Chapter 353: Perfect Fit
Based on the comments of his profile, the main limiting factor for not receiving greater recruitment efforts was due to his low level of strength—which was insufficient for most subdivisions.
Despite being at the same level as him, the disadvantage of her star level was offset by the presence of Balens who could even curse or make bad luck befall an individual several levels higher than her as long as she had enough spiritual power to grant the wish. And considering that her gift also just so happened to be limitless spiritual power, this was not a concern for her.
Meanwhile, the Pathfinders were the most enthusiastic about him joining since it was the only subdivision that required members with a variety of ranks—after all, many relics had maximum strength requirements for its entrants.
With his strange and varied spiritual creatures, including a Vespid Queen with two dozen guards at her disposal to serve as scouts in dangerous relics, Kain was extremely desirable to them.
In fact, the Pathfinders were the only subdivision that ranked Kain higher in desirability than Serena, who only received a B rating from them.
Moreover, out of all of the subdivision, Kain also was inclined to joining the Pathfinders even prior to receiving the report.
Due to his level, he would likely only traverse relics and ruins that limit the level of the explorers to his own level. Meaning that out of all the divisions, it was one of the least dangerous to him.
Moreover, as someone with academic interests, uncovering the secrets present within ancient relics was extremely appealing to him and he'd also have the right to select a certain number of materials he recovered from the relics for himself.
Finally, in contrast to the extended periods of travel that several of the other subdivisions requires, most relics could be cracked within a week.
Considering that he was still a student, and also the other commitments that he had, being away for a couple of weeks at the maximum, was far better than being away for months, or even years, at a time.
It was clear why the Pathfinders wanted him. And, likewise, Kain couldn't deny that they were truly a perfect fit for one another.
"Well," he murmured, shoving the folded booklet into his pocket with a faint smile. "At least someone sees my worth."
Serena glanced at him from the corner of her eye, clearly noting the shift in his previously gloomy demeanor. "So, are you going to accept their offer?"
"I'm considering it," Kain replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "It makes the most sense. Their tasks align with my strengths, and I wouldn't have to be gone for too long."
"Hmm," Serena said, flipping her own booklet closed. "It's a good fit for you. Thankfully, even if you do regret your decision, you can always switch subdivisions later on."
Kain arched an eyebrow at her. "And what about you? Where are you going?"
"I haven't decided yet." Serena's tone was calm, but her eyes betrayed her contemplation. "Though the Pathfinders definitely seem the most suitable for our current identities as students. But, the Hunt may also suit me…"
Kain lips twitched. "The Hunt, huh? Figures you'd aim high."
Before Serena could reply, the heavy sound of a door unlocking drew everyone's attention. The massive door to the room creaked open, its weight causing the ground to tremble slightly. A beam of natural light spilled in from the other side, starkly contrasting the sterile glow of the room they were in.
Kain exchanged a glance with Serena before stepping forward, joining the line of participants as they filed out of the building. What awaited them beyond the door was nothing short of breathtaking.
The clearing they entered was wide and shone faintly under an otherworldly ethereal glow cast by the moon above as well as some of the faintly glowing plants present.
The ground beneath their feet sparkled faintly as though it were dusted with crushed gemstones and at the center of the clearing stood a magnificent statue of a flying spiritual creature Kain had never seen before.
Its wings in the statute were spread wide, and appeared almost alive due to the intricate carvings of its feathers and features. The creature's eyes, which possessed two glowing gems, seemed to an aura of mystery and power.
Surrounding the clearing were towering buildings of various architectural styles, each with a sign indicating the subdivision it belonged to.
The sleek, minimalistic design of the Lunar Veil building stood in stark contrast to the fortress-like structure of the Vanguard.
Nearby, the Pathfinders headquarters boasted a blend of old and new, with ancient stonework and antique exterior features, such as what appeared to be extremely old sconces, integrated seamlessly with modern materials, hinting at the subdivisions identity of uncovering and combining the old relics of the past to be combined with modern knowledge and technology.
Aside from the building for each subdivision there were other structures, clearly marked as training facilities or contribution point exchange centers.
Participants loitered around the currently sparsely populated clearing, most unsure of where to head next since they were undecided about who to join or which subdivisions' assessments they wished to complete.
Eventually, some headed toward the buildings bearing their chosen subdivision's sign, while a few undecided individuals chose to spend some of their time wandering to explore the various facilities.
Kain's eyes lingered on the various buildings, his gaze eventually settling on the Pathfinders' headquarters—a blend of antique and modern.
Kain didn't see any point in dragging out a decision when they were currently perfectly suited for one another, and he could switch subdivisions later on anyways. Therefore, after saying his goodbyes, he started toward the Pathfinders' building.
The closer he got, the more details he could make out. The sconces embedded in the walls weren't just decorative; they emitted a soft, steady light that seemed clear the mind and speed up the restoration of spiritual power. Intricate carvings adorned the doorway, depicting constellations and ancient symbols Kain didn't recognize.
After briefly hesitating in the massive doorway, he finally stepped through to begin a new journey.
