There are still five minutes until the hero escapes from marriage.

Chapter 9 - I am the heroine

Gu Ruoxian frowned and was about to speak when Wen Zhao’s face appeared in the video.

She leaned against Gu Xianting, their postures intimate. His expression froze for a moment but quickly returned to normal.

“Sister, I said I’d let Xianting contact you later. I wasn’t lying,” Wen Zhao said with a bright smile.

She didn’t look like someone capable of kidnapping her husband.

“Is something wrong at the company?” Gu Xianting asked.

Gu Ruoxian hesitated before speaking, “The company is fine. You’ve taken care of everything beforehand.”

He seemed relieved, “I thought something had gone wrong. I told my secretary not to bother me during my break. I haven’t had a vacation all year.”

He made it sound like he was so dedicated to his work!

“I’m taking a rare break. Sister, please handle things for me,” he said, his eyes softening. “I’ve been too busy to spend time with Zhao Zhao.”

Gu Ruoxian asked, You mean busy with Su Mengyao, right?!

“So, I plan to make up for lost time and give Zhao Zhao a perfect honeymoon,” he said. “Sister, do you have something urgent to discuss?”

Internally ranting, Gu Ruoxian maintained her composure. Seeing Wen Zhao’s face in the video, she felt a bit awkward.

“Sister, do you need to talk to Xianting privately? I can step out for a bit,” she offered considerately.

Soon, her figure disappeared from the video, her footsteps fading away.

“Is she really gone?” Gu Ruoxian asked.

Gu Xianting glanced to the side, “She’s gone. Sister, I’ve married Zhao Zhao now. There’s nothing she can’t hear. Please, don’t do this again.”

“It’s about Mengyao,” she said, watching for his reaction.

As expected, his expression froze upon hearing Su Mengyao’s name. After a long pause, he said, “Sister, you don’t need to tell me about her anymore.”

She couldn’t believe her ears. Her brother, who always lost his mind at the mention of Su Mengyao, had said this?

Was it because of the distance? Her influence couldn’t reach him here?

“If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up now. I need to take Zhao Zhao out for dinner,” he said, moving to end the call.

“Wait! Su Mengyao was framed by Wen Zhao and ended up in the police station. I can’t handle this alone,” Gu Ruoxian hurriedly said.

Gu Xianting’s expression darkened for a moment, “Sister, Zhao Zhao has been with me the whole time. How could she have framed her? Please, don’t say such things.”

With that, he cut the video call, looking toward Wen Zhao sitting on the couch.

The woman who supposedly stepped out hadn’t actually left. She wasn’t going to risk him saying something he shouldn’t.

“I said what you asked. Will you have Mr. Xu withdraw his charges against Mengyao now?” He asked softly.

“Of course, I’m not like you,” she replied, taking Gu Xianting’s phone to contact Xu Nian.

Initially, without evidence, the detention couldn’t exceed 48 hours. Everything was proceeding according to Wen Zhao’s plan.

Neither Gu Ruoxian nor Su Mengyao’s reactions deviated from her expectations.

In faraway Licheng, Su Mengyao was still waiting for Gu Ruoxian to rescue her from the police station.

But finally! Her “Rescue the Male Lead” system came back online!

[Ahhh, host! How did you end up in jail?!]

The system screamed in panic upon detecting her location.

It had used up all its hard-earned energy to get this useless host out of the basement, even marking the location and preparing a key card.

It practically fed her the solution!

The system had expected to see her rescue the male lead, the two of them looking at each other with teary eyes, deciding to fight the evil female lead together, and walking hand in hand towards a happy ending.

It was delusional!

How dare it think so boldly, expecting a perfect HE right after coming back online?!

“You’re finally here,” Su Mengyao said resentfully. “How dare you ask why I’m in jail? It’s all your fault. I followed the address you gave me, used the card you provided, but Xianting wasn’t there. The room was occupied by someone else. I was accused of illegal entry.”

“The card you gave me disappeared after I used it. I can’t explain it.”

“Tell me honestly, am I really the female lead?”

“Does any female lead suffer as much as I do?”

