Chapter 5
Chapter 5. The Mysterious Being
In a certain room, a woman—Futaba Haruka—folded her arms, furrowing her brows in deep thought. She was an emergency responder during the recent monster appearance and possessed a skill level above the threshold.
“What’s on your mind, senpai? You look really deep in thought.”
The man who spoke to her—Kato—was her junior and had been working alongside her during the recent monster incident.
“It’s just… I was wondering who defeated that B-rank monster…”
“Oh, yeah, I was thinking about that too. There were already D-rank monsters in that area, so the task force was busy with them. It’s a real mystery.”
Indeed, no one in that area could handle a B-rank monster. Under normal circumstances, the task force should have been wiped out. However, the Ravana was defeated before engaging with the task force.
They questioned the task force, who reported that they heard Ravana’s roar but were preoccupied with the D-rank threats, fighting with a faint sense of dread, wondering when it would come for them. Then, after Ravana’s massive beam pierced the sky, everything suddenly fell silent.
Haruka recalled Ravana’s corpse.
The monster’s tough body, which shouldn’t have been damaged by ordinary attacks, had a massive hole torn through it. It was clear from the cut that it was likely inflicted in a single blow.
Just how many people with that kind of power exist? The kind of people who protect various towns, like the task force, wouldn’t be able to manage it. It must have been someone higher up—maybe someone from a large organization that can contend with nations, like the special ability task force.
But…
“Kato, what did you think of that boy at the scene?”
“Boy? Oh, the kid clinging to his dog, right? Hmm, well, I didn’t notice anything strange about him. Though I was surprised by his power level reading ‘0’—I’d never seen that before.”
“Yes, but what’s odd is that a boy his age managed to stay so calm when facing a monster.”
“…True. When I first saw those creatures, I was paralyzed with fear and couldn’t move a step.”
It’s nothing short of abnormal. Facing a terrifying monster, how could he stay so calm and answer our questions with such clarity? Typically, he should have been screaming, or in shock, utterly silent. Especially for someone with a ‘0’ level, a person with no powers whatsoever.
“Are you suggesting that you think he defeated the B-rank monster?”
“I wouldn’t go that far. But given how strange he seems, I can’t completely rule out a connection.”
“But he’s powerless, isn’t he?”
“Yes, that’s true. But do you remember the Minotaur incident?”
“The one where we couldn’t identify who defeated it? You think it’s related?”
Just recently, an unknown person took down a D-rank Minotaur. And with a single strike, no less. It might be premature to link these incidents, but the circumstances are eerily similar. Plus…
“The spot where that Minotaur was defeated was right by his house.”
“Just a coincidence, isn’t it?”
“Maybe… but…”
If it’s not a coincidence…
“He might get pulled into something troublesome…”
The mere thought of a ‘0’ level person with overwhelming power being discovered would cause immense upheaval. If he were acknowledged, the world’s current rules—the idea that those with high levels dominate and those with low levels are simply weeded out—would collapse in an instant.
Sigh.
With a sigh, Haruka quietly wished that the boy wouldn’t get caught up in anything serious.
