Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Difference Between Theory and Practical Experience
Chapter 17: The Difference Between Theory and Practical Experience
An hour passed, and Shinomiya Kaguya still hadn't touched the wall clock to trigger the time reversal.
There was no way to know what had happened over there.
Although the waiting was almost torturous, there were still no results. The room remained the same, silent, with no sound at all.
It was now night, and neither Takahashi Takakai nor Shijo Maki dared to go outside to explore. So, after exchanging their observations, the two simply sat against the wall, about a meter apart, silently waiting for the moment when the time reversal would finally happen, though they had no idea when that might be.
One minute, two minutes...
They turned off the only lamp in the room, leaving the space in complete silence, both of them sitting still like that.
The room had been thoroughly checked earlier, and the result was that, whether the living room or the kitchen, nothing unusual was found, like a dead body. However, the room still had a ruleboard and a supply box, so the two had eaten a few crackers to temporarily ease their hunger.
When Takakai tried to open the living room door to check the hallway, he found that the door seemed to be locked from the outside and couldn't be opened. So, they could only stay inside the room.
Dark.
Silent.
In this waiting silence, Takakai could feel his body almost always tense, as if all the nerves in his body were about to snap at any moment.
Even so, he didn't dare to turn on the light, speak, or close his eyes to rest. He simply sat still in place.
The ruleboard was outdated, unable to properly deal with the current situation. It specifically emphasized the danger at night. After 9 p.m., no lights should be turned on in the room, no talking, no sound at all—basically, complete silence was required, making the room seem like a deserted house with no one inside.
When Takahashi realized the abnormalities in the Shirakawa building, noticing that its initial stable state had been affected by an external force, he was sure that the safe places mentioned in the ruleboard were now problematic. On the other hand, the dangerous places mentioned in the ruleboard were still just as dangerous, if not more so, than they were initially.
Therefore, now, both Shijo Maki and Takahashi Takakai could only sit in silence, waiting, waiting for Shinomiya Kaguya's time reversal, or… waiting for a new day to come, waiting for an uncertain morning.
Perhaps tonight, they wouldn't make it to morning?
Takakai couldn't help but think to himself.
There were a number of things that could be summarized so far, such as when Takakai realized the strange blood letters that Shijo Maki had seen in the records. Takakai could confirm that in the Shirakawa apartment, for the Horror story rule and those bizarre creatures to function, the most important means was [information exchange].
This exchange could be through visual, auditory, cognitive, or other sensory interactions. For example, the three strange creatures knocking on the door was an interaction through hearing, and their senses almost destroyed them, while the interaction Shijo Maki encountered was through written text.
Compared to direct sensory interaction, the secondary method of interaction through text, though not as powerful, still had the effect of producing unusual phenomena. This is why Shijo Maki wasn't immediately destroyed and had kept her consciousness, even though, considering that she had dragged Takakai into this unknown place, it was unclear how long they could survive.
However, if textual exchange could produce such effects, then Xu Sheng, who had been recorded by the previous survivors as dead, should have become a monster alongside "Mr. Refrigerator" and "Mr. Under the Bed." Yet, he had left many ruleboards and supply boxes, and even found a way to alter the structure of every room in the Shirakawa building. They must have interacted with Xu Sheng many times, so why hadn't he shown up to harm them?
Could it be that the man didn't die? Could he still have his will intact? So, he decided not to harm others?
Or perhaps he made some arrangements before his death, ensuring that even after he passed away, he wouldn't cause harm to others?
Speaking of which, did Xu Sheng make some modifications to that wall clock? After turning the clock's hands earlier, Takakai now had the ability to see others turning the clock even from a great distance. He could even see the messages Xu Sheng left behind before he died.
So, in this completely out-of-control Shirakawa apartment, had the powerful man from before, the one who organized all the survivors with nothing but his own strength, really disappeared? Was he incapable of doing anything anymore?
Takakai thought of many things.
But the more he thought, the more he couldn't help but sigh hopelessly, and then stopped his wandering thoughts.
Right now, he was stuck in this place.
If he couldn't survive, all the clues he'd gathered would become meaningless.
How weak he was.
The feeling of only being able to be cautious, struggling to survive, was truly awful.
Why couldn't I be the Overpowered Main Character instead?
Lost in these thoughts, Takakai heard a very faint sound from beside him.
It was the sound coming from Shijo Maki.
What was she doing?
Takakai immediately became alert, but then he thought, if Shijo Maki had turned into something terrifying, in this small room with nowhere to hide, what could he do? So, he just sat still, not moving, letting the other act as she pleased.
