Who is Playing the Love Development Game in Gundam

Chapter 218: Chapter 218: Mentor’s Visit

The formal letter of appointment arrived for He Kui the next day, filled with various ceremonious expressions.

It seemed to be quite sincere.

"Congratulations, Director He," the District Chief, who had previously been sitting comfortably at the helm, now came to He Kui's living room.

Naturally, Talia accompanied him.

The District Chief now wore a noticeable smile.

While the combined functions and authority of the two directors couldn't compare with the District Chief, the critical factor was He Kui's role in PLANT and ZAFT.

Seeing He Kui's reputation rising, the Hailan Design Bureau, closely associated with him, naturally rose with the tide.

No matter how the other design bureaus tried to deny it, Hailan was unquestionably leading the unified design bureaus.

And as the District Chief, along with the two directors, he could reach even greater heights, much like He Kui now had his sights set on becoming a District Chief.

Just as He Kui had ambitions for the position of District Chief, he too had ambitions to ascend to the role of a city councilor.

Each city has ten councilors, chosen from twelve accomplished District Chiefs.

The chances were decent.

Of course, that wasn't to say he was entirely secure.

If he ended up being one of the two chiefs left out, it would be quite embarrassing.

There were two years left until the District Chief election—both a short and a long time.

If the war ended and Zala stepped down, his advantage would dissipate.

As it stands, He Kui's neutral stance actually seemed safer.

With these thoughts, the District Chief's smile grew even warmer.

"Thank you, District Chief, and thank you for your support," He Kui responded.

"Haha, Director He is as modest as ever," the District Chief laughed, but then grew serious. "However, I came here today because there are a few things about being a director that I thought I'd mention."

"I'm all ears."

He Kui handed over a cup of tea.

The two of them ended up chatting for quite a while, and eventually, the District Chief went to find Eileen.

Meanwhile, Talia remained behind.

The District Chief didn't ask questions about Talia; he just gave her a nod before leaving.

"How's your friend doing?" Talia asked once the District Chief had left and closed the door.

"The same as before, but there's hope."

"That's good to hear," Talia replied with a gentle smile.

"By the way, Miss Talia, what is your line of work?"

"Currently, nothing official. I used to study command, though."

Talia shook her head, her eyes reflecting memories of her past days of glory.

"Now that your child is older, maybe you could go back to the academy?"

"I think the military academy would welcome you as an instructor."

"Really?"

Talia's gaze softened.

"It wouldn't hurt to try."

"But my husband works with the Zala faction."

Talia seemed to imply more than she explicitly stated.

There were few women in the military academy, naturally leading to all sorts of rumors about nepotism.

"Nobody would need to know," He Kui said lightly.

"...Thank you for the suggestion. I'll think about it."

Talia offered a soft smile.

"It's the least I can do."

After seeing Talia off, He Kui turned back to his office, which was now tidied up and ready.

Since the unified design bureau headquarters would be here, the Hailan Design Bureau would naturally need to expand.

He Kui's office would also be located in the new building.

Under the perpetual PLANT sky, time passed.

He Kui's work on nano-robots continued to progress.

In the Clyne estate in April City, an important guest had also arrived.

"Mentor, you've finally come!" Lacus exclaimed, rushing to assist the scholarly blind man with a sweet smile.

"Lacus, I told you I can manage on my own," Mentor Malchio said, amused.

"I just have so much I want to talk to you about," she said earnestly.

"Is it about the battle outside Orb? Or the recent proposal to extend an olive branch? Or is it that person you mentioned?"

"All of those, yes. I value your perspective, Mentor."

The smile faded from Lacus' face, leaving her with a solemn expression that demanded respect.

"The battle at Orb was practically outside my residence."

"It went much like Zala reported," Malchio said, passing the photos to Lacus's device.

"This was taken at the time," he added.

In the image, the smoking GuAIZ and Duel were visible. After several magnifications, the photo became clearer, revealing a cloaked figure climbing onto Duel.

"So high up?"

"Maybe they had a jetpack."

"But the look of it..."

"Something wrong?"

"No, nothing," Lacus replied, shaking her head, though a suspicion lingered in her heart.

"But if they just jumped into the sea, the odds of survival would be slim; maybe an MS was there to pick them up?"

"There were ZAFT and Orb submarines in that area, but only an MS-sized target could enter without being detected."

"Why were they, or he, even there?"

"As you said, Orb wouldn't get involved in this."

"I can't be sure. Maybe the Super Coordinator was discovered, prompting the Atlantic Federation to deploy their secret unit."

But how had that information leaked?

"Alright. As for the matter of the Super Coordinator..."

"The Super Coordinator has already been sent back to Orb."

"And do you think there might be more than one Super Coordinator?"

Lacus led Malchio to a beautifully tended garden that resonated with birdsong.

"Are you suggesting he might be a Super Coordinator as well?"

"Otherwise, many things just don't add up. Perhaps a researcher-type Super Coordinator?"

"But does it really explain everything if he is?"

Lacus pondered this for a while before shaking her head.

"Lacus, there are many things in this world that defy explanation, just as there's no logical reason for your unusual charm," Malchio said, pointing to the birds chirping happily around her.

This phenomenon defied scientific explanation. If it were just specific species of birds, it could be attributed to some scent she emitted.

But Lacus' charm was universally effective, be it with animals or people.

She was like a princess from a fairy tale, though life wasn't a fairy tale.

In reality, everything has an underlying reason.

"Yes, but if you say so, does that mean He Kui and I are similar in some way?"

"Are you referring to his speech?"

"Yes."

"I'm not sure. And in any case, it doesn't hold much significance right now. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see if he could be a force for peace."

"Thank you for your guidance, Mentor."

"Although He Kui's weaponry is still insufficient to turn the tide, the most pressing issue remains the need for a ceasefire and a shift in public perception on Earth regarding Coordinators."

Lacus's brows knit together.

While she agreed with Malchio's assessment, she sensed that something was still amiss.

He Kui's importance was clear but might not be as significant as it seemed.

While he held a vast ar

ray of technology, much of it focused on weapons and shields, making him a formidable force.

But these technologies were something she could slowly obtain through the Clyne faction.
