Chapter 13: Low Voltage

"Well let's get started!" Our physicist grinned at cross "We need to make you a set of tools first.

Cross's eyes glowed at the mention of tools and prospect of progression. Our physicist chuckled at that and got to work, sawing, cutting and molding a set of tools identical to his own alongside a satchel to put them in.

A minute of concentrated silence passed, only interrupted by the occasional sounds of saws and hammers before...

"Aaand there you go my friend! A full set of tools." He smiled, passing it to Cross who accepted it as though it was the most precious thing in the world. "If they ever break, grab some iron and sticks from this chest and make some of your own! It'll be good practice too."

Cross nodded enthusiastically, his eyes practically beaming rays of light.

"Now that that's done let's actually get started on tonight's project. Circuits!" The two of them moved together to grab some crates from their cart-materials they had prospected on their way home. These included ores like redstone and miscellaneous material like rubber tree sap.

"This should last us years..." murmured Cross.

"Oh you don't know the start of it Cross, this won't even last us a month!" replied our physicist.

Cross raised his eyebrow in disbelief.

"Well regardless, let me show you how we'll be spending the rest of the night..." He started by throwing redstone ore into the processing line, grinding it twice into dust, alloying some with copper to form red alloy, and using some more for magnetic iron rods.

He then used steel molds to make hollow glass casings and alloyed sulfur with rubber tree sap to make slabs of rubber.

Cross observed and noted down every small movement of our physicist into a notebook, making sure not to miss anything.

Our physicist continued to combine all the materials slowly, methodically, and carefully. 10 minutes passed and our physicist put the last rubber coated red alloy wire in place.

He made a minor adjustment to the steel plating "annndd that's that!" he exclaimed, pushing the newly made circuit toward Cross.

Cross examined the small circuit disbelievingly. "This...thing will help us reach further?"

Our physicist grinned "That 'thing' is going to be the keystone of our technological ascent. Now let's get to work!"

[The Ringed Child]

Emotion flashed through the eyes of the ringed child once more. Pity arose, combatted by an insatiable rage that seemed to ravage his mind.

"P-please" The dry voice of a female villager wheezed before the child. "Please no" she sobbed "no more.."

The corpses of 10 thousand or more villagers littered the grounds around the two individuals, a formerly grandiose city was aflame behind them.

The bones and flesh of her own kin rose around her to bind her body, sinking teeth and malformed bone into her flesh.

she shrieked once more, the nauseating sound echoing through the empty village. The shrieks soon turned to soundless whistles as the villager's vocal chords failed her.

The ringed child's dull eyes seemed to regain some light as he heard this despondent sound.

He looked around him as though he was seeing the horrors he caused for the first time and fell to his knees, clutching at his head. purple runes raged across his skin. Horror and an unidentified rage battled in his mind, ravaging it.

"Ple-se" whispered the cracked voice of the villager amidst her screams.

In that instant, rage seemed to bubble out of the child's eyes, easily claiming victory over his horror and pity.

"ZECRAM ERVETTT"

The flesh and bones of her kin started to contract around the villager, squeezing her so tight that her body collapsed into a bag of loose bones. Popping and crunching noises sounded out from the body of that poor villager as it popped into a pool of blood that splattered across the ground and onto the body of the ringed child.

At this moment, three beings seemingly made out of pure darkness rose out of the ground, bending knee toward the ringed child. They each held the head of a villager armored in a strange helmet which glowed with a mystical light.

"M-m-m-m-y Lo-o-o-rd." Three eerie voices that seemed to sound from the depths of the abyss echoed out in unison. "I-t-t-t is do--O-ne."

[Our dear physicist]

Cross and our physicist spent the night and some of the morning slowly and carefully constructing basic circuits, having ended up making 89 whole basic circuits. 50 of which were made by our physicist.

He grinned mockingly "Told you I'd win."

Cross harrumphed, clearly unhappy that his decades of metallurgy had failed him, slumping in a corner of the house in fatigue.

"Well regardless, we can now move onto the next step. Making actual, electric powered machines."

Cross sat up straight once more, seeming to have forgotten his fatigue. "Let's begin!" he roared gruffly.

Our physicist covered his ears jokingly and began to make the machine hull. "This here is the hull. It is the base of low tier machines..." he explained as he carefully twisted and hammered the steel and wrought iron into shape.

He continued to make new parts and slowly assemble the machine for nearly an hour until...

"There we go..." he murmured, placing a rotor into the hull. "And that's done! This machine here will convert steam into power!" He explained as he slowly and carefully picked up the block and set it up next to his solid fuel boilers, murmuring about making a large liquid fuel boiler multiblock as he pushed it into place and piped steam from the boilers into the steam turbine.

With a whirr and a soft rumble, the turbine came to life, inciting a whoop from Cross and a grin from our physicist.

"Today we step out of the steam age, and into the age of low electricity!"
