Chapter Eight: Devouring God’s Chess
After a girl took a corner kick and hit him in the face, causing an own goal, soccer team captain Zhang Biaoyang would probably have a hard time holding his head high at school for a while.
To say that Yuyin’s kick, while she was good at sports, was mostly a coincidence—kicking a big living person in the face from dozens of meters away? That was still something to talk about.
Thus, Zhang Biaoyang suffered this loss but couldn’t blame Yuyin on the spot; otherwise, it would only make him look more embarrassed. After all, he was a big shot in the school.
Yuyin, however, tossed her long hair and didn’t even glance at Zhang Biaoyang sitting on the grass, remaining silent as she turned to leave, leaving everyone in awe.
This wasn’t Yuyin deliberately acting aloof; at that moment, she truly had no time to care about anything else.
At this moment, in Yuyin’s consciousness, some ancient and hazy words, as if formed by flowing coronal mass, began to appear. These words lingered, seemingly waiting for Yuyin to make a decision.
“Do you want to start Devouring God’s Chess?”
There were two more choices below.
“Want” “Really want”
…
Yuyin arrived at a secluded thicket behind the girls’ tennis club changing room.
She leaned against the white cement wall, her chest rising and falling deeply, not from nervousness but from having just experienced intense exercise.
She chose “Want.”
Although the two choices seemed to have no difference, she felt that “Really want” seemed a bit too forward.
In her vague, shadowy consciousness, the world transformed, and a vast land appeared before her, with distant mountain islands towering and clouds floating.
At the end of the clouds, it seemed she could see the edge of this world. She looked around, feeling as if she were hovering above an extremely large, square world…
“This feels like…”
Yuyin couldn’t help but recall a poem, “The sky is like a round cover, the land is like a chessboard, people are divided into black and white, competing for glory and disgrace.”
A chessboard.
This world really resembled an enormous chessboard. No wonder it was called “Devouring God’s Chess.”
“However, ‘Devouring God’s Chess’? That name is a bit too arrogant, isn’t it?” Yuyin couldn’t help but chuckle bitterly.
Dingling, a melodious, ancient sound like a wind chime rang out.
Five stone platforms, both illusory and real, appeared before her, each with smoke rising and five strange figures materializing.
In the center was a white ape.
Beside it was a hunchbacked little ghost holding a lantern, looking lewd.
Next to it was a human-faced snake-tailed carp swimming in place.
On the other side was a pair of birds snuggling together, occasionally making “Yao Ru, Yao Ru” calls.
The last stone platform held a shadow, the nature of which was unknown.
“Wait… aren’t these the monsters I saw last night?”
“Why are they appearing here?”
In front of Yuyin, a line of flowing words appeared in the space between her and the white ape, seemingly emanating a certain ancient and elusive will.
The words read: “To start Devouring God’s Chess, you must first obtain a chess piece.”
“A chess piece?”
Yuyin involuntarily looked at the white ape. Are these the chess pieces? But they looked vividly alive, no, they felt alive, watching her with a hint of malice just like last night.
New words appeared: “Do you want to try to entice this white ape?”
“Ah!?”
Yuyin couldn’t help but frown, “What nonsense!”
She indignantly reprimanded that ancient will…
The writing trembled, transforming into golden smoke, then shifting again.
“Well then, let’s put it another way. Do you want to use Soul Charm points to obtain a chess piece?”
At the same time, a few words appeared in the lower left corner of her consciousness.
“Soul Charm 5”
Soul Charm points? Yuyin recalled the 5 Soul Charm points she had gained from her earlier kick that shocked everyone and hit Zhang Biaoyang in the face.
The text read: “Spending 1 Soul Charm point allows you to attempt to charm this chess piece, but there is a chance of failure.”
Yuyin thought about her 5 Soul Charm points and decided to give it a try.
Looking at the white ape’s somewhat lewd gaze, Yuyin thought for a moment and chose the little ghost beside it.
