Volume 3 Chapter 2 / Chapter 168: Junior Sister, Blurted Out
The sun dipped below the western horizon, and a gentle breeze danced through the drifting clouds. Ye Anping and his companions arrived at the Hundred Lotus Sect during dinnertime.
As they ascended, they passed many disciples hurrying along the mountain paths toward the cafeteria, occasionally pausing to nibble on snacks purchased from roadside pavilions. Since Ye Anping and Pei Lengxue were currently dressed in Profound Star Sect uniforms, the disciples they encountered politely moved aside, greeting them with cupped hands and a, “Greetings to senior Profound Star Sect members!”
Only the slightly older disciples greeted them with, “Young Master, Miss Pei, you’re back!”
Ye Anping was quite moved throughout their journey, marveling at how much the Hundred Lotus Sect had grown in the past year. A rough estimate revealed that there were now a thousand disciples within the sect. Just one year ago, there had only been a few hundred.
While he couldn’t remember every disciple’s name the way Li Qianjin remembered every member of Chi Dragon Mansion, he could at least tell whether or not a person was a disciple of the Hundred Lotus Sect by their face.
Now, there were many new faces within the sect, and even the the Hundred Lotus Sect uniforms had been updated, bearing little resemblance to the uniform in his bag of holding.
The sect thrived, bursting with vitality, and seeing it prosper gave him the same satisfying feeling one might get from developing a thriving farm.
However, whenever he felt contentment over the growth of the sect, his father would inevitably deliver a thunderbolt surprise upon him.
On Middle Peak’s central square, a massive statue over thirty meters tall, carved to resemble his father, stood erected.
Within the Spirit Pet Hall, half a dozen disciples surrounded a pure-blooded crane mount valued at over ninety thousand spirit stones, cleaning its droppings and grooming its feathers.
Forget about the statue—though it was a bit tacky, it wasn’t unreasonable for a sect to have a statue of its leader. But what was with that pure-blooded, ninety-thousand-spirit-stones black crane?
Ye Anping had looked into it before. In this world, most spirit pets used as mounts were disappointments, with the exception of mythical beasts like dragons, phoenixes, and tortoises. Unlike in the game, where they provided various stat boosts, in reality, these creatures’ sole advantages lay in their looks and the air of mysteriousness one gained by riding them.
The bird’s flight was steady, but that was about it. Riding a bird into battle was suicidal, and fleeing on one’s back would be equally so; it flew slower than even his shoddy, low-quality flying sword.
If Ye Ao had purchased a ten-thousand-spirit-stones pet to ride around for the sake of appearances at the sect’s grand meetings, Ye Anping wouldn’t have said anything. But ninety thousand? For a smelly bird? And he’d even arranged for several disciples to shovel its shit?
The Hundred Lotus Sect hadn’t yet become a first-rate sect, but his dad was already determined to act like a first-rate Sect Master.
Fucking hell, mother, why aren’t you keeping that wastrel of a father of mine in check?
Ye Anping walked along the mountain path toward Heavenly Pavilion, his expression darkening with every step. From time to time, he felt Zhuang Hu’s gaze upon him, his brow furrowed in confusion.
He could guess what Zhuang Hu was thinking. It was said that like father, like son; a son’s character tended to be similar to his father’s. Zhuang Hu likely wondered how a cultivator as extravagant and oblivious as his father could have raised a son who was so intelligent, accomplished, well-read, humble, and capable.
Ye Anping sighed as he arrived before Heavenly Pavilion. He told Zhuang Hu and Atin to wait outside while he went in with Junior Sister.
But just as he was about to ascend the stairs and knock on the door, he noticed that Pei Lengxue, who had been holding his hand this whole time, looked anxious. She stared at the ground, her lips muttering something under her breath.
“Junior Sister?”
Pei Lengxue started, then slowly lifted her head and pressed her lips together.
“Wha–what is it?”
“That’s what I want to ask, what’s wrong?” Ye Anping glanced at her flushed cheeks, then asked, bewildered, “What are you nervous for? This is our home.”
“Mm…home…”
Pei Lengxue pressed her lips together, nodding slightly. She took a deep breath, then patted her cheek as if to give herself some encouragement. Reciting the story she had been practicing on the way, she exhaled, “All right, let’s go!”
Ye Anping was a bit confused, but he didn’t pay it much mind. Leading his Junior Sister up the steps, he knocked on the door of the pavilion.
“Come in!”
The door creaked open, revealing the scent of sandalwood. Ye Ao sat at a jade desk in the center of the Heavenly Pavilion, twirling a jade walnut in his hands as he doodled on a piece of paper with a brush. He looked up, glanced at the door, then lowered his head to continue his work. But after a moment’s thought, he realized something was amiss and jerked his head back up. “Ping’er?! Pei girl?! What are you two doing back here?”
“We can’t come back?” Ye Anping knitted his brows slightly, then stepped forward. “Dad, where’s Mom?”
Ye Ao rose quickly to his feet, approaching Ye Anping and examining him from head to toe. His eyes widened in surprise momentarily before he asked, “How are you already in the middle stage of Foundation Establishment? It’s been less than half a year since you left.”
“I ran into some good opportunities. How about my mom?”
Ye Ao sucked in a breath. “You’re back, and you don’t even ask about your dad, only your mom? She’s meditating upstairs.”
