Chapter 3: The Birth of Spider-Man?
Dusk was approaching night.
"This is the first time I have come to a big company," Peter exclaimed as he, Norton, and Gwen arrived at the front desk of Osborn Industries.
Dr. Connors led the three of them, along with a group of students, to visit various research departments within Osborn Industries. He explained the most about biological research. During this period, Norton couldn't help but look around curiously, wondering what the mutant spiders were doing.
"This is the laboratory of Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius. He is not in the lab now, and there is no need for us to go in," Connors said, pointing to a darkened laboratory. Norton could vaguely see tentacle-like machinery inside and guessed that it might belong to one of Spider-Man's future villains, Doctor Octopus.
"Okay, students, I will take you to learn about a recent new study." Connors led everyone to a laboratory with many dense spider webs in the center. Several spiders were crawling on them. Norton felt certain that they were the mutant spiders.
There was a glass barrier between them and these mutant spiders. Everyone curiously pressed against it to observe the spiders. Coincidentally, a researcher in a white coat walked in, opened a window, and took one of the spiders. However, what no one knew was that three mutated spiders secretly escaped at that moment.
One crawled into Gwen's backpack, the other into Norton's sleeve, where it stood still as time seemed to stop. The last one was more impatient. It climbed onto Peter's collar and bit him on the neck.
"Ah!" Peter cried out in pain and slapped the back of his neck. Everyone in the laboratory was attracted by his cry. Peter quickly composed himself until everyone resumed observing the mutant spiders.
Peter walked over to Norton and Gwen, turned the back of his head towards them, and whispered, "Is there something on it?"
Seeing the spider smashed on his neck, Gwen's face changed, "That's disgusting."
"I suggest you go home first, Peter," Norton advised, knowing that Peter would have a fever and wake up with Spider-Man's abilities the next day.
Peter trusted Norton's words. The exhibition was nearing its end, so he decided to leave early to avoid worrying the Parker couple.
"Okay, I'll go back now. Remember to say goodbye to Dr. Connors for me," Peter said as he left the laboratory.
After Peter left, Gwen asked Norton, "What was that on Peter's neck just now?"
Since the mutated spider was smashed to pieces, it was impossible to determine what it was. "I don't know. We should go too; the exhibition is over," Norton replied.
The exhibition concluded with Peter's departure. Norton and Gwen exchanged glances, planning to kiss goodbye when George honked his police car horn from the side of the road.
"Damn," Gwen muttered, rolling her eyes. George clearly approved of their relationship but always managed to interrupt at critical moments.
Just when Norton was about to laugh, a stabbing pain surged from his hand, causing him to cry out in pain. He swung it vigorously, only to see a small black figure fly out. Norton observed his injured palm and noticed two small hole-like wounds. An ominous premonition settled over him as he examined these wounds. "Oh my God! I have to go home quickly to treat the wound," he exclaimed. Gwen, who was next to him, noticed Norton's wound and hurriedly pulled him into George's police car.
As for the mutated spider that flew out, it landed precisely on a girl of the same age as Norton. The girl seemed to sense it and stopped to look around. "What's wrong, Cindy?" her concerned best friend asked. "It's nothing, let's go back," Cindy replied as the mutated spider on her body slowly crawled into her backpack, making her its new target.
At Gwen's home, Gwen helped Norton treat the wound. "My God, this wound seems to be a spider bite," Gwen observed with some distress. If Norton knew what she was thinking, he would definitely exclaim, "Girl, there is something wrong with you!" What Norton was pondering was whether it was a mutated spider or an ordinary one that bit him. In any case, he had to stay at Gwen's for the night, something Gwen's parents, George and his wife, agreed to as long as they slept in separate rooms.
Later, Norton went to take a shower, and upon returning, he heard Gwen scream. He ran to her room and saw her standing there, looking at her hands. Norton glanced around and found the corpse of a bug on the floor. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a spider! "Does it hurt?" Norton said to Gwen, holding her hand with concern. Before Gwen could respond, George coughed to get their attention and said, "Norton, I didn't expect you to be so impatient. You shouldn't..." Before he could finish, Gwen interrupted, blushing, "Dad!! I was just startled by the bug!" She pointed to the squished spider on the floor. Realizing his mistake, George smiled awkwardly and said, "Ahahaha, I still have something to do, you two talk." He left Gwen's room, closing the door behind him. It wasn't entirely George's fault; if he heard his daughter scream and saw Norton holding her hand, he might have misunderstood the situation.
At the moment, Norton was more concerned with Gwen's wound, feeling an ominous premonition as if the Marvel world around him was beginning to change.
