Chapter 3: Seeds of Expansion
Kieran sat back in his creaky chair, rubbing his eyes as they adjusted to the glow of the screen. The Urban Farmer System had been active for a few days now, and he'd grown more accustomed to it than he ever expected. The apartment—his tiny, cramped sanctuary in the middle of the city—was becoming an odd hybrid of high-tech devices, plants, and gardening supplies. It was a mess, to be honest, but it felt oddly right. He could smell the fresh earth in the air, the faint aroma of growing lettuce and tomatoes that had become his new obsession.
The system had been kind, really. It had guided him through a series of simple tasks—watering, planting, harvesting—and each time, he'd been rewarded with system points. Not enough to blow his mind, but enough to make him feel like he was building something real. Like he wasn't just wasting away in a dead-end job and an even deader apartment.
He looked at the corner of the screen, where his system points were displayed: 15 Points. His heart sank. It wasn't a huge amount, but it was something. He needed 50 points for the thing he'd been eyeing—a Vertical Planter. A piece of equipment that promised to allow him to grow more crops in less space, which was crucial since he was living in an apartment with no yard and only a small balcony.
The lettuce was doing well, the tomatoes were ripening nicely, but Kieran knew that if he wanted to turn this little "urban farm" into something more, he'd need more than just the basics. He needed to make the next step. And for that, he needed 50 system points.
With a sigh, Kieran stood up from his chair and stretched. He wasn't about to let a measly 15 points stop him. There had to be something he could do.
He checked the Daily Tasks tab on the menu again, hoping there was something new. As his eyes scanned the list, he saw a task that caught his attention:
Plant 10 Lettuce Seeds. Reward: 15 System Points.
"Perfect," Kieran muttered to himself. 15 points was exactly what he needed. He hadn't planted lettuce in a while, mostly focusing on tomatoes, so this was a good opportunity to get back to basics.
The seed packet was sitting on the counter, right next to the old coffee machine he hadn't used in weeks. He grabbed it, opened it, and felt the tiny, smooth seeds between his fingers. There were only ten, but that was all he needed. The system didn't care how many seeds you planted in reality, as long as you followed the guidelines. He carefully arranged the pots in rows, filling each one with fresh soil and ensuring the seeds were placed the right distance apart.
"Alright, little guys," Kieran said to the seeds, his voice taking on a mock-serious tone. "Let's grow."
As he finished planting, the system chimed:
Task Complete! Reward: 15 System Points.
Kieran smiled as his points jumped up to 30. He had a long way to go to the 50 he needed, but he was getting closer. He checked the timer on his phone—it was almost time to water the plants. He'd learned quickly that the system liked consistency, and watering was one of the easiest ways to rack up points.
He grabbed the spray bottle, filled it with water, and began misting the lettuce and tomato plants. It was a calming ritual now, almost meditative. The gentle sound of the water hitting the soil, the faint smell of fresh produce, the way the leaves shimmered as they caught the light—it almost felt like he was doing something important. Something meaningful.
The system pinged again:
Daily Task Complete. Reward: 5 System Points.
35 points. Kieran was getting there. Slowly, but surely.
He took a moment to step back and look at the plants. The tomatoes were growing nicely, their skin ripening from green to a deep red. The lettuce, too, was thriving, even though it had only been a few days since he'd planted it. The vertical planter was still a dream, but in this small space, he'd built something that was beginning to feel like a foundation.
Kieran turned back to the system menu, scanning the available tasks. There weren't many that would give him a big boost right now, but the planting tasks were always a good bet. He saw a notification:
Harvest 5 Tomatoes. Reward: 10 System Points.
The tomatoes were ready. Kieran couldn't help but grin. Harvesting tomatoes wasn't just about getting points—it was about seeing the work pay off. He grabbed his gloves and headed over to the tomato vines. Each fruit was ripe and ready for picking, the plump orbs gleaming under the kitchen light. The system confirmed each tomato he harvested, rewarding him with points as it went:
Task Complete! Reward: 10 System Points.
His points jumped to 45. Not quite enough for the Vertical Planter, but close. He needed just 5 more points.
Kieran considered his options. He could wait for another task to pop up, but that could take a while. Or... he could try something a little more ambitious. He'd seen a Basic Fertilizer for free in the market section for the first purchase. He could use the fertilizer on his plants to help them grow faster, and maybe get a few extra harvests along the way.
You have purchased Basic Fertilizer.
Kieran took the small packet and sprinkled it carefully on the base of each plant. As the fertilizer touched the soil, the system chimed again:
Task Complete! Reward: 10 System Points.
"Alright, this is it," he said, rubbing his hands together. The Vertical Planter was within his grasp. He navigated to the Market tab and found the Vertical Planter listed for 50 points. His heart raced with anticipation. He clicked the button to buy it, and within moments, the system confirmed his purchase:
You have purchased the Vertical Planter.
Kieran couldn't suppress a grin as he watched the planter materialize in the middle of the room. It wasn't massive, but it wasn't tiny either. It was tall, cylindrical, and sleek, with multiple levels stacked one atop the other. Each level was designed to hold a small pot, and the system had even included special growing pods that would maximize the space. The planter was glowing faintly, almost as if it had a life of its own. It hummed softly, and Kieran swore it looked like it was waiting for him to use it.
He immediately filled the new planter with soil, carefully stacking the pots as the system guided him through the process. It took a little bit of time, but it was oddly satisfying. Once the planter was ready, Kieran planted the seeds he'd harvested from the tomatoes and lettuce into the new pots. The system congratulated him with a small "Task Complete" notification as he finished, and then reminded him to water the plants.
"Of course," Kieran said with a chuckle. He grabbed the spray bottle once more, misting the plants gently. The system chimed again:
Task Complete! Reward: 10 System Points.
Kieran had officially reached the next stage of his urban farm. The Vertical Planter had already begun to make a difference. He marveled at how much space he'd just gained. What had started as a few small pots on his counter was now an entire tower of potential.
He stood back and admired the setup. His lettuce was growing well, and his tomatoes were ripening faster than he could keep up with. The vertical planter was the key to unlocking even more space and more crops. It was the first step to what he hoped would be a thriving, sustainable urban farm.
Kieran looked at the system again. There were plenty of other items to buy—things like Weather Manipulation Devices and Advanced Fertilizers—but he knew he couldn't rush things. This was a marathon, not a sprint.
For now, he'd focus on keeping his crops healthy and expanding his little farm, one step at a time.
He sat down on the couch, letting out a long breath. It was the first time in a while that he'd felt truly satisfied with his progress. Sure, it wasn't much compared to what he wanted, but it was something. And for the first time in a long while, Kieran was looking forward to tomorrow.
