Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Otto
"Did the Valkyrie named Kallen really die like that?"
"What happened to the man named Otto, like Grandpa?"
After listening to Bai Mo's story, Theresa and Kiana asked hurriedly. Tears welled up in their eyes, as the story was so moving. Bronya and Mei were similarly affected.
"Yes, the Valkyrie named Kallen died at the hands of the Honkai Beast to protect the people," Bai Mo replied, shaking his head. "Later, the man named Otto took over the position of Archbishop of Schicksal after Kallen's death."
"What happened next? Tell us what happened after that. Didn't Otto live for five hundred years?" Theresa asked impatiently.
"Don't worry, don't worry, I'll tell you in detail," Bai Mo said, taking a deep breath. She recalled the original plot and prepared to tell it, but still planned to change it, as he couldn't recount it exactly.
"In the days that followed, a man named Otto was searching for a way to revive Kallen. He kept looking until one day, by some coincidence, he came into contact with the god of this world. So, he asked the god devoutly how to revive Kallen."
"But the god didn't answer his question. Instead, he just smiled lightly and took out a dagger and stabbed it into his own heart."
"Did the god not want to answer and then commit suicide?" Mei asked, puzzled.
"Isn't it said that God is omnipotent? How can it be like this?" Kiana said indignantly.
"At that time, Otto didn't understand why the god did this. He just thought that the god didn't want to answer his question. After all, to a god, humans are just humble ants, and they don't care about the wishes of ants at all," Bai Mo continued without directly answering their questions.
"But after this incident, Otto wasn't discouraged. Instead, he clung to his desire to revive Kallen and worked madly toward it. He also wanted to see the god again through his own efforts and wanted to ask Him why He did this."
"If God couldn't revive Kallen, how did Otto plan to do it?" Theresa asked, looking confused.
"There were many things involved. Otto even conducted human experiments to revive Kallen, using her DNA to make clones."
"Human experiments and cloning are illegal," Kiana exclaimed.
"For Otto, Kallen was everything. He was willing to do anything to revive her. He even became the Bishop of Schicksal because he thought it would make his plan more effective," Bai Mo explained.
"Can you really love someone to this extent?" Mei mused to herself.
"Bronya thinks that this man named Otto is very selfish," Bronya said.
"Yes, Otto is very selfish, incredibly so," Bai Mo admitted. "However, even though he conducted human experiments and cloning, which violated the law, it cannot be denied that during his time as Bishop of Schicksal, he used the organization to do many praiseworthy things. He protected many people and families and gave many hope."
"Although these were all byproducts of his quest to resurrect Kallen," Bai Mo continued after choosing his words carefully.
"Then, Bai Mo, what do you think of Otto in the story?" Mei asked.
"For me, I admire him in some ways, such as his love for Kallen. Who else would do something like this for love?" Bai Mo said. "Of course, Otto's unethical actions are indeed wrong, and he never denies them."
"My opinion of his actions is that I can understand them, but I cannot agree with them," Bai Mo added thoughtfully. "Otto is too controversial. He has both good and bad points, showing almost equal parts of positive and negative sides."
"Mei, what do you think of Otto?" Bai Mo asked in return.
"I suppose my opinion is similar to yours, Bai Mo. From his perspective, it's worth doing all this for the one he loves. But from the perspective of the law or others, the inhumane things Otto did are wrong."
"And everyone has the right to pursue their dreams, but no one can guarantee that everything they do in pursuit of those dreams is right."
"For instance, I, and even everyone, have made mistakes while pursuing our dreams, and Otto simply magnified those mistakes."
"But this is just a story, isn't it? How could there be such a person in real life?" Mei said slowly, looking at everyone.
Yes, everyone makes mistakes on the path to pursuing their dreams. Even if you believe you are right, to those you have harmed, you are a sinner.
The atmosphere became solemn for a while, and Bai Mo spoke again after a long pause.
"I won't go over all the details in the middle. I'll just tell you the ending."
"Hurry up, hurry up, what's the ending?" Kiana urged anxiously, while Mei and the others listened intently.
Looking at their expectant eyes, Bai Mo spoke slowly.
"At the end of the story, Otto went through various hardships. He met the god again, and this time he also gained part of the god's power."
"After that, using the god's power, Otto reached the root of the world and found the World Tree that carries thousands of worlds."
"Question, what is the World Tree?" Theresa asked, unable to resist her curiosity.
"An apple tree carries apples, and the World Tree carries countless parallel worlds. The world where Otto is is just one part of the World Tree. Do you understand this?" Bai Mo explained.
"I understand," the three nodded eagerly, motioning for Bai Mo to continue.
"Under the World Tree, Otto saw Kallen's death in countless parallel worlds. It was like a curse; no Otto could stop her death."
"Finally, the grief-stricken Otto used his own power and the god's power to forcibly stop Kallen's death. As a result, a new branch grew on the World Tree, creating a new world line where Kallen did not die."
"But..." Bai Mo hesitated before revealing the ending.
"What's the ending, Bai Mo, tell us quickly," Theresa urged, as Kiana, Mei, and Bronya looked at Bai Mo anxiously.
"Death is indeed the dissipation of consciousness. I will eventually die with all my sins. We cannot absorb the starlight that has also dissipated. Unless we reverse time, awaken the silent grave, and inject the common sense of life into the past that buried everything. I fooled my friends, fooled my loved ones, fooled the world and its rules. In order to give the only real you a second life, I am back, Kallen." This is one of Otto's last monologues.
"In the end, Otto understood the action that the god had taken at the beginning. To revive Kallen, the price was his own death," Bai Mo said quietly, and everyone's heads slowly lowered.
Obviously, this ending was too sad to accept immediately...