“Oh.”
Ye Anping turned to head upstairs, but Ye Ao stopped him. He grinned, clapped Ye Anping on the shoulder, glanced at Pei Lengxue, then draped an arm over her shoulders, and dragged them both out the door.
“C’mere, let’s take a stroll around the Hundred Lotus Sect. You haven’t been back for a whole year, and there’ve been lots of changes. I’m sure you’ve seen our new main gate, right? What do you think?”
Ye Anping squinted slightly, saying nothing.
Pei Lengxue responded awkwardly, “Mn…it’s…. beautiful.”
“Hey! That’s right, I knew it was gonna be good-looking. Even Pei girl think so. Yulan kept telling me that the old gate was ugly, so I spent sixty thousand spirit stones on this new one. How could it not be good-looking?”
Ye Anping’s eyes narrowed further. “Sixty thousand? Did you tell Mom?”
“Nope, just you.”
“Oh.” Ye Anping raised an eyebrow, pausing his steps, and asked, “What about the crane from the Spirit Pet Hall?”
“You’ve already seen it?” Ye Ao’s eyebrows rose, and he grinned as he showed off. “I was gonna give you a surprise, but come, come, I’ll take you both for a ride. It’s incredibly steady in flight, and the feathers are so soft. Pei girl will love it.”
As he spoke, Ye Anping suddenly noticed a silhouette drift down from the second floor, landing behind them. Upon realizing it was his mother, his eyebrows lifted, and he asked, “Dad, how much did you pay for that crane?”
Ye Ao furrowed his brow, returning the question. “Why do you ask? It was quite expensive.”
Ye Anping gave his father a sly smile, blinking his right eye. “Dad, just tell me so I can be in the know. Don’t worry, I won’t tell Mom.”
“Uh…sure.” Ye Ao laughed, holding up eight fingers on one hand. “This many.”
“I see…” Ye Anping responded, though inwardly he was baffled; he had no idea how much eight fingers meant.
“Eighty thousand?”
“Tsk…add another zero.”
Ye Anping feigned surprise. “Eight hundred thousand?! Isn’t that so expensive?”
Ye Ao shook his head, patting his son’s back. “You little rascal, I bought that crane for 880,000! Let me tell you, it’s a pure-blooded crane, and a top-notch one at that. I had a friend in the Beastfeather Sect reserve it for me, and this was even at a discount for friends and family. If it were to be auctioned, it’d go for at least a million and a half, no less.”
“Oh?”
Kong Yulan’s voice came from behind him.
Instantly, Ye Ao stiffened, then turned his head around with a shaky click of his jaw, the veins on Kong Yulan forehead popping as he swallowed.
“Yulan, ah—listen, I—hey! Hey—”
Before he could finish his excuse, Kong Yulan reached out and grabbed him by the ear, interrupting: “880,000? And what did you tell me last time? That an elder from the Beastfeather Sect gifted it to you, right? Huh? And I was just wondering—why would they gift something so expensive?”
“Hey, hey, hey—aren’t these—aren’t we living the high life now? Can’t we buy a few—”
“The high life? Eighty-eight thousand spirit stones—wouldn’t it be better to leave that for Ping’er and Pei girl’s cultivation? Or to add a dozen more pill furnaces or spiritual arrays for the sect? And you’ve gone and spent it on a bald, smelly bird?!”
“Y-Y-Y–Yulan, didn’t you say it was comfortable last time you sat on it?”
“I didn’t know you’d spent 880.000 spirit stones on a smelly bird! 880.000 spirit stones! If you put that under your butt, would you feel comfortable?!”
Ye Ao raised an eyebrow. “I–I would.”
“Tsk—”
“Yulan, wait, wait!! Ah—ah ah—Pei girl, Pei girl, quickly help me say something to persuade your mistress…”
“Ah… say…” Pei Lengxue was stunned, feeling a bit nervous. She took a deep breath, “My senior brother and I slept together…”
…
…
…
?
Ye Anping originally stood by with the mindset of watching a show, grinning as he watched his mother scold his father. But when his junior sister said this, he could no longer smile. His eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at his junior sister.
“What?”
The tussling between Ye Ao and Kong Yulan also abruptly stopped. They both turned their heads to stare at her, eyes wide.
?
?
“Huh?” “Hmm?”
Under the gaze of the three, Pei Lengxue suddenly realized what she had said. Her face flushed, and she lowered her head in embarrassment, feeling remorseful. Uncle Ye had asked her to persuade her, so how did she end up blurting that out?
She had originally intended to say it later. She had been nervously rehearsing her words in her mind all the way there.
Ye Ao and Kong Yulan stared at Pei Lengxue for a while, then suddenly shifted their gaze to Ye Anping, making his scalp tingle.
Ye Anping opened his mouth as if to speak, hesitated for a long time, and finally squeezed out a sentence:
“This sleep is not that sleep.”
Ye Ao and Kong Yulan looked puzzled and shook their heads, indicating they didn’t understand.
Seeing this, Ye Anping hesitated for a while, then turned and pushed Pei Lengxue out of the pavilion:
“Tsk, junior sister, you stay outside for now.”
Bang—
The pavilion door closed.
Pei Lengxue shrank her neck, turned to look at Zhuang Hu and Zhuang Atin waiting at the bottom of the steps, and softly responded, “Oh…”