Then, he heard Shijo Maki quietly move beside him and sit down, not even three centimeters away. Their shoulders and arms occasionally brushed against each other.
A delicate finger lightly touched the back of Takakai's hand and began to write words.
[In this dim environment, sitting too far apart makes it hard to notice any abnormalities. You must be quite panicked, right? Don't worry, I, Shijo Maki, can protect you. With me here, there will be no problem.]
He understood now. Shijo Maki was afraid to be alone in this dark, silent environment, so she came to him. And since the rule was to remain silent at night, she was communicating by writing on his hand.
Knowing the personality of the character from the original story really was a huge advantage. If it were someone else who didn't understand Shijo Maki's subtle hints, they might find her quite annoying.
Thinking this, Takakai suddenly felt an urge to tease her. He took her small hand and gently touched the back of her hand with his finger.
Soft, warm. It was the hand of a realife young girl with very well-kept skin.
He could feel her slight trembling, perhaps his action had startled her, making the shy girl even more tense.
Thinking back, this might be the first time I've ever touched a girl's hand?
It felt strange. Suddenly, I want to be Kira Yoshikage...
As Takakai continued to write on Shijo Maki's hand with his finger, he added:
[According to the logic of horror movies, you'll discover in a moment that I only have one hand left. You're interacting with a hand that has no body.]
After writing this, Takakai felt Shijo Maki's hand stiffen abruptly, even trembling slightly.
It wasn't until a few minutes later that he heard her take a deep breath. Then, she quickly placed her hand back on his, and her finger wrote at lightning speed:
[This joke isn't funny at all. You should really work on your EQ, Baka!!!]
Finally, three exclamation marks were firmly written on Takakai's hand, as if trying to slice his hand, showing just how angry Shijo Maki was.
[Sorry, I was just worried that you'd only have one hand. I'm a bit scared right now.]
Takakai almost laughed, but he kept writing on her hand:
[Hmpn, either way, you're just an ordinary person from a common background. It's natural to be scared in a situation like this.]
Though he couldn't see her expression, Takakai could imagine Maki looking up with a proud face.
Oujou-sama, even now, after all this, you're still trying to maintain that haughty demeanor? Aren't you tired?
As Takakai thought this, Shijo Maki continued writing:
[Don't worry, I'll protect you really well. After all, I'm the new genius of the Shijo family. I won't back down from this "Horror story rules" nonsense or whatever.]
[Also, I can tell you're pretty capable. Though you're not the sharpest normally, in a critical situation, your reactions are quick. Maybe you're a man with great potential, just like me and my Oba-sama. Of course, that's provided you do some practice. Right now, you're not strong enough yet.]
[Anyway, don't be scared. Even though I'm a girl, I'm not afraid. If you're weaker than me, I won't accept it. Oh, and of course, if you're really scared... I suppose I could give you a hug. I... I'll make an exception for you.]
After finishing that last sentence, she gently patted the back of Takakai's hand and placed her hand on top of his.
Her hand was much smaller than his, giving off a soft and warm sensation, and her fingers gently slipped between his, providing a sense of warmth and excitement in the dark.
Takakai didn't say anything and remained still.
To be honest, it felt a little embarrassing. Facing the gentle gesture of a beautiful girl, even though he couldn't see her face in the dark, Takakai's heart began to race. He couldn't help but want to fidget, scratch his face, or adjust his hair, but his body was stiff, unable to move.
Although he had watched over 69TB of "high-quality resources," and was recognized by his friends as an "expert" in the "art" world, now, confronted with the tenderness of a real girl, he felt embarrassed?
Takakai thought to himself while sitting rigidly.
Actually, even if Shijo Maki had really turned into a monster and was trying to lower his guard, Takakai thought, it wouldn't matter. The door wasn't opening, and he couldn't escape anyway. Maybe before he died, he should at least enjoy a bit of this.
But these chaotic thoughts were quickly interrupted by another noise.
Cop—cop—
Footsteps.
Outside in the hallway, the sound of footsteps echoed, seemingly just beyond the wall.
Someone's coming?!
In surprise, Takakai immediately sat up, then heard more footsteps, mixed together—clearly, it wasn't just one person.
Knock-knock—
The sound of knocking came.
It reminded Takakai of the strange "knocking incident" he had encountered a few hours earlier. The knock was just as calm.
And along with the knocking, a calm voice rang out.
"Takahashi-san, Shijo-san, are you in there? We've come to rescue you."
It was the voice of Shinomiya Kaguya.
