Chapter 47 - Xiong Ju Pass
Xiong Ju Pass, the name itself suggests a connection with Bear Head Fort.
Gu Yao stepped out of the carriage. He had heard about the situation at Xiong Ju Pass from Tian Feirong, but it certainly wasn’t as vivid as seeing it with his own eyes.
“Gu Yao, you finally came out,” Tian Feirong immediately ran over. “You’re either reading or cultivating all day long. I haven’t seen anyone else as diligent as you on this journey.”
Tian Feirong admired Gu Yao greatly. No wonder he could reach the fifth level of Qi Refining at such a young age despite having four spiritual roots. This was all thanks to Gu Yao’s diligence. It wasn’t just the effect of medicinal pills; the Gu family wasn’t short of pills either.
Wait, the young lady from the Lu family rarely showed herself either. But from Tian Feirong’s perspective, it was probably because of the falling-out with Gu Yan, hiding in the carriage and refusing to meet anyone.
“Mm, I came out to take a look. Just in case something happens, it’s better to be prepared.” As soon as he stepped out, all kinds of probing gazes and spiritual senses landed on him. Gu Yao shrugged it off, choosing to ignore it.
Gu Yao looked around. They were traveling along a mountain trail, surrounded by towering, rugged peaks. Gu Yao could sense the presence of many dangerous beasts hidden in the mountains. If it weren’t for the foundation-building cultivators keeping them in check, these beasts might have already pounced, eager to attack. After all, the flesh of cultivators is a great tonic for demonic beasts.
Chi Changye remained calm. The dangerous atmosphere around them had no effect on him at all.
Suddenly, he raised his head and looked towards the right front. “Something is flying over there.”
“Where? What is it?” Tian Feirong jumped in shock.
Before Chi Changye could respond, the front of the group sounded the alarm: “Be on alert, archers prepare! A group of flying birds is approaching us. The guards on both sides, strengthen your defenses! Don’t let any other demonic beasts take advantage of the chaos and launch a sneak attack!”
As soon as the words were spoken, a flock of birds indeed appeared from the right front, flying in a dense mass. In the blink of an eye, they blotted out the sky, and the light dimmed considerably. The prepared archers released their arrows as soon as the birds came within range.
With a command of “Fire!” the arrows shot into the sky like a rain of arrows.
At the same time, the lurking demonic beasts on both sides of the group began to stir. With a roar, a massive python emerged from the forest, its huge head poking out. The snake’s tail whipped through the trees, snapping them in half, and the broken trees, along with some boulders, tumbled down.
The marching group came to a halt, and many of the cultivators joined the battle. Chi Changye stood in front of the carriage, keeping watch over the surroundings and the situation in the air.
Gu Yao looked up at the sky. Some of the lower-level birds were shot down, feathers and blood falling from the sky. However, some of the birds flapped their wings, causing the arrows to change direction midair and fall to the ground.
One of the purple crystal eagles ignored the arrow storm and dove toward the cultivators below. It was about to strike with its iron claws at a cultivator’s head. Below, the Lu family’s team was present. A Lu family elder threw his sword into the air and shouted:
“Vile beast, stop your rampage! Retreat immediately!”
“This purple crystal eagle flies incredibly fast. If it could be tamed, it would make an excellent flying mount,” said a cultivator. “Second Elder, I’ll assist you!” He stepped on his flying sword and soared into the air, using a hammer-like magical tool to engage the purple crystal eagle in combat.
Tian Ru, seated calmly on the back of a horn-scaled horse, did not move. These demonic beasts were not worthy of a foundation-building cultivator like her to intervene. However, after glancing at Tian Feiyang, who was eager to join, she said, “You should go down and practice. Auntie will watch from the side.”
“Thank you, Aunt. I’m going now.” Tian Feiyang leaped off his horse and immediately joined the battle between the cultivators and the demonic beasts.