How to charm, Yuyin wasn’t sure, but she felt inclined to choose this little ghost.
Ding!
The little ghost disappeared in a column of light and mist.
At this moment, an ancient will naturally guided Yuyin to look down. About ten meters below her feet, in a grassy area surrounded by trees, a group of five little ghosts appeared. Some held bamboo clappers, while others held gongs and lanterns, standing by waiting.
Success!
As Yuyin looked over, some ancient, shadowy words floated above their heads.
“Watchman Ghost, one star, white rank.”
“Do you want to send out the Watchman Ghost?” the text asked.
Yuyin didn’t know what would happen, but thought, “Let’s send it out and see…”
“Please be decisive.” The golden text grew larger.
The sound of rain startled Yuyin, who felt as if these words were warning her; if she hesitated, it seemed she would encounter some kind of danger.
“Deploy.” Yuyin thought firmly.
The previously aimless group of little ghosts immediately began to act, heading into the forest, but Yuyin realized that she seemed unable to control where they went or what they did.
Beyond this clearing, the world was shrouded in thick fog. Although Yuyin had a high vantage point, she could not see everything clearly. However, as these little ghosts patrolled and walked by, the surrounding mist would be dispersed.
Yet, after the little ghosts passed, the fog would return on its own.
“What are these little ghosts doing?”
No answer.
Yuyin watched the little ghosts with interest for a while; these creatures were not slacking off at all, patrolling swiftly through the forest. The sounds of gongs and clappers echoed through the misty woods, creating a truly eerie atmosphere.
About a quarter of an hour passed without any discoveries, and the little ghosts had already ventured quite far.
So, Yuyin controlled her consciousness and returned to the initial clearing.
The five stone platforms in the sky were still there.
“I still have 4 soul charms; let’s try to charm one more.”
This time, Yuyin chose the white ape.
Soul charm successful!
Three idle white apes appeared in the clearing.
“White Ape, one star, white grade, special ability: fruit picking, reminder: quite lecherous.”
“Deploy, deploy!”
Yuyin had no good feelings towards the lecherous male white ape, so she immediately sent it out, not caring if it got eaten by a tiger in the forest.
The white ape used all its limbs, climbing trees and weaving through them, emitting echoes of ape calls that resonated through the mountains and forests.
Wherever the white ape went, it could also disperse the fog, moving through the trees with more agility than the patrolling little ghosts.
After a long time, the white ape found some fruit and began to eat. After finishing, it hung lazily from a branch, yawning, living quite leisurely.
“……”
“Am I watching Animal Planet!?” Yuyin thought impatiently. These white apes were not only lecherous but also lazy? However, it seemed there was nothing she could do; she could only control their deployment but not give more commands.
At that moment, it seemed some commotion was coming from the direction of the patrolling little ghosts.
Yuyin hurriedly focused her consciousness in that direction.
She saw the patrolling little ghosts engaging in a fight with a mountain demon.
This mountain demon was over half a person tall, with a pig-like face, very robust, swinging a large wooden club.
One of the patrolling little ghosts had already been knocked down and was unable to get up. Yuyin felt a bit scared but also wanted to help her little ghost, yet there was nothing she could do but watch.
Finally, the little ghosts, relying on their numbers, defeated the mountain demon.
The mountain demon was surrounded by the little ghosts and was slowly beaten to death.
Yuyin couldn’t help but feel that although these creatures were not very strong, they were quite ruthless.
After the mountain demon died, it transformed into a hazy light mist, scattering into the sky above the forest.
“Disappeared?”
Just as Yuyin was puzzled, these beams of light mist suddenly flew towards her.
Yuyin instinctively wanted to dodge, but the light mist sparkled with a crystalline glow, moving quickly and soon seemed to fly into her body.
But at that moment, Yuyin only had consciousness; where was her body?
A sensation she had never experienced before, peculiar yet incredibly comfortable, emanated from her lower abdomen.
“Acquired source spirit, current source energy value 60,” the text stated.
