Chapter 12
One day, I received an invitation to a party hosted by the royal family, so my parents and I attended. I was about eight years old.
Perhaps because I am the Prime Minister’s daughter, I was given the honor of greeting Her Majesty the Queen in person. It was my first time meeting Her Majesty.
I curtsied, as is customary, and politely greeted Her Majesty the Queen.
“I am Anneliese, Balthazar Baden’s eldest daughter.”
“I see. I had heard rumors that the Prime Minister’s daughter was intelligent, but I never imagined she would curtsey so gracefully.”
Her Majesty smiled with satisfaction behind her fan but didn’t include me in the conversation further; she just wanted to make sure we were on point.
“Hey, Anneliese.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“Do you know the meaning of today’s party?”
“Yes. The princess and her family from the Principality of Delasland are here, so it is for social reasons.”
“I am listening.”
Her Majesty’s question was in Delaslande, so I replied in that language too.
“This is amazing, Balthazar! At this age, your daughter has a command of Delaslande as an adult!”
“Wh-what…”
Father knew that I was intelligent, but it was the first time he’d heard that I could speak another language fluently, and he was flustered.
I would take books from my father’s room and devour them, especially those on history and languages. I even memorized the names and family crests of neighboring countries, including my own.
To help me learn pronunciation, which is difficult to master alone, Father provided a private tutor. The tutor was dedicated to teaching the eager student.
Perhaps that’s why I was able to answer Her Majesty the Queen’s questions without any difficulty.
Her Majesty was pleased and praised me highly. The tutor was also an aristocrat. Rumors among the aristocrats must have eventually reached the Queen’s ears.
Is that why?
“That’s perfect. None of my children can speak Delaslande. The Prince of Delaslande seemed bored and had nothing to do, and it was bothering me. Hey, Anneliese, you are the treasure of our country, the Blue Jewels of Baden. Could you please talk to the Prince?”
“……you know……”
At that moment, I looked up at my father, wondering what to do. Her Majesty’s orders are absolute. But was it really okay to accept such an important role as hostess to a prince from another country? I thought that if I were rude, it could become an international issue.
“Well, would you like to work for me?”
Her Majesty pressed on.
Father nodded as if to say, “Do so.” He had a bitter look on his face. Perhaps he had decided that he had no choice but to accept the risk since it was an order from Her Majesty the Queen.
And so, even though I was only eight years old, I found myself serving as a conversation partner for His Highness the Prince.
The Prince was older than me and a very witty boy. As his companion, I soon found myself enjoying parties with him.
“That’s right! In the center of the castle gardens, there is a bright red rose garden. It is named after the Red Queen. How about we go and see it?”
“Great. That’s great. Let’s go.”
It brings back fond memories.
Later, I heard through the grapevine that His Imperial Highness had lost his father at an early age and had become Prince at a young age.
As I was suddenly remembering this, I saw an island in the middle of a large lake from the carriage window, and a magnificent castle towering over the center of the island.
That is the Principality of Delasland, ruled by the boy from back then.
“Wow, beautiful!”
The lake sparkled in the sunlight, and the castle was illuminated by the light. I was amazed by the sight. I had heard that the territory of the Principality of Delasland was only the land floating on the lake, so it could be called a small country.
“Oneetama, what is it?”
“What do you mean, beautiful?”
The twins, who had been deep asleep, suddenly woke up, rubbing their eyes.
I had Elmer sit on my lap so we could see the view from the window, and Dad had Alma sit on his lap.
Ugh. Their skin feels so smooth and soft.
I wonder if these are the children they call angels. So cute!
She regrets all the days stolen from her during her education as a princess, never having been able to see such adorable children up close.
The twins, unaware of my feelings, finally clung to the window frame, where their heights were equal, and stared at the view outside.
“Wow! The water is sparkling! It looks just like a jewel.”
My younger sister Alma’s eyes lit up.
“Wow, the castle has a tall tower! It’s a magnificent castle!”
My younger brother Elmer seemed fascinated by the castle’s white exterior.
Although the twins look identical, perhaps due to their different genders, they seem to be attracted to different things.
Their mother watched over the two of them with a smile on her face.
And so, the beautiful scenery outside the train window was shared by the young twins until we arrived a
t our destination. I enjoyed the sliver of scenery I could see through the gap between their backs.