Gu Yan and Lu Minbai, two young cultivators who were famous in the town alongside Tian Feiyang, were unwilling to be left behind. They stepped forward, displaying their abilities, which caused the family members who had been hiding behind the guards to cheer and applaud, supporting them from the sidelines.
“My brother, hey, my brother is so brave, isn’t he? Go, big brother!” Tian Feirong shouted excitedly, waving his fist as he saw his brother join the battle.
In the sky, the purple crystal eagle was no match for the combined efforts of the two Lu family elders. It screeched once, flapping its wings as it flew away. Although it had been injured and some of its purple feathers fell, the purple crystal eagle was skilled in speed. Despite being wounded, it managed to escape, and the Lu family cultivators were unable to intercept it, so they could only watch helplessly as it flew farther away.
Suddenly, a shrill cry sounded from the side—it was the giant python that had earlier charged out, spraying a toxic mist. The cultivator who was hit by the mist quickly turned pale and screamed in agony. A fellow cultivator quickly took out a detox pill and gave it to him, managing to stabilize the injury and help him down. After Gu Yan jumped out, he managed to subdue the giant python and prevent it from further harming the Lu family’s guards.
“Not good, a horned rhinoceros is charging in! Everyone, be careful! Quickly, those in the front, move aside!” Someone shouted. Gu Yao turned his head to look and saw a massive rhinoceros, its dark skin and horn faintly glowing with black light, breaking through the blockade and charging in. The cultivators in the front, fearing the rhinoceros’ power, quickly scattered to the sides. Unfortunately, the carriage where Gu Yao and Chi Changye were sitting was exposed. The rhinoceros seemed to detect an alluring scent from there and immediately charged toward them. The ground shook with each step, and the horn-scaled horse, being pulled along, neighed as it tried to escape.
“Gu Yao, run!” A cultivator who saw the situation clearly shouted loudly.
“Not good! Gu Yao, Chi Brother, run!” It was Tian Feirong. He quickly turned around, shouting for help. Given his own strength, charging in would only make things worse.
“Xiao Yao, protect the carriage.” Chi Changye gave Gu Yao a look, signaling him to stay calm. He then drew the sword he had been holding close to his chest and strode toward the horned rhinoceros.
While calming the horn-scaled horse, Gu Yao looked at Chi Changye. Just that one glance, for some inexplicable reason, made him believe that, no matter what danger lay ahead, this person would always stand in front of him and block it. So, he didn’t feel the slightest sense of impending danger.
“That person is crazy, why isn’t he running? Instead, he’s walking straight toward it. That’s courting death.”
“Maybe he’s a powerful cultivator and can kill that beast with one strike… uh…”
All the words were stuck in their throats because, just as the person had said “kill it with one sword,” Chi Changye truly struck the horned rhinoceros with a sword. It seemed like a light slash, but it unleashed a burst of sword energy that shot up into the sky. Those nearby were instantly surrounded by the sword aura, unable to breathe, as if the air had been sucked out.
“Boom!”
The horned rhinoceros, cleaved in half, collapsed with a deafening roar, sending dust flying into the air. After it fell, the blood from the rhinoceros’ body erupted out like a dam being breached. The cultivators who witnessed this scene fell into stunned silence, their eyes wide with disbelief as they looked at Chi Changye, who was still standing in front of the horned rhinoceros. The man seemed to have descended from the heavens, his form suddenly growing imposing and divine.
Chi Changye had killed the horned rhinoceros with a single sword strike, then slowly sheathed his sword. His sharp gaze swept across the surroundings, and then, ignoring the astonishment of everyone, he moved forward to collect the valuable parts of the rhinoceros.
A god had just been brought down to earth.
Especially when the hem of his robe accidentally splattered with blood, the people around, who had just been stunned by the scene, began to snap back to reality. Their gazes turned strange as they looked at him. Where did this monster come from? His power was so terrifying.
