Chapter 50
No Idle Persons Allowed
“Hey, Kurresh, what’s that over there?”
On their way back from grocery shopping, Yuuri asked with curiosity. Next to him, carrying their bags (though all the groceries were in a magic bag, so the weight was negligible), Kurresh looked in the direction Yuuri pointed and tilted his head. Kurresh knew what it was, but the situation warranted his head tilt.
“That’s a clinic, but… why is there such a crowd?”
“A clinic? It’s unusually lively for one…”
“Isn’t it?”
Yuuri and Kurresh exchanged puzzled looks, both tilting their heads. To them, a clinic was a place for the sick and injured, a place that could have a calming atmosphere, but the scene in front of them—a bustling crowd—didn’t fit that image. It wasn’t a chaotic situation with serious injuries, either. The crowd was mostly young men.
Intrigued, they headed towards the clinic. The closer they got, the more they realized the crowd was unusual. Everyone seemed very healthy, making it clear these people had no real business at the clinic.
“I thought a clinic was for sick or injured people. Am I wrong?”
“No, that’s right. But what’s with this crowd?”
While Yuuri pondered, Kurresh scanned the surroundings, picking up information. After all, he was trained as a scout with the Scarlet Lynx. His skill at discerning useful information from noisy surroundings was subtle but effective.
With a tired sigh, Kurresh revealed the truth he had discovered. It was an absurdly trivial reason for such excitement.
“Kurresh?”
“Got it. The clinic’s doctor used to be an old man, but he’s moved, and his young female apprentice is taking over.”
“A young woman… Oh, I see, she’s young, pretty, and kind, right?”
“Exactly.”
Yuuri’s guess was confirmed with a nod from Kurresh. The sight of a crowd of seemingly healthy men gathered to see a young, pretty doctor made sense now, though it was very inconvenient.
As Yuuri surveyed the lively clinic surroundings, he noticed a boy and girl with pale faces standing among the energetic men. Unlike the obviously healthy men, the two looked unwell. It was clear they were the ones who truly needed the clinic.
However, the noisy crowd seemed oblivious to this.
“Hey, Kurresh.”
“Yeah?”
“If there’s a commotion with this crowd, would it trouble you?”
“Hmm, with that crowd, huh?”
Yuuri’s usual expression didn’t change as he spoke, making Kurresh ponder, resting a fist on his chin while examining the crowd with narrowed eyes. Despite the casual conversation, Kurresh’s eyes analyzed the situation with a scout’s strategic thinking.
“I’m not great at martial arts like Lelei, and my knives are mainly for disarming traps, not combat.”
“Yeah.”
“And my main weapons are chemicals, which I can’t use in crowded places or around civilians.”
“Yeah.”
“But since we’re near the Adventurers’ Guild, someone could call for help if needed. I think I can manage until then. Not many people are armed.”
“Got it. Thanks.”
With each serious point Kurresh made, Yuuri responded earnestly. Despite the serious conversation, their interaction seemed gentle and peaceful. With a final reassuring smile from Kurresh and a thankful smile from Yuuri, they were ready to act.
Yuuri, seemingly satisfied with Kurresh’s answers, walked toward the crowd. Approaching the pale-faced boy and girl, he addressed the healthy-looking men standing in front of them.
“Excuse me.”
“Huh? What’s up, kid? Wait your turn.”
“Yes, that’s important. But I have a request.”
“What?”
Yuuri smiled while the men looked suspicious. Kurresh stood beside Yuuri, smiling at the boy and girl while keeping an eye on the men.
“If you’re healthy enough not to need the clinic, could you let the seriously ill or injured go ahead?”
The area fell silent.
The crowd went eerily quiet. While Yuuri didn’t mind the stares, the boy and girl behind him were tense. Kurresh comforted them, but they were still scared. Yuuri, still smiling, spoke again.
“See, if healthy people crowd the clinic, it’s hard for those who really need treatment to get help, right?”
“No, no! We’re here for legitimate reasons, and we’re following the rules!”
“But your reason is to talk to the pretty, kind doctor, isn’t it?”
“”……ッ!””
Yuuri bluntly stated what everyone was thinking but couldn’t say. Kurresh chuckled at Yuuri’s boldness. Yuuri, usually easygoing, could be very assertive when it came to his principles. Though this side of him was rare, Kurresh had seen it before.
The men’s gaze, mixed with irritation, turned intense. Kurresh stepped forward protectively, but Yuuri stopped him with a hand, smiling as he continued.
“If you insist, may I categorize everyone? Those needing urgent care and those who can wait.”
“What? You can’t just—”
“I can appraise, so I can.”
“”……!””
The smiling bomb Yuuri threw left everyone speechless. The men, who had been looking down on Yuuri like a mere child, now had strained expressions. They were well aware that their injuries were minor and didn’t require treatment. Yet, they crowded the clinic just to see the beautiful, kind doctor.
And now, they realized that the boy who claimed to have the ability to appraise could see through this charade.
“Hey, Yuuri.”
“What is it, Kurresh?”
“Do you even need me here?”
“Of course, I do.”
Kurresh tilted his head, watching the frozen men in front of him. He had thought he might need to act as a shield, but it seemed unnecessary. Then he remembered: Yuuri had incredibly high luck stats, often getting through situations by sheer luck. Today seemed to be another of those days.
“Next patient… Oh, what’s going on here?”
Emerging from the clinic was a beautiful doctor, the kind that young men would fuss over. She appeared to be around twenty, with twitching rabbit ears marking her as a beastkin. Wearing a small round pair of glasses as a charm point, she gracefully moved her white coat and looked puzzled between the frozen men and smiling Yuuri.
“Who’s the next patient?”
“These two need urgent care. Please see them first.”
“But we have a queue—”
“These gentlemen are kind enough to give up their spots since their injuries are minor. Aren’t they nice?”
“Well, really? Thank you very much.”
As the doctor smiled happily, the men, despite their grumbling, nodded. They wanted to impress her, saying it was no big deal. Yuuri, still smiling, nudged the boy and girl towards the clinic and stuck his tongue out at Kurresh, who shrugged and said,
“Yuuri, you’re scary.”
“Am I?”
“Now they have to keep letting seriously injured people go first.”
“But that’s normal, and it’ll raise the doctor’s opinion of them, right?”
“Yeah, I guess so…”
Kurresh felt a bit sorry for the men who injured themselves just to talk to the doctor. Just a bit, because he saw seriously injured or sick people being obstructed by them. A clinic should prioritize those who really need care.
While Kurresh was lost in thought, Yuuri was already taking action.
“Ma’am, please come to the front. Don’t push yourself. Sir, could you give up your spot? Ma’am, don’t hesitate to come forward. It’s not good to endure unnecessarily.”
“Yuuri, why are you organizing the line on your own?”
“Kurresh, wait a moment. We’ll leave after this.”
“Okay. Can I help with anything?”
“Can you tell the people at the back that we’re organizing the queue?”
“Got it.”
Kurresh waved and walked away, while Yuuri continued to organize the line with a smile. Using his [God’s Eye], he identified the seriously injured or ill without needing detailed appraisals; they appeared red to him. His cheat ability proved as handy as ever.
Yuuri’s efforts bore fruit, as the number of unnecessary visitors to the clinic significantly decreased from the next day onwards.
