Chapter 14
The first time I teleported to the center, I realized one thing.
Ryu Won was very narrow-minded.
I rubbed my eyes hard with my hands, and if a hand hadn’t appeared from the side to stop me, I would have had rabbit eyes by now.
The Soul Protection Center was a high-rise concrete building.
If it weren’t for the strangely connected portal, the interior would have been as stylish and comfortable as the exterior.
However, the village was far from the center, a collection of buildings with a look and structure that seemed far removed from the modern era.
While the Soul Protection Center felt like a Seoul skyscraper, the village was made up of one-story wooden buildings with a medieval feel.
“It’s kind of pretty, but it’s weird.” “Personally, I agree, but the spirits that live here are so powerful, it’s better to just let them do what they want.”I was surprised to learn that there were spirits living here. Who would have thought that spirits could build houses?
Ryu Won stopped at the entrance to the village, a hint of pity in his eyes.
Not knowing anything, I motioned for him to hurry. But I soon realized why Ryu Won gave her that look.
Inside the village, there were many spirits roaming the streets. The atmosphere was peaceful and warm, matching the appearance of the town.
I absorbed the atmosphere and smiled faintly. But when Ryu Won and I walked in, everyone looked at us like monkeys in a zoo.
Eye killers. There was no other word to describe what happened now.
Did it mean that they were looking at them in an unpleasant way?
No, they were all looking at me with smiles on their faces.
The strange thing was that all the spirits in the village were Phantoms in human form, just like Ryu Won.
He noticed the step and smiled with satisfaction.
“Mr. Ryu Won, are you okay? Everyone seems to be staring at us. Are they all from the center?” “I’m not from the center anymore, don’t worry, those idiots are just staring.”Before they knew it, they were in the center of the city, in the square.
Several streets branched off from the center of the circular plaza, each lined with one-story buildings.
The sumo wrestlers gathered in front of the clock tower in the center of the square noticed Ryu Won’s presence and moved out of the way.
He sat down and put his hands into the pockets of his uniform coat.
Suddenly, he began to search through all the pockets.
“Ah.” “Why? Is something wrong?”Ryu Won suddenly sighed when he realized that there was nothing in his pockets. The protruding ulnar bone rose up and then fell back down.
“I seem to have forgotten my capture tool. Ms. Yeon-young, do you see that clock tower over there?” “Yes, I can see it, but the time is not moving, is it?” “It’s just a decoration for now. Please stand in front of that clock tower and wait a moment. I’m going to find the capturing device and bring it back.” “Should I come with you?” “I’m going to teleport?” “Be safe.” “I’ll be careful.”At the word teleportation, I quickly cut Ryu Won off; he nodded good-naturedly as if he had expected such an answer.
Ryu Won opened a portal through his ring and returned to the center. Once he was gone, I looked around for a place to sit.
The back of my head was tingling, and I sensed that the air in the village had changed.
Turning my head as unnaturally as Chucky, I locked eyes with every spirit in town.
Standing in the middle of the clock tower, I walked to the left and then to the right, just in case.
Unfortunately, my gaze went exactly left and then right. The spirits were staring at me intently.
I clutched my head in embarrassment, but couldn’t think of a way to escape their gaze.
To organize my thoughts, I scanned the surrounding alleys.
There were several alleys surrounding the square, but the right side was simpler than the left.
There were shops at regular intervals and the alleys didn’t seem too narrow.
“I don’t know the way, so if I want to go alone, I should look around on the right side first.”I was so engrossed in figuring out the alleyways that I didn’t notice the sudden change in the atmosphere of the square.
The Phantom Spirits, who had been watching from the sidelines, slowly made their way towards me. Before I knew it, they had formed a tight circle around me.
A shiver ran down my spine, and I gently lifted my head to look at the various phantom spirits, who were all looking at me with amused expressions.
“Uh, who is that?” Woosh!I said one word, and they all started adding two words with clownish faces.
“Hey, where are you from, what’s your name, did you move from another branch?” “Why are you with Han Ryu Won? He’s in the village, isn’t our village going to disappear soon?” “Ahhhh, our chapter is really short of phantoms these days. We used to have a lot of them. Don’t you know that there is a shortage of phantoms these days?”I threw up my hands in embarrassment at the barrage of questions.
I took a few steps back to get some distance between them, but the spirits soon drew closer, and then I heard a voice that cleared up the confusion.
“What are you doing here?”The owner of the voice asked casually as she approached, an oak barrel slung over each shoulder.
Ting! The woman set the oak barrel on the ground and walked over to me.
It was empty and clinking loudly, indicating that it was filled with liquid, either alcohol or water.
The woman removed her white hood, revealing a soft golden haircut that glistened in the sunlight. She casually wiped the sweat from her neck with the bandana.
The muscles of her back were clearly visible behind her sleeveless top as she moved her arms to wipe away the sweat.
“Someone left this damn thing. Are you lost? If you’re looking for the center, I can help you find it.” “Oh no, I just came from the center on a mission.”Each time I spoke, the crowd around me clapped and cheered. The news that I had come out on a Center mission was enough to get them excited.
“What? You came out on a mission? Are you a phantom of the center?” “Yes, as of today I’ve been assigned to a special team.”The phantoms pushed their excited faces into me. If I was pushed any further by the ghosts here, I felt like I would fall backwards onto my ass.
“Really? The youngest member of the special team? I’m looking at the youngest member of the special team before I was reincarnated…” “Oh my God, really, I thought you were the last youngest person in my life.” “How many centuries has it been? Was our chapter even an area where a phantom could come?” “Enough!” Bang!As the phantom voices grew louder, the shorter woman picked up the oak barrel again and set it down to clear the air.
“Go back to your places, get away from her. Can’t you see she’s panicking? I don’t want her to say no to the youngest.”At the woman’s last words, the others began to back away and I let out the breath I’d been holding in.
“Thank you for your help.” “No offense, it’s just that this is a gathering place for the departed souls from the center. They have a soft spot for the younger ones. Anyway, it’s nice to see that you’re actually a phantom. It’s rare to see one these days.” “Really?” “But what about your clothes? They don’t even give them uniforms these days, they just make them work. I know you’re busy with the Snarl case, but I didn’t even recognize you as an employee of the center because of your clothes.”I tried to ignore the fatigue creeping in. The woman was trying to clear things up, but I had more questions than the group that had gathered earlier.
The woman’s words brought me back to my senses and I looked at their outfits.
Everyone seemed to be wearing black uniforms except Saeri, who was still wearing the same outfit I’d left in the forest.
“Most of them are wearing the clothes they wore in life, but I don’t recognize your outfit.”At the woman’s comment, I looked at the jeans I was wearing. I wondered what the standard for unfamiliar clothing was here.
The woman frowned and continued the heated discussion.
“If you’re in a hurry, you can borrow some of my clothes. See that orange roof over there behind the streetlight? That’s my shop.”The woman pointed, and there it was, a building with a bright orange roof that looked familiar.
“Uh, but is that what it’s supposed to be?” “What? Which one? What do you have?”I pointed to something bouncing and shimmering near the window.
