jin’er would repeat his name in her mind and feel like crying. She never imagined he was this kind of person.
That fantasy had long since shattered. Now, facing him, she felt only tremors and fear…
Nervousness, unease…, Sadness…
“Sharp-tongued,” he chuckled, his slender fingers brushing her teeth before kissing her neck.
Her tears welled up as she lay on the bed, sobbing quietly. She didn’t even dare to bite him. Yesterday, when she did bite him, she paid the price by fainting several times…
Some war hero, he was nothing but a villain…
Baozhu tried several times to visit her but was turned away by the guards. Puzzled, she turned to her maid Que’er, innocently asking, “Que’er, why is Jin’er so busy that she can’t see me?”
Que’er rolled her eyes inwardly but patiently replied, “Miss, let’s not concern ourselves with her. She’s not a good person.”
“Que’er, you’re not allowed to speak ill of Jin’er.” Baozhu pouted. “She is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. I like her; she’s my friend. Don’t call her a bad person.”
Que’er sighed inwardly and nodded, “Alright, I won’t say it anymore. Don’t be angry, Miss.”
Baozhu’s angry face was adorable, her pouting and puffing cheeks making Que’er smile despite herself. She looked over at the tightly closed courtyard, frowning slightly.
“Que’er, do you think Jin’er might be bullied by Brother Ling?”
Que’er kept a straight face, “Miss, you don’t understand. Many concubine-born daughters would be eager to catch the eye of a nobleman, even if it means becoming a concubine.”
“Ah?” Baozhu didn’t quite get it.
Que’er pursed her lips. Although Mo Jin’er pretended well, appearing to bond with her young mistress, her intentions were clear to anyone. She had quickly caught the attention of the young general…
Mo Jin’er met Baozhu again several days later. She forced a smile, her body still unwell but bearing it quietly.
Ling’an Che finally let her out. She didn’t want to stay in that courtyard any longer.
Baozhu was overjoyed. Mo Jin’er tried to keep her spirits up but felt increasingly unwell.
As they walked along the water pavilion, Baozhu holding her hand, she gradually grew weaker. Her stomach ached, and she eventually collapsed, the scenery blurring before her eyes.
On a soft bed, the beautiful yet pale and fragile girl lay quietly, sleeping. A white-robed female doctor, after examining her, left the room.
“How is she?” Ling’an Che asked in a magnetic voice, his tone indifferent.
The female doctor frowned slightly, her expression cold but tinged with helplessness. “This girl’s health is weak. You should abstain from intimacy for a month.”
He showed a hint of surprise, clicked his tongue but remained silent.
The female doctor continued, “You’re a soldier, but she’s just a delicate girl. How can she withstand such treatment? She’s hurt now; you need to restrain yourself.”
“In battles, camp prostitutes could handle multiple men a day without issues… She’s too fragile,” Ling’an Che’s eyes darkened.
The female doctor was almost furious, struggling to keep her composure. “Ling’an Che, is this your first concubine? Don’t you know to be gentle? Comparing her to camp prostitutes?!”
“Her health has been improving lately, but she’s still too delicate. By the way, I’ve heard your Medicine King Valley has a substance called charm fragrance?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Why not use it to change her constitution…”
After all, he had never fully enjoyed himself. It had only been a few days, and she was already sick.
“You’re as despicable as ever… Yet many girls in the capital harbor feelings for you…” The female doctor gritted her teeth. “Charm fragrance can indeed improve a woman’s constitution, but are you sure you want to use it on her?”
Turning a perfectly good girl into something else…
“I advise you to think carefully. If you truly like this girl, don’t do such a thing… You’ll regret it later.”
The female doctor was Su Qinqin, a medicine immortal from the Medicine King Valley. She had passed through the capital and was called by her junior brother to help treat a patient. Only after seeing the patient did she realize the severity of the situation. Her junior brother had a woman, and he had bullied her into sickness. Listening to his outrageous request to use charm fragrance, she could only try to talk some sense into him.
“Senior sister, I never said I liked her. She’s just a little plaything I picked up by chance. Sure, she’s been amusing lately, but I’ve been quite bored recently…”
Ling’an Che, feeling rather bored, chuckled. On the table, Su Qinqin had already placed the charm fragrance.
In the room, the girl’s eyes remained closed, her pale face and trembling eyelashes betraying her consciousness. She didn’t dare open her eyes, her delicate fingers gripping the blanket tightly, having heard every word from the next room.
A tear fell from her eye. She wanted to get up and run, but her head was dizzy, and her body had no strength.
So, the person she once liked was this cruel…
She didn’t know what charm fragrance was, but it didn’t sound like anything good…
