Volume 3 Chapter 17 / Chapter 183: Yun Xi, Misfortune Always Come Together
The wind howled through the snowy forest, the sun barely visible behind the snow clouds.
Yun Xi adjusted her straw hat, gazing in the direction of the Shadowmoon Sword Sect.
If the weather were clearer, she could have seen the sect’s iconic thousand-foot stone sword statue. But now, her view was limited to just two miles ahead, obscured by the snowy mist.
She had left the inn at dawn, accompanied by Zhang Yihe, intending to travel as much as possible while the snow was still light. However, shortly after leaving Wang Chuan Town, the snowstorm intensified.
The weather affected her mood, and Yun Xi felt increasingly frustrated. Reflecting on the past six months, she was so angry that she felt like cursing the heavens.
Six months ago, she left the Shadowmoon Sword Sect for the Western Region to negotiate with Li Feng. Soon after arriving at Chi Dragon Mansion, Li Feng died, and she barely escaped with her life, losing eleven of the twelve people she brought with her.
She also encountered two individuals who seemed to be her father’s illegitimate children. She only knew that the “illegitimate son” had purple eyes and was tall; she knew nothing else about them.
On her return journey, she faced chaos, bandits, and relentless bad weather—first torrential rain, then heavy snow. Now, almost back at the sect, she encountered a fierce windstorm.
These were just the events that had already occurred. Once she returned to the sect, she would still face criticism from the elders for “poor performance.”
Yun Xi felt like giving up. Why should she continue to be the sect’s young mistress? But if she made that choice, her two detested sisters would be overjoyed.
Living miserably and watching her most hated people laugh was unbearable.
‘Ugh! It’s just a hurdle. I’ll get through it!’
Just as Yun Xi was encouraging herself, Zhang Yihe, who was flying on his sword behind her, interrupted her thoughts.
“Young Mistress, the snow is getting heavier. I see a good spot below where we can set up two tents and start a fire. We should wait until the snow lightens before continuing. It’s safer.”
“Take shelter…”
Yun Xi pouted and glared at him before looking down. In the snowy forest, there was a circular clearing next to a frozen river. This spot seemed to be a common rest area for passing cultivators, gradually becoming a known stopover point.
However, due to yesterday’s experiences, Yun Xi found the place increasingly suitable for an ambush.
“This place seems perfect for an ambush…”
Zhang Yihe dismissed her concern, waving his hand.
“Young Mistress, how many bandits can there be? Our luck can’t be so bad that we’d be robbed twice in two days, right?”
“…”
Yun Xi rolled her eyes but, seeing the increasing snowfall, decided that resting in the forest might be dangerous. At least the clearing wouldn’t allow for a sneak attack.
After some hesitation, she flew down to the clearing, preparing to place some talismans around for protection.
However, as she landed and stepped on the snow, she stumbled over something round and fell face-first into the snow.
“Ouch!”
“Ah—” Zhang Yihe quickly dismounted from his sword and helped her up. “Young Mistress, are you alright?”
“Ugh…” Yun Xi spat out some snow and glared at the stone that tripped her, kicking it away.
To her shock, it wasn’t a stone but a charred human head.
She looked at the bloody imprint on her boot, flexed her toes, and was silent for a long time.
“Can my luck get any worse? Zhang Yihe!!!”
“Uh…” Zhang Yihe, startled by her shout, quickly examined the head and reported, “Young Mistress, it looks like a rogue cultivator who tried to rob someone but got killed instead.”
Yun Xi’s eye twitched. “Who said there aren’t many bandits?”
“Well… it’s good news. Since the bandit is dead, we won’t be robbed, right?”
“…”
Yun Xi sighed, handed him the talismans, and instructed, “Put these beast-repelling talismans around. I’ll set up the tents.”
Zhang Yihe looked at the precious talismans, hesitated, and said, “Young Mistress, these talismans can repel Peak fourth-level beasts. We’re not staying long—”
Moo~~~!!
A loud bellow came from the forest, followed by a powerful wind that turned their eyelids and gums outward.
