Chapter 13
However, on the way, Alma suddenly noticed an unfamiliar sight in the scenery beside her. It happened just as the carriage entered the principality’s capital city.
“Are there people lined up? The people lined up are wearing very shabby clothes…”
It may be rude to say so, but the people in line were all in dirty clothes, and hadn’t even bothered to mend their torn garments.
“Yes, that’s…”
My father answered my question.
“There’s a church up ahead where those people are lined up. They distribute food to the poor there every day. So that’s probably the line.”
It seems that when you first enter the capital city, you’re in the poor district. As you get closer to the castle, the wealthier people have their homes there. It seems that in any country, cities are structured like that.
“I wonder if there’s anything I can do for them…”
I touched the most expensive thing I owned—a hair ornament my parents gave me on my coming-of-age birthday when I turned 18.
“Think carefully about how long you can help and how many people you can save. There is nothing more cruel than temporary relief.”
Father scolded me harshly, which was unusual for him.
“It’s no good unless you continue to reach out to them, like the people at that church.”
Having been advised, I returned my hand, which had been touching the hair accessory, to its original position, as if to embrace Elmer, who had his hands on his lap.
“…There’s nothing I can do right now.”
“That’s up to you from now on.”
When I looked up at his words, Father was smiling at me.
“If you want to do something about this scene, you must first burn this image into your mind. Then, when you become someone, you can provide true salvation.”
“Can a woman do it?”
“There’s no need to restrict yourself just because you’re a woman. Use that excellent mind of yours and think about it from now on.”
“……I agree.”
This conversation was followed by silence. As if to break the mood, a cheerful, childish voice echoed through the carriage.
“Hey, hey, big sister! The castle is getting closer!”
Alma pointed in the direction her eyes lit up, and between the buildings, we could see a white castle nearby.
“You live in a good location, quite close to the center of the capital, don’t you?”
This carriage was heading to our new home. If so, it must be near the royal palace, in a place where high-ranking nobles live. That’s what I could guess.
“According to the other party, the only good properties were in places like that. Well, I’ve been hired as a civil servant, so it will be easier and more convenient if I can commute from a place closer to the castle. Oh, by the way. I’m supposed to be granted the title of baron here, so keep that in mind.”
In stark contrast to his previous response, Father now answered with a calm expression and tone.
“I believe our residence is close to the Shogun’s? I’m looking forward to meeting your wife, with whom I’ve only ever exchanged letters. I’d love to have a tea party.”
Mom asked Dad with a happy look on her face. “I want to have a tea party with my friends,” she said with a carefree look, but in contrast to that, Mom was very cunning when it came to socializing.
Born into the status of a duke, she was a true aristocrat. She was also skilled at speaking, never boring her guests. Furthermore, she naturally acquired the manners of her position. Her network of female friends often helped my father with his work.
I’m sure that even if we end up living in a new place, Mother will eventually use her strength for Father’s sake.
“General… I have a friend from university, his name is Reinard Bladenburg, but he has no children. His wife, Lady Theresa, was very keen to meet not only Emilia, but also my children.”
“Well, then, if you’re going to invite me to tea, I think it’d be best to have the children join us.”
Looking at my mother, who looked like she was having fun, I wondered. If she and my father were in the same year at university, they must have been close in age. If you are that old and you are not blessed with an heir, it is normal to take in a new wife. But no such person came up in my father’s story.
“Father, why doesn’t Lord Bladenburg take a second wife, even though he hasn’t been blessed with any children?”
I knew it might be rude to stick my nose into another family’s affairs, but at the time my curiosity got the better of me.
“Reinald is a man who loves his wife. Even though they came together because of an agreement between their families, he is now completely devoted to her. That’s why he has no intention of taking a second wife, even though they don’t have children. He said that if push comes to shove, he can adopt a male relative and have him take over the family.”
“He’s a man who cares about his wife.”
“Oh, I see.”
That story alone made me like Sir Reinard.
“That’s wonderful! I’d love to hear more about that. After all, love stories are a must-have with delicious tea and sweets.”
It seemed that Mother had become even more interested in the couple’s personalities. She began to imagine all sorts of things, such as where to get the tea leaves from and what sweets to serve with the tea.
“We want to eat some sweets too.”
“Me too.”
“Well then, let’s start by practicing greetings in their language, Delaslande.”
“Yes!”
The three adults, including Anneliese, have no problem with the Delaslande language.
And so, during the long journey, a Delaslande language class for young children was held inside the carriage.