The Tian family’s guards and Tian Feirong were the first to rush over. Tian Feirong exaggeratedly patted his chest: “You scared me to death! Brother Chi, you’re amazing! I thought you…” He quickly swallowed the rest of his words, afraid that if he said it out loud, Chi Changye might get angry and turn that sword on him.
“Young Master Chi is truly powerful. We were negligent to let such a horned rhinoceros through,” one of the guards said apologetically, his attitude now much more respectful than before.
Chi Changye shook his head. “It has nothing to do with you. Gu Yao and I are under the protection of the Tian family, so it is only right for us to contribute our efforts.”
Hearing this, the Tian family’s guards felt relieved. The most frightening thing was a strong person with a strange temper, someone who could turn hostile in an instant. But from the way Chi Changye spoke, it seemed he wasn’t that difficult to approach.
Chi Changye walked back to Gu Yao’s side, smiling. “I’ve heard that the meat near the heart of the horned rhinoceros is the most tender. I’ll bring it back and try roasting it when we take a break.” Such meat was rare in Yuanyang Town, and even if it was available, it would never be presented to them.
“Sounds good,” Gu Yao replied happily, unaffected by the earlier events.
Tian Feirong and the Tian family’s guards exchanged strange glances at the two of them.
Tian Ru finally withdrew her divine sense, which had been focused on them, and a look of regret appeared in her eyes. This battle had once again raised her opinion of Chi Changye. But the more talented someone was, the harder it was to recruit them into Tianhai Sect. She hoped that such a genius would not be wasted. Turning around, she gave orders to further elevate the treatment of Gu Yao and Chi Changye.
The battle lasted for more than two hours before gradually coming to an end. The giant python was killed after Gu Yan and his group paid some cost. The Gu family erupted in cheers; killing the giant python alone was a great achievement. Especially since Gu Yan had demonstrated considerable combat power during the fight. Compared to Lu Minbai, who had withdrawn from the battle due to injuries, Gu Yan’s performance was clearly far superior. The Gu family’s morale was high.
However, when compared to Chi Changye’s earth-shattering sword strike, it seemed somewhat lacking.
Several cultivators had been lost, and there were even more injured, but the group did not stop to rest. Instead, they continued moving forward; otherwise, the scent of blood would attract more beasts.
Once they reached the resting area, the Gu family’s camp became the most popular spot. Many cultivators went there to buy healing and detoxifying pills. Of course, the Tian family didn’t take part. Gu Yao had already traded pills with them, and the Tian family had intercepted a good number. So, now the injured sat around, swallowing pills to heal their wounds.
The group was not just made up of the three families; there were others who had joined through various channels. It was natural for someone to get injured in the battle. Gu Yao rested his chin in his hand, surveying the situation. Suddenly, he said, “Brother Ye, what do you think about me selling pills here?”
Seeing how people were quietly begging the Gu family for pills and how proud the Gu family looked, Gu Yao couldn’t stand it. He also didn’t want to miss such a good opportunity to make money.
Chi Changye smiled and said, “Xiao Yao, if you want to do it, then go ahead. I’ll protect you.”
Gu Yao immediately got excited, rolling up his sleeves as if ready for action. His eyes flickered, and he called Tian Feirong over. The two of them chattered for a while, then hung up a piece of cloth with a flag that read “Selling Pills” in large characters, which fluttered above their carriage.
Tian Feirong, standing under the flag, fanned himself while shouting, “Selling pills! Rejuvenation Pills, Detox Pills, Qi-Nourishing Pills, Yuan Gathering Pills! Don’t miss out, come one, come all! The quality of these pills will not disappoint, so be ready with your spirit beads and spirit stones, no silver tickets accepted!”
Not all the Tian family members were aware of the trade between the Tian family and Gu Yao. Seeing their second young master acting this way, they froze for a moment and all looked toward Tian Ru, the leader of their group. “What is the second young master doing? Where did he get these pills? Could they be from the family?”