Yun Xi immediately realized this was no ordinary ox. The wind carried spiritual energy.
If not for her middle-Foundation Establishment stage cultivation, she would have fainted.
A third-level beast? No, it was a fourth-level beast.
Fourth-level beasts, though not very intelligent, had combat power comparable to mid-to-late Foundation Establishment cultivators.
Crash! Crash! Crash!
Tall pine trees in the east fell one by one.
Yun Xi could feel the ground shaking as the beast charged toward them.
“Zhang Yihe!! Can you be more unlucky?!”
“I—” Zhang Yihe, unable to argue, hastily took out his flying sword and mounted it. “Young Mistress, take to the sky!”
But it was too late. The snow ox was already in the clearing.
It lowered its head, its horns aimed directly at Yun Xi.
Seeing Yun Xi still retrieving her flying sword, Zhang Yihe ran to push her out of the ox’s path.
“Young Mistress!!”
Unfortunately, he was a moment too late.
“Wh—”
Before Yun Xi could finish her sentence, the snow ox’s hard skull slammed into her stomach, cutting her off.
“Gah–!”
Crash—thump, thump, thump—
Yun Xi flew across the snow like a skipping stone, bouncing several times and smashing into two thick pine trees before a third tree stopped her.
She coughed up blood, struggled to lift her head, and glared at the snow ox.
“You beast!! I’ll—”
Step—step—
The snow ox faced Yun Xi, its eyes full of anger, and scraped the ground with its hoof, ready to charge again.
Zhang Yihe drew his spirit sword and stabbed it into the ox’s butt.
“You dare to harm the Young Mistress!? take this! Ah—!”
But the stab only angered the ox, which then simply knocked Zhang Yihe aside and charged at Yun Xi again.
“Dammit…”
Seeing the ox, with a sword in its butt, charging again, Yun Xi realized Zhang Yihe was a curse. If he didn’t get her killed, he wouldn’t rest.
She tried to stand but found her legs unresponsive. The approaching ox meant certain death.
“Zhang Yihe!! In the next life, stay away from me!!”
“Young Mistress! Move!!”
“I can’t… move…”
A black shadow flashed from the forest, passing Yun Xi.
Boom—
Snow exploded around the tree Yun Xi was against, covering everything in four feet of snow.
Zhang Yihe, lying on the ground with his mouth open, was speechless.
“Young Mistress… I…”
Then, he heard light footsteps approaching.
Swish—swish—
A light female voice said, “Here.”
He turned to see a girl in blue, with orange eyes, holding the Young Mistress in her arms.
Pei Lengxue looked at his dazed expression and asked, “Are you alright?”
“Uh…” Zhang Yihe snapped out of it. “Thank you for saving us.”
“Mm.”
Yun Xi, in a daze, looked at Pei Lengxue, puzzled but impressed by her cold demeanor.
She quickly regained her composure.
“Thank you, but–cough—let’s run. That snow ox…”
“It’s fine. I’ll handle it.”
Pei Lengxue gently put Yun Xi down and walked forward.
Her steps were light, leaving no traces in the snow.
As she moved, she made a sword gesture, and a blue light flew from her storage bag, transforming into a spirit sword in her right hand.
The snow ox, recovering from its daze, looked their way, angrier than ever.
Moo—!!
A gust of wind followed its roar, but Pei Lengxue remained calm, swinging her spirit sword.
The spiritual wind split, blowing snow everywhere but leaving the ground around her and the two behind her untouched.
Yun Xi and Zhang Yihe watched in awe.
The wind, an intangible force, was split by a mere sword swing, and her movement was effortless.
The snow ox, seeing its roar ineffective, hesitated but charged in anger, tearing up the forest behind it.
Pei Lengxue bent her knees, lowered her center of gravity, and stepped forward.
Swish—
In an instant, she and the ox swapped places, both motionless.
Snowflakes fell into Yun Xi’s eyes, making her blink. In the next moment, Pei Lengxue’s blue sleeve tore slightly, revealing her jade-like arm.
The snow ox, however, had ten gashes, bleeding and splitting into ten pieces, and then it collapsed in the snow.
