Chapter 56: Chapter 56: The Rose Flame in Hand
Lu Jun's gaze remained steady, his heart calm and unhurried.
Originally, he could have killed these four people outright with a soul attack. But things were different now. As a psychic mage, he had absolute confidence in saving them. These four demon hunters weren't inherently evil, and since he had the capacity, he decided to lend a hand.
He wasn't a good person, nor was he evil.
Tang Yue, the Enforcer, wanted to save them out of her duty. However, her efforts seemed futile. The insidious nature of curse mages lay in the fact that even if the caster was obliterated, the Evil Spider's Web they deployed remained intact.
"Let's go. He's already noticed us."
Seeing the outsiders trapped, Lu Jun spoke flatly. He stepped away from the soft and warm body near him and walked out of the dense forest.
By the dried reservoir, the two opposing groups froze, each reacting differently. Those trapped within the Evil Spider's Web from the Dongfang family showed joy on their faces, their lips moving as though to plead for rescue.
Meanwhile, Zhao He glanced over, sneering. "So, the rats in the gutter finally came out? What's the matter—no more sneaking around?"
Tang Yue righteously replied, "Zhao He, you've violated the Magic Association's treaty and committed heinous crimes. Today, you will be brought to justice!"
"Hah!" Zhao He's greedy gaze locked onto Tang Yue as he laughed. "I think I'll be adding two more crimes today: first, killing an Enforcer, and second… kehekehekeh."
Before he could finish, Tang Yue interrupted coldly, "You mean with your despicable drugging tactics?"
"Huh?" Chao He paused in confusion. "You knew, and you still dared to come?"
Buzz, buzz, buzz!
Before he could react, the unremarkable young man beside her suddenly acted.
"Mist of Fear."
Lu Jun's eyes turned black and white. A strong psychic impact surged forward. Hidden within it was Spiritual Ripple: Psychic Impact. Amidst the faint, starry brilliance of his psychic domain, a translucent, crystalline flying sword emerged—it was the Sword of the Mind he had honed over the past ten days.
Previously, he had no test subject to try it on. Now, one had come to him. This human scum was perfect for a test.
As a curse mage standing near the reservoir, Chao He's expression shifted. His rich experience led him to focus his spiritual energy, bracing for the crimson nightmare that was about to descend.
He sneered inwardly, "I've practiced curse magic for years and reached the First Realm. Trying to use psychic magic against me? You must not know how to die."
But contrary to his expectations, there was no Eye of Fear. Instead, he caught a flicker of strange, transparent radiance. As he puzzled over it, a sudden, excruciating pain tore through his mind. His gathered spiritual strength collapsed like paper, as if a flying sword had split his mental world in two. It felt as if a massive nail had been hammered into his skull, mercilessly stirring his brain.
"AAAH!" Zhao He screamed in agony, blood pouring from his seven orifices. He collapsed to the ground, clutching his head and writhing in torment. His spiritual world visibly crumbled, one corner of his dual-element nebula destabilizing, and his magic energy drained rapidly.
But it didn't end there. Darkness enveloped his vision, and a pair of crimson, sinister eyes loomed before him. His heart convulsed violently.
"Despicable!" he thought, "He called it Mist of Fear but used something else entirely!"
Lu Jun's face turned slightly pale. The move had drained most of his psychic energy. Additionally, summoning the Sword of the Mind meant another ten days of refinement before it could be used again.
To some extent, this was no longer just Psychic Impact. It bordered on the realm of self-created magic.
Typically, this level of magic belonged to advanced mages, as it transcended frameworks and developed variants. The key factors were increased elemental affinity and elevated spiritual realms.
For psychic mages, spiritual intent was their element, allowing such experimentation.
This technique was devastating, as evidenced by Zhao He's state. It had utterly destroyed him in one strike. Chao He was no ordinary mage—he had even reached the First Realm!
Satisfied, Lu Jun nodded. Against a typical mid-tier mage, this would have been an instant kill. This technique was a true trump card.
Mental attacks were almost invincible. Magical tools like armor, shields, and defensive spells—Water Defense, Mountain Shield, Light Wall—were useless against them. Only psychic magic tools or counter-spells could resist them.
They were almost unstoppable.
Following the principle of eliminating threats, Lu Jun summoned his metallic Gold Sword and stepped toward the incapacitated Zhao He. Swinging the sword down, he decapitated Zhao He cleanly. Blood sprayed, and the head rolled to the ground.
Specks of blood dotted Lu Jun's face, but his expression remained indifferent.
This was his first time killing a person, yet it stirred no feelings within him. Compared to the brutality of fighting demons, this was tame.
Still, something within him shifted. Breaking the taboo of harming others, he realized that when pushed, he could strike ruthlessly.
Tang Yue, standing nearby, looked on in shock. She hadn't expected a student to act so decisively and effectively. Without her intervention, he had resolved the situation and taken down a notorious fugitive.
Lu Jun turned to the fiery red pillar of Rose Flame within the reservoir's crevice. A layer of azure water covered his body as he used Water Defense to resist the intense heat. The air shimmered with distortion.
Carefully, he channeled his metallic magic energy to guide the flame into a specialized container. Once the box was sealed, the rose-colored radiance dimmed.
A top-tier fire-element Spirit Seed, the Rose Flame, was now in his hands!
Exhaling softly, Lu Jun turned to the four people still trapped in the Evil Spider's Web. Above their heads, black-red demonic spiders loomed, their ghastly pincers drawing out translucent strands of soul energy.
If left unattended, the four would soon lose their souls and die.
These mid-tier mages were unconscious.
Lu Jun focused his spiritual energy, creating ripples of translucent light. His eyes shone with white brilliance.
Spiritual Ripple: Psychic Wall!
In the unseen psychic realm, four dull, lifeless "mental lakes" suddenly erected translucent barriers, blocking the black-red claws.
Moments later, Dongfang Jun and the others awoke. Their dormant mental energies reactivated as they concentrated to fight off the curse.
The massive demonic spider hissed angrily. Yet, under the combined efforts of the psychic mage and the mid-tier mages, the curse spell was broken.
The demonic spider faded into the void, retreating to the Dark Plane. The Soul Web dissolved.
Dongfang Jun and the others collapsed weakly. Hoarsely, they said, "Thank you, brother. The Dongfang family will never forget your kindness."
Lu Jun waved dismissively, uninterested. His gaze lingered on the spot where the demonic spider had disappeared. He seemed deep in thought.
Black magic's four branches were deeply connected to the mythical Dark Plane. It seemed the rulers of that realm deliberately scattered traps among humans.
Scanning the four, he noted that the spider had drained a significant portion of their souls. It would take a long time for them to recover, and even then, lingering effects were likely.
Curse mages were of two kinds: those who tormented and those who devoured souls. The former inflicted pain, suitable for combat, while the latter's techniques were purely lethal.
The Magic Association strictly prohibited soul-devouring curses. Surviving one often left severe, lifelong aftereffects. Curse magic was powerful, difficult to defend against, and remained a nightmare for even seasoned mages.