There’s no way the family’s pills would be allowed to be sold, and the second young master is truly acting recklessly!
Tian Ru, of course, knew that Gu Yao was selling pills. Since leaving Yuanyang Town, there were no more concerns. What could the Gu family do if they found out Gu Yao’s pill-making skills were excellent? The Gu family’s foundation elders and the family patriarch were not part of the group, so Gu Yao had become quite bold.
Tian Ru didn’t mind this approach. She could protect the two of them along the way, but once they reached the Immortal Ascension Conference, their lives would be in their own hands. She then said, “The Tian family’s pills were exchanged from Gu Yao. He’s a pill master and has excellent pill-making skills.”
These words caused a collective gasp, especially from the younger members of the Tian family. They couldn’t believe their ears. They had never taken Gu Yao seriously, but now they realized the pills they had been using were made by him?
Anyone who had used the pills would know that their quality far surpassed those from the Gu family. They still hadn’t forgotten the recent scandal over the Detox Pills.
“Can we also buy some?” one of the Tian family members asked. After all, who would ever have too many pills?
“Of course,” Gu Yao replied.
Tian Ru’s words made many members of the Tian family eager to act, including the Tian family’s guards. With the second young master around, they expected him to offer them a fair price, unlike the Gu family who always demanded money but often made it difficult to even buy anything, even after paying.
So, while other cultivators were watching, unsure of what had gotten into Second Young Master Tian, some members of the Tian family had already approached him to negotiate.
“Second Young Master, how much for the Rejuvenation Pills and Detox Pills?”
“Rejuvenation Pills are 100 spirit beads each, and Detox Pills are 150 spirit beads each.” Tian Feirong’s eyes sparkled as he looked at his relatives. “How many would you like?”
If it weren’t for Tian Ru’s guarantee, these relatives would never have dared to buy the pills, seeing how the second young master was behaving. If they were scammed, they wouldn’t be able to seek justice. The first person to ask thought for a moment before saying, “Two Detox Pills and four Rejuvenation Pills.”
“Great, bring the spirit beads here. Gu Yao, give the pills!” Tian Feirong stretched his hand forward and called out behind him.
Gu Yao took out two porcelain bottles and handed them over. The person first took out the spirit beads and then accepted the pills. Unable to wait, he opened the porcelain bottle, and the fragrance of the pills instantly refreshed his mind. Overjoyed, he realized that they were all top-quality pills. The quality of these pills was so high that even if he paid several times the price, he wouldn’t be able to buy them from the Gu family. He hurriedly sealed the bottle and cupped his hands in thanks, saying, “Thank you, Second Young Master. Thank you, Pill Master Gu Yao.”
The other Tian family members who followed were no fools. They quickly started buying pills. Although the family also distributed pills, the quantity they received wouldn’t be much.
Moreover, with healing pills like the Rejuvenation Pills, no cultivator would ever have too many. Some even took the opportunity to buy a Yuan Gathering Pill to bring back for their children, so they wouldn’t have to figure out how to exchange for pills from the Gu family later.
The members of the Tian family who had bought the pills left in high spirits. Those who had previously used the pills distributed by the family could tell that these pills came from the same person. Without needing Second Young Master Tian to say anything, they spontaneously began spreading the word about the quality of Gu Yao’s pills.
It turned out that not only was Chi Changye’s combat ability incredibly impressive, but Gu Yao, who was with him, was equally outstanding. Otherwise, Chi Changye wouldn’t have stayed by Gu Yao’s side.
Other cultivators, seeing this, couldn’t help but feel moved. Instead of waiting in line at the Gu family to ask for pills, why not take a look here? Maybe the pills really were that good. The Tian family wasn’t all naïve, and with Tian Ru overseeing things, did they really think Gu Yao would dare to pass off fake pills to the Tian family? If he tried that, Tian Ru would have killed him with a single slap long ago.
