Chapter 12: Chapter 10.1: The "Romantic" Gift
"Hey, hey, Kaito-kun!" Yumi's cheerful voice broke the quiet as she bumped her shoulder against mine. Her pouty face was so cute, I couldn't help but smile.
"What is it, Yumi?" I asked, glancing at her.
She stopped walking, puffing out her cheeks dramatically. "Close your eyes!"
I blinked, confused. "Why? What are you—"
"Just close your eyes!" she huffed, crossing her arms, her face tinged with a slight blush.
"Alright, alright," I said, scratching the back of my head nervously. Slowly, I shut my eyes.
For a moment, there was silence, just the sound of the wind. Then I felt her breath, warm and soft, tickling my face. Her scent, sweet and familiar, filled the air between us.
Wait, wait, wait! Is she going to kiss me? My heart pounded. This was it. *Yattaaa!*
"Here, Kaito-kun," she whispered, her voice soft as a feather.
"Huh?" My blissful thoughts shattered when something heavy and cold suddenly dropped into my hands.
My eyes flew open, and I nearly threw the object in panic. "A-AHHHH!"
It was a sword. No, not just any sword—it was made out of *human remains*. Bone, teeth, and two mismatched eyeballs embedded in the hilt stared back at me. The craftsmanship was disturbingly detailed.
I instinctively moved to toss it away, but Yumi caught it mid-air with both hands. "Kaito-kun!" she cried out, pouting and holding it out toward me again. "Be careful! Don't throw it away. I worked so hard on this!"
I hesitated, reluctantly taking it back. "What... what is this thing?"
"It's a katana, silly!" she said with a teasing grin. "Do you like it, Kaito-kun?"
"LIKE IT?!" I stammered, my voice a mix of horror and awkward laughter. "Yumi, this is terrifying! You made this?!"
She clasped her hands behind her back, her eyes sparkling with pride. "Of course! I carved the blade myself and added the eyes and teeth for... you know, aesthetics and cuteness!"
"Aesthetic?! Cuteness?!" I repeated, staring at the grotesque blade in disbelief.
She leaned closer, her tone playful and teasing. "Isn't it cute, Kaito-kun?"
I forced a nervous laugh, trying to suppress my rising discomfort. "Uh, sure, Yumi. Th-thank you.I-It's It's... unique."
Her pout melted into a radiant smile. "Yay~! I knew you'd like it, Kaito-kun! You're the best!"
She spun on her heel, waving cheerfully. "Bye-bye, Kaito-kun! See you tomorrow!"
I watched her skip away, still clutching the bizarre sword in my trembling hands. "Y-yeah... bye, Yumi," I muttered.
Later, sitting in my room, I set the sword down on the table, finally taking a good look at it. The mismatched eyeballs seemed to stare back at me, looking confused.
For a moment, I could swear it looked... cute.
I sighed, rubbing my forehead. "What am I even thinking?"
The sword continued to stare, unblinking. I stared back.
"...Yeah, this is going to be a terrifying night."
"Why Yumiii!"
