Chapter 9:
Chapter 9: Humble Love 9:
Listening to Zhang Ya’s threatening words over the phone, Chen Nuo’s face remained calm, though a cold glint flashed in his eyes.
He truly couldn’t understand how Zhang Ya could say such things.
She had suffered greatly being with him?
Nonsense!
If it hadn’t been for the previous Chen Nuo, Zhang Ya wouldn’t have even been able to afford her tuition fees during her four years of university. She would have been eating the cheapest steamed buns and drinking plain water from the cafeteria, not living the comfortable life she had.
Luxury clothes, expensive jewelry, lavish meals—
Many of her classmates thought she came from a wealthy family.
But the truth?
If it weren’t for the previous Chen Nuo, Zhang Ya wouldn’t have even graduated.
If it weren’t for him, she wouldn’t have entered a reputable trading company in the provincial capital, nor risen to a high-ranking position within a few short years.
She was talking about suffering?
“Chen Nuo, I’m asking you one last time—will you fire those people or not?”
“If you won’t, don’t even think about marrying me!”
Zhang Ya’s voice was filled with smug superiority as she issued her ultimatum from the stairwell.
She was certain Chen Nuo would comply.
“What makes you so confident? Why do you think I even want to marry you?”
Chen Nuo asked, his tone cold.
The words left Zhang Ya stunned. She had been waiting for him to cave.
A moment later, rage flared up within her.
“Chen Nuo, what do you mean…”
“Do you have any idea what your life would have been like without me?”
Chen Nuo cut her off.
“You would have spent your four years at university enduring the judgmental stares of your classmates because you couldn’t even afford tuition. You would have survived on steamed buns, unable to afford even the cheapest cafeteria meal.”
“You would have worn patched-up clothes throughout your university years.”
“You wouldn’t have graduated.”
“You would have slunk back to your hometown in shame.”
“You would have been sold off by your parents, who favor sons over daughters, to an old man as a breeding machine.”
“You would have lived a miserable life.”
“Instead, you got to wear luxury clothes, adorn yourself with expensive jewelry, dine out, and fool everyone into thinking you were some privileged princess.”
“But the truth? You’re just a beggar who stumbled into a comfortable life by clinging to me.”
“…”
Chen Nuo’s words were calm, but each one struck Zhang Ya like a needle, piercing deeply into her heart.
“Shut up, Chen Nuo!”
Zhang Ya’s face twisted in anger as waves of humiliation washed over her.
“Why should I? You know it’s true.”
Chen Nuo’s voice remained steady.
The previous Chen Nuo had never said such things to Zhang Ya.
He had always tried to protect her dignity.
But in the end, all he got was a ruthless betrayal.
Chen Nuo wasn’t the same. He intended to tear down her false sense of superiority.
“Consider this my official notification: we’re breaking up.”
“Don’t contact me again. I’m a privileged young man from a big city. We’re not from the same world.”
Click.
Chen Nuo ended the call.
“Mom, Dad, what do you think?”
Putting his phone away, he looked at his parents.
“Good job, son! That’s my boy!”
His mother’s eyes glistened with tears, but she raised her thumb in approval.
“Of course. Whose son do you think I am?”
Chen Nuo smiled, pushing Zhang Ya out of his thoughts.
As long as he refused to support her, she would ruin herself.
…
“Beep… beep… beep…”
It took several minutes after Chen Nuo hung up for Zhang Ya to snap out of her humiliation and disbelief.
Break up?
The man she had always looked down on, Chen Nuo, wanted to break up with her?
Humiliation, rage, and frustration churned within her. Without thinking, she tried to call him back.
But the next second, she hesitated.
She suddenly felt afraid.
The words Chen Nuo had spoken had pierced her deeply.
“Break up with me? Fine, I’ll see how long you can keep this up!”
Zhang Ya put down her phone, her expression dark.
She didn’t believe for a moment that Chen Nuo truly wanted to end things.
She was certain he would come crawling back, begging for forgiveness.
He had always done so in the past.
She knew exactly how desperate he had been to marry her.
But this time, she wasn’t going to let it slide.
How dare he speak to her like that?
“Just because you come from a better-off family, you think you can talk down to me?”
With a dark expression, Zhang Ya vowed that when Chen Nuo came back to her, she would crush him emotionally.
Yet, for some reason, her heart pounded with anxiety—a deep, unsettling fear she couldn’t shake.
Pushing those thoughts aside, she returned to the office.
“All these documents need to be finished by the end of the day. You’re not leaving until they’re done.”
Li Jun, the supervisor, dropped a thick stack of files on her desk as she walked in, his tone icy.
“Anyone who wants to can do it. I’m definitely not doing it!”
Zhang Ya shot a glare at the towering stack of papers, her face stormy. She stood up and walked out of the office.
She wasn’t planning to return for a few days.
Once Chen Nuo begged her to take him back, she would return.
And when she did, Li Jun would be out of the company, along with everyone who had mocked her.
Clenching her fists, Zhang Ya vowed revenge.
