Chapter 21: Compassion Where Hate Lies
Y/n's POV
I can only imagine what Mikey thinks. I'm sure he knows by now that I'm here and that he hates me even more.
A grunt pulled me out of my thoughts. I had to make sure I paid close attention to what's going on around me.
I was allowed to leave that day, only to be "Escorted" to some back room by Kazutora who seemed somewhat calmer the next day. Baji followed along, not saying much and avoiding speaking to me.
That's understandable, I guess. I'm sure he has not idea what to think of me choosing to stay here with Valhalla.
Kazutora never stopped smiling or talking about his plans, but I tried desperately to avoid talking about Mikey which, unfortunately, he noticed.
"Do you hate Mikey too? Is he your enemy too?" The sudden question made my eyes open wide.
"I don't hate anyone, Tora." Was my reply.
This seemed to make him pause and I tried to keep any fear deep down instead of on my face.
"He threw you away and you don't hate him?" At this point, Kazutora as well as Baji are looking at me, waiting for my answer.
I'm not a good liar, but would I want to lie?
"He didn't throw me away. His heart has been hurt before, just like yours." I responded calmly.
"I'm nothing like Mikey. He's my enemy and I'm going to kill him." He spat out. With that, he walked out of the room and I felt my shoulders slump in defeat.
Why did I bother staying when there's no reason for him or Baji to even listen to me?
Baji still hadn't said anything to me and I didn't bother asking him about it. The silence made my head hurt. A sudden sound of approaching footsteps yanked me out of my heard. I hoped it was Kazutora, but it was one of the other Valhalla guys.
He was the one who grabbed me when I first got here.
"Hey, I wanted to bring you some water as an apology." He said as he held out a bottled water.
I had been here for I don't even know how long and I was really thirsty. The overwhelming feeling of cottonmouth overcame my sense to be cautious and I reached out and thanked him.
Baji's POV
I should've stopped her when I saw that loser smirk and walk back after he made sure she took a swig. She was out cold right before I was going to meet Chifuyu.
Baji cursed to himself thinking how this chick had obviously not done a thing to betray Toman and yet here she was. It made no sense. He could tell she hated that Hanma guy, but she was kind to Baji and Kazutora.
Seeing her shoulders fall when Kazutora left made him positive she was there thinking she could help them in some way.
Baji carried her bridal style to the meeting point before stopping and leaning against the rail. He looked down at her and took in her features and immediately noticed a slightly faded bruise on the side of her head. Way too big to have gotten from some sort of fall.
Baji leaned his head back in frustration.
This sucks.
Chifuyu's POV
Takemitchy had said the girl who was a friend of Emma had been there with him and cried over my condition. The way he explained it to me made me ache and the fact she stayed behind made him ache more out of pure worry, even though he knew Baji would keep her safe.
As they walked to meet Baji and came within sight of him, Chifuyu felt his heart freeze in panic. There she was in Baji's arms. Unconscious.
The time they were talking, Baji didn't put her down and she didn't wake up. By the end of it, Baji looked at her carefully before stepping forward and holding her out to Chifuyu.
Chifuyu felt his face grow red, but had to ask. "What happened to her? She's been asleep this whole time!" With that question out there, he looked at her again and even during the whole time they'd been talking, she hadn't once done more than breathe.
Baji shrugged. "Not my problem." He turned to walk away, but then hesitated. "Make sure you check her for any more bruises and keep a close eye on her. Kazutora seems to have grown attached to this chick." Baji walked off leaving Chifuyu and Takemitchy confused.
Bruises?
Takemitchy was able to ask Draken where Y/n lived so he could bring her home. Takemitchy seemed to be deep in thought as they sat on her front porch, waiting for her to wake up. He suddenly apologized to Chifuyu saying he needed to check something, leaving Chifuyu alone with this girl.
He kept running over what Baji had said about bruises. He did notice the bruise on her head. No girl can take that kind of hit without knocking them out cold or even killing them. When did that even happen thought? It doesn't look fresh but it also doesn't look like it would heal quickly.
It beginning to get dark and he still kept her close for Baji. He started talking to her in hopes it would wake her. He talked about how he and Baji met, about how much he loves cats and shojo manga. After a while he started comparing the situation to a shojo manga without thinking.
"How many stories have I read about a guy who helps a pretty girl and she's asleep in his arms? Way too many." He spoke with a soft chuckle. The movement seemed to cause her to stir and his heart beat faster thinking she was waking up. He kept talking about whatever he could think of.
"That day I first talked to you, your smile was so bright. Cheesy or not, bright as the sun!" He said while looking at her face. He let out a soft sight. " I saw you after we were told you betrayed us. Not on purpose."
He looked up at the sky and continued. "I knew when I saw you crying on that guy, that something was wrong. I'd never seen anyone cry like that."
Chifuyu felt tears prick at his eyes. "I heard what he said, but I stayed away." He sniffled. "I am so sorry." With that, he looked back at the sleeping girl only to be met with a pair of beautiful and very much open eyes staring back at him.
He wanted to mutter apologies for clearly invading her space. Before he could, she reached out and wiped away some of the stray tears on his face. The moment seemed to freeze when she smiled at him.
"Thank you, Chifuyu."
He checked on her and made sure she could stand on her own and go into her house safely before leaving. It was late, but he knew he'd have one more thing on his mind.
He managed to smile a little on his way home. This would definitely be a forever memory.
