Chapter 216: Chapter 216: The Martian Princess and Lacus
On the asteroid, under the bright overhead lights, He Kui observed the current scene in the port. Aside from his parents and Cagalli, two GINNs and several small MS units were docked nearby.
"He Kui, you finally arrived! Look, we finally got these GINNs—" Hawke's words trailed off as he noticed the strange silence in the group. His gaze shifted between everyone, wondering what kind of family drama he had stumbled upon.
For a moment, Hawke's mind wandered to his daughter, who still worked as He Kui's secretary. He frowned slightly, wondering if his daughter was caught up in the complex web of He Kui's personal relationships.
Under their gazes, He Kui gave a small, resigned smile. "Alright, Cagalli can stay here," he said, before turning to Hawke. "Have the GINNs been outfitted with weapons?"
"Not yet. We're too close to the colony for that."
"I'll see what I can arrange," He Kui replied with a nod. "And what about the paperwork for the security company? Has it been finalized?"
"Yes, we secured the authorization as you requested," Hawke replied, though he added with concern, "However, we don't have the connections in security like we do in mining."
He Kui nodded, knowing the venture could be a risk but willing to try. "We'll manage for now."
"Also, take this!" Cagalli said, thrusting a tablet into his hands.
"What's this?" he asked, surprised by her tone.
"I logged all the crop planting data," Cagalli explained. "The efficiency is up by 15%—seems to be thanks to the system you developed."
"More or less," He Kui replied, shrugging modestly.
"But it's still too expensive," she said bluntly. "Only people with money, like you, can afford it."
He Kui smiled, knowing the cost was indeed high due to electricity and other expenses, which had only been increasing lately.
After a thorough discussion on company affairs and a shared homemade meal with his parents and Cagalli, He Kui returned to Sector One in May City. He took his time, not rushing to leave the port.
"Congratulations on the successful development of the Crab Demon!" came a cheerful, familiar voice as a beautiful young woman appeared against the backdrop of the starlit sky, looking almost like a goddess descending.
"Thank you. Just doing my job," He Kui replied with a smile, as he and Lacus walked together into a VIP lounge.
Lacus took in his scent as they walked. It wasn't Shi He or Su Lei's scent, but rather a subtle feminine fragrance. She couldn't help but wonder why He Kui seemed to attract so many admirers.
"He Kui has achieved so much on his own," Lacus said. "As we discussed, Chairman Malchio will be joining us soon."
"I'll arrange a meeting with him and my father. Is that acceptable?" Lacus asked with a gentle smile.
"Of course, thank you. But…" He Kui hesitated.
"The meeting will be fully confidential. Don't worry," Lacus assured him, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "By the way, are you sure you don't want to join the Clyne Faction?"
"Thank you for the offer," he replied with a small bow.
"Alright, I won't push," Lacus said with a playful shrug, dropping the matter with a smile. "Oh, and about the 10 million credits… the Defense Committee did grant you the funds, didn't they?"
Exposed for trying to appear frugal, He Kui chuckled lightly, knowing Lacus was only responsible for arranging the escort funds for Andrew and himself.
"Speaking of which, He Kui, you seem to have learned Andrew's identity," she remarked with a teasing smile.
"Well, only Lacus seems to worry about my safety," he replied with a smirk.
"Really? What about Shi He and Su Lei? Don't they care?" she teased.
"They do," he admitted, laughing as he looked away, embarrassed.
"So, what's this favor you mentioned?" Lacus asked, intrigued.
"It's about Su Lei's arranged marriage."
"Oh, that? There hasn't been any news, but what are you hoping for?"
"I'd like her genetic matching calculations to be paused."
Lacus's smile deepened. "Su Lei told me about it a while ago."
"…Thank you," he said, handing her two HAROs.
"Thank you," Lacus said, her smile lighting up. He Kui's skill in crafting HAROs now surpassed that of Aslan, their original creator. Both Lacus and her father knew maintaining good relations with He Kui would only benefit them in the future.
After bidding farewell to Lacus, He Kui headed directly to the Junk Guild.
"Welcome, Director He," the shopkeeper greeted him with his usual shrewd look.
Handing him a list, He Kui said, "I need these materials."
The shopkeeper signaled his assistant to watch the front as he escorted He Kui to the back room. There, Matthias and a young woman resembling Lacus awaited him with calm expressions.
"Director He, I heard you wanted to meet," Matthias said softly.
"Yes. Cagalli isn't returning."
"That's her choice," Matthias replied, smiling slightly. "She said Director He would keep her safe."
"…" He Kui's lips twitched before he switched topics. "Someone approached me."
"Oh?" Matthias's calm demeanor shifted slightly, the intrigue clear on his face.
"What did you tell them?"
"I didn't agree," He Kui replied.
"Smart move."
"Who are they?" He Kui pressed.
"Knowing too much might not be beneficial to you," Matthias said gravely.
"I hold a grudge against that organization. Maybe I could help you," He Kui offered.
"Why would you help me?" Matthias asked, his serious expression softening.
"To help myself as well," He Kui replied, his gaze briefly landing on the girl beside Matthias, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Lacus.
"I'll consider it, but going against them is far more challenging than any battlefield. You'll need even more strength."
"I understand," He Kui replied, knowing full well the threat they posed.
With that, he handed over three HAROs—two for the young woman, Setona, and one for Matthias.
"A small gift," he said, smiling.
Setona's face lit up as she accepted the HAROs, smiling happily. "Thank you, He Kui!"
Matthias sighed, accepting the gift despite knowing Setona's HAROs were far more valuable than his own.
With his objective complete, He Kui gave a small bow and excused himself, not lingering to see the faint, wistful look in Matthias's eyes.
