Chapter 6: Chapter 5:' The Shadow in the Night'
Aria woke up to the sound of her alarm blaring in her ear. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes, trying to shake off the lingering fear from her dream. Xavier's voice still echoed in her mind, his warning clear: "Be careful, Aria. They're coming for you."
She got dressed and headed downstairs to grab a quick breakfast before meeting Emily on their way to school. As she walked out the door, she felt a sense of unease settle over her.
Emily was already waiting for her at the corner, sipping on a coffee and checking her phone. "Hey, what's up?" she asked, noticing Aria's concerned expression.
Aria hesitated, unsure how to articulate the sense of foreboding that had settled over her. "Just a bad dream," she said finally.
The two friends exchanged a nervous glance before continuing on their way to school. As they walked, the air grew thick with an eerie, unnatural silence. The trees seemed to loom over them, their branches like skeletal fingers reaching out to snatch them.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows, her eyes blazing with an unnatural intensity. She was a woman, tall and imposing, with skin as pale as alabaster and hair as black as the night.
Aria's heart skipped a beat as the woman's gaze locked onto hers. There was something about her that seemed...off. Something that didn't quite add up.
"Run," Aria whispered, grabbing Emily's arm.
But it was too late. The woman lunged at them, her movements lightning-fast. Aria and Emily tried to defend themselves, but the woman's strength was overpowering.
Just as all hope seemed lost, a figure burst from the shadows, his eyes blazing with a fierce, supernatural energy. He was tall and lean, with skin as pale as the woman's and hair as black as the night. But his eyes...his eyes were different. They burned with an inner fire, a fierce, wild power that seemed to electrify the air around him.
As Hunter fought off the woman, Aria and Emily watched in awe. When the woman lay motionless on the ground, Hunter turned to them, his eyes burning with an intense energy. " Who are you? ". Aria asked a bit curious.
"My name is Hunter," he said, his voice low and husky.
Aria's eyes narrowed, a spark of recognition igniting within her. "Hunter," she repeated. "So you're Hunter. You're one of Xavier's friends he's been talking about."
Hunter's expression changed, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "You know Xavier?" he asked.
Emily nodded. "Yeah, we're friends with him. He's been telling us about you and your friends."
Hunter's gaze locked onto Aria's, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "What did Xavier tell you?" he asked.
Aria hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "Just that you guys used to be friends, but you lost touch," she said.
Hunter's expression turned serious, his eyes clouding over with a mixture of emotions. "That's right," he said. "We used to be close, but things...changed."
Aria's eyes locked onto Hunter's, a sense of understanding passing between them. "What happened?" she asked.
But before Hunter could answer, he glanced around, his eyes scanning the surrounding area. "I have to go," he said. "But I'll be back. And next time, I won't be the only one."
With that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd, leaving Aria and Emily staring after him in confusion.
Later, when Aria and Emily meet up with Xavier at school:
"Hey, what's going on?" Xavier asked, noticing their worried expressions.
Aria hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about Xavier's kind eyes put her at ease. "We were attacked on the way here," she said finally. "But Hunter showed up and saved us."
Xavier's expression changed, a look of surprise and concern crossing his face. "Hunter?" he repeated. "I didn't think he'd show up so soon."
Aria's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with questions. "What's going on, Xavier?" she asked. "What's happening with Hunter and these attacks?"
Xavier's expression turned serious, his eyes clouding over with a mixture of emotions. "I'll tell you're everything," he said. "But not here. Not now. After class, meet me in the cafeteria and I'll explain everything".As they walked to their next class, Aria couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She had so many questions about Hunter, Xavier, and the supernatural world they seemed to be a part of.
When they finally sat down in class, Aria's mind began to wander. She couldn't focus on the lesson, her thoughts consumed by visions of Hunter fighting off the woman and Xavier's cryptic warnings.
As soon as the bell rang, signaling the end of class, Aria grabbed Emily's arm. "Let's go meet Xavier in the cafeteria," she said. "He said he'd explain everything."
Emily nodded, and they set off to find Xavier. They finally tracked him down in the cafeteria, sitting at a table with a serious expression.
"Hey, guys," he said, as they approached. "I'm glad you're here. We need to talk."
Aria slid into the seat across from him, her eyes locked on his. "So, what's going on?" she asked.
Xavier took a deep breath before beginning his story.
"Hunter, Freya, Scarlet, and I...we used to be inseparable," he said. "We grew up together, exploring the supernatural world and learning how to control our powers."
Aria and Emily listened intently as Xavier told them about their past adventures, their laughter and their tears.
"But as we got older, things started to change," Xavier continued. "We began to drift apart, and our friendships started to fray."
Aria's eyes locked onto Xavier's. "What happened?" she asked.
Xavier's expression turned somber. "Hunter and I...we had a falling out," he said. "We disagreed on how to handle a situation, and it drove a wedge between us."
Emily's eyes were wide with curiosity. "What situation?" she asked.
Xavier hesitated, as if unsure how much to reveal. "It's a long story," he said. "But let's just say that it involved a powerful supernatural artifact, and we had different opinions on how to handle it."
Aria's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with questions. "And what about Freya and Scarlet?" she asked.
Xavier's expression turned wistful. "They were always the wild cards," he said. "They had their own agendas, and they weren't afraid to take risks."
Just then, Emily spoke up. "Xavier, can I ask you something?" she said.
Xavier nodded, his expression serious. "Of course, Emily. What is it?"
Emily hesitated, unsure how to phrase her question. "Do you think Hunter is here to help us, or is he just looking out for himself?" she asked.
Xavier's expression turned thoughtful, and he looked away for a moment before answering. "I think Hunter is a bit of both," he said. "He's definitely looking out for himself, but at the same time, I think he genuinely wants to help us."
Aria's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with questions. "Why do you think that?" she asked.
Xavier's expression turned serious. "Because Hunter has always been a bit of a loner," he said. "But when he cares about someone, he'll do anything to protect them. And I think he cares about us, even if he doesn't always show it."
As Xavier finished speaking, Aria felt a sense of understanding wash over her. She realized that Hunter was a complex person with his own motivations and desires, and that he was capable of both good and bad.
But as she looked at Xavier, she saw a hint of concern in his eyes. She felt a sense of trust and comfort in his presence, and she knew that she could rely on him to keep her safe.
"Xavier, what's wrong?" Aria asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "You seem worried."
Xavier's gaze met hers, and for a moment, they just looked at each other. Aria felt a flutter in her chest as she saw the concern etched on Xavier's face.
"I think we're in more danger than we realize," Xavier said, his voice low and serious. "And I think Hunter's return is just the beginning."
Aria's eyes never left Xavier's face as he spoke. She felt a sense of tension between them, and she couldn't help but wonder if he felt the same way.
As they sat there, the silence between them was palpable. Aria felt like she was drowning in Xavier's eyes, and she couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking.
But before she could say anything, Xavier stood up, his expression serious. "We should get out of here," he said. "It's not safe to stay in one place for too long."
Aria nodded, feeling a sense of disappointment wash over her. She didn't want the moment to end, but she knew that they had to be careful.
As they walked out of the cafeteria, Aria felt Xavier's hand brush against hers. It was a subtle touch, but it sent shivers down her spine.
She looked up at Xavier, and their eyes met for a brief moment. Aria felt like she saw something there, something that looked like attraction.
But before she could say anything, Xavier looked away, his expression neutral.
Aria felt a sense of confusion wash over her. Had she imagined the whole thing? Or was there really something between her and Xavier?
