Tri Realm: Reborn in Iron

Chapter 13: A Test of Shadows

The morning after his record-breaking no-scope shot, Akio sat in the training room, savoring a rare moment of stillness. His body ached from the relentless months of pushing his limits, but his mind remained sharp, eager for the next challenge.

Ivanov entered the room, his boots echoing against the stone floor. His expression was unreadable, as usual, but there was a subtle intensity in his gaze that made Akio straighten instinctively.

"Impressive work yesterday," Ivanov said, his voice firm yet calm. "But precision at a distance is only one aspect of being a weapon. Today, we test your skills up close. No rifles. No long-range calculations. Just you... and your instincts."

Akio raised an eyebrow, intrigued but cautious. "What's the challenge?"

Ivanov gestured toward the door, his tone revealing a hint of anticipation. "Follow me."

**The Cold Mountain Forest**

Akio followed Ivanov through the compound, out into the harsh cold of the mountain range surrounding their base. A biting wind whipped through the air, and snow crunched beneath their boots as they approached a steep ridge. Below them, the dark expanse of the forest stretched out, towering trees twisting in unnatural shapes against the winter sky.

"Your challenge begins here," Ivanov said, his voice barely audible over the howling wind. "You'll be released into this forest. You'll have one knife. The assassins are already in there, waiting for you. They've been given their weapons of choice. They've been promised their freedom if they kill you. The odds are not in your favor, Akio. But I'm confident you'll find a way to survive."

Akio's heart raced as Ivanov's words sank in. These weren't just nameless killers. These were seasoned professionals, trained to kill without hesitation. And now, they were after him.

"You know the drill," Ivanov continued. "If you hesitate, you die."

The wind howled louder, as if to emphasize his words, and Akio was pushed into the snow-covered forest, his breath forming clouds in the frigid air. Behind him, the gate slammed shut, and the sound of the wind was the only thing that filled his ears.

---

**The Silent Hunt**

The cold mountain forest was eerily silent, the only sound the crunch of Akio's boots as he moved cautiously through the dense underbrush. His hands were already numb from the biting wind, but his mind was razor-sharp. He had no choice but to stay on his toes. If he wanted to survive, he couldn't let his guard down for even a second.

The assassins were professionals, each a master of their craft. Akio's knife was a meager defense against their skill, and if he let his instincts slip, he would die.

He slowed his pace, listening for any sign of movement. The trees loomed over him, their dark silhouettes casting long shadows in the snow. Suddenly, a branch snapped behind him.

Akio whirled around, his knife raised. But there was nothing—just a bird taking off into the sky. A trick. A game. He was being hunted.

---

**The First Attack**

Moments later, he heard it again—a rustle in the trees. But this time, he was ready. He ducked behind a large boulder as the figure emerged from the shadows. It was one of the assassins, a tall man with a wide grin, holding a curved sword in his gloved hands.

"I've been waiting for you," the assassin called out, his voice deep and mocking. He took a step forward, his blade gleaming in the pale light.

Akio's grip tightened on his knife, his breathing steady. This was it. A test of his reflexes, his mind, and his survival instincts. The assassin didn't hesitate. With a quick strike, he lunged toward Akio, aiming for his torso.

Akio ducked, spinning to the side, the cold air rushing past his ear as the blade missed by inches. He retaliated with a quick jab, aiming for the man's exposed ribs, but the assassin was too fast, parrying the blow with a swift motion of his sword.

Akio's heart pounded in his chest as the two circled each other. Every movement was calculated. Every breath, deliberate. He couldn't afford to be caught in a drawn-out fight. He needed to end this quickly.

The assassin lunged again, but Akio sidestepped, reaching out and slashing at his opponent's wrist. The man staggered back, his sword falling to the snow with a dull thud.

Akio didn't waste any time. He advanced, taking advantage of the opening and pressing his advantage, thrusting the knife into the assassin's side. The man gasped, falling to his knees as his blood stained the snow.

---

**The Real Danger**

Akio wiped the blood off his knife and quickly moved deeper into the forest, knowing that his first victory wouldn't be enough. The others were still out there. They were likely watching, waiting for their chance to strike. If he stayed in one place for too long, they would find him.

Minutes turned into hours as Akio moved stealthily through the snow, doing everything he could to blend into his surroundings. The cold burned his skin, but he couldn't let it distract him. He needed to outwit the assassins, to use their skills against them.

He knew they were professionals. They wouldn't hesitate. They would be smart. He had to be smarter.

---

**The Final Confrontation**

The forest grew darker, the snowstorm intensifying. Akio's breath was ragged now, his limbs heavy from exhaustion, but his eyes never stopped scanning. He couldn't afford to get careless.

Then, he heard it—a whisper of movement. Akio turned just in time to see the woman, her dark cloak blending seamlessly with the shadows, darting toward him with a dagger drawn.

She was fast—too fast. But Akio anticipated her strike, rolling backward to avoid the blow. As he hit the ground, he grabbed a jagged rock, throwing it toward her face. She flinched, momentarily distracted.

Akio took his chance, rushing forward with lightning speed. His knife found its mark in her side, and she staggered back, blood trickling from the wound. But she wasn't finished.

With a roar, she lunged again, but Akio sidestepped, using his momentum to throw her off balance. She fell to the ground, and before she could recover, Akio was on her, his knife slashing through the air, ending the fight once and for all.

---

**The Verdict**

As Akio stood over the fallen assassins, his body shaking from the cold and the adrenaline, he wiped his blade clean. He had done it. But only just.

Ivanov emerged from the trees, his eyes scanning the area before settling on Akio.

"Impressive," Ivanov said, his voice low and approving. "You've survived. But remember this—these assassins were trained professionals. They were dangerous because they thought like predators. If you hadn't outsmarted them, you would be dead."

Akio nodded, his mind already shifting to the next challenge.

"I'll do better next time."

Ivanov smiled faintly. "I know you will."