“And do I really have to be the female lead?”

The system felt hopeless. If it had hands, it would cover its ears to block out her complaints and questions.

[Host, I just backtracked and confirmed that when you entered that room, the male lead was less than five meters away from you.]

Su Mengyao’s voice stopped abruptly. After a long pause, she screamed, “How is that possible?! If he was so close, why didn’t he come out? Did he just watch me get taken away by security?”

[Host, my energy was insufficient to view the exact footage, but the energy readings confirm the male lead’s position.]

[So, this isn’t my fault.]

The system realized it had nothing to be ashamed of. Initially, it felt guilty, thinking it had made a mistake.

But after reviewing the past 24 hours’ data, the system regained its confidence!

“I don’t care! It’s your fault!” Su Mengyao refused to acknowledge her own incompetence.

“Get me out of here!” She was desperate to leave the station.

[Host, let me remind you, unlike before, this is a police matter. This cell has surveillance cameras. Are you sure you want to perform a disappearing act?]

She hesitated, realizing that disappearing would raise suspicions, potentially leading to her being taken to a special lab for dissection.

She shivered at the thought, feeling a chill down her spine.

“So what should I do now? How do I get out?” She had hoped Gu Ruoxian would save her, but it seemed she had no intention of helping her!

Realizing her position, she knew that without marrying Gu Xianting, Gu Ruoxian could rightfully ignore her.

[Host, you’ll have to find a way out yourself. Let me remind you, the male lead’s affection for you is fluctuating wildly. If it drops below 80, he won’t love you anymore.]

“You’re so annoying! Shut up!” She snapped, irritated by the system’s constant reminders, especially about Gu Xianting’s waning affection.

She had believed she had he wrapped around her finger, his emotional investment too high for him to easily let her go.

After much internal struggle, She called a policeman and asked to see someone.

Fifteen minutes later.

In a small room, She sat across from a handsome young man with naturally affectionate eyes that seemed to give her his full attention and care.

“Han Feng, I thought you wouldn’t come to see me,” Su Mengyao said tearfully.

“How could I not? You know I’ve always been waiting for you,” Shen Han Feng said, placing his hand gently on hers. When she tried to pull away, he held on firmly.

“I’ve told you before, Gu Xianting isn’t right for you,” he sighed.

“Look at you now, being framed and jailed. Where is he?”

“In the end, it’s me who saves you. Give me five minutes, and I’ll take care of everything.” With that, he squeezed her hand and left.

Shen Han Feng had grown up next door to Su Mengyao. Like all romantic stories, there was a loyal childhood friend who loved the heroine silently, only to be overshadowed by the domineering male lead.

He approached the police and offered a million-dollar check, hoping Xu Nian would withdraw his accusation, allowing Su Mengyao to be released.

However, the police officer looked confused, “Sir, don’t you know?”

Shen Han Feng: “What?”

“Mr. Xu already withdrew his accusation. He said he found his watch and dropped the charges.”

Fine.

In the end, he still managed to rescue Su Mengyao.

She tearfully expressed her gratitude. When he hinted at abandoning Gu Xianting for him, she rejected him.

She loved Gu Xianting, not him. She knew Shen Han Feng cared deeply for her, just as Wen Zhao did for Gu Xianting, but love couldn’t be forced.

Shen Han Feng, the faithful second lead, could only retreat back to his guardian role, heartbroken.

Once home, she immediately contacted Gu Ruoxian.

At that moment, Gu Ruoxian was in a surveillance room at a scenic spot.

After the video call with Gu Xianting, she felt something was off. His behavior was too strange. True love couldn’t shift so quickly; his reaction to Su Mengyao was odd.

So, she scoured Wen Zhao’s social media and found a recent photo at a scenic spot.

Using the photo, she located

the place. These days, entry required real-name registration, and while she couldn’t get full cooperation, she managed to request surveillance footage by claiming she lost something valuable.

With the photo timestamp, she reviewed hours of footage but found nothing.

Neither Wen Zhao nor Gu Xianting appeared in the surveillance where they should have.
