Chapter 7
Unlike Balthazar, who was essentially disowned by his family, Reinard received minimal financial support from his parents while attending university.
Therefore, each time he passed an exam with Balthazar’s help, Reinard insisted on expressing his gratitude by bowing to him.
“Your efforts were the key to your success, Reinard. Well done.”
“No, it was all thanks to you. Please, accept my thanks without reservation.”
Reinard’s face lit up with joy, refusing to relent even if Balthazar declined. This was a familiar exchange between them.
“Right… Thank you, by the way… If you could acquire the book our tactics teacher recommended before, I’d appreciate it.”
“What’s the title?”
Balthazar and Alexandra exchanged surprised glances.
“…This is it.”
They jotted down the book’s title and author in their notes.
“If you purchase it, I’d like to study it together with you. It may not be immediately relevant, but it’s worth learning.”
Upon hearing this request, Reinard enthusiastically embraced Balthazar once more.
Meanwhile, Princess Alexandra observed the interaction from a distance.
Hmm. Reinard not only benefits from the knowledge himself but also has the capacity to pass it on. Moreover, with that particular book, he could prove even more valuable…
Her gaze then shifted to Balthazar.
──I want him.
Not romantically, of course. A man from a noble family unable to support even his third son wasn’t suitable as Alexandra’s partner.
What she desired was his service, his loyalty.
Incidentally, Alexandra had two older siblings during her university years.
As male heirs took precedence, her prospects of ascending to the throne were slim with two elder brothers.
──But those brothers were dreadfully dull.
In short, they were unworthy of the throne. Both were indulgent and squandered their time in frivolous pursuits. They seemed destined for a life of debauchery, and their future reign would likely lead to the kingdom’s decline.
──I, on the other hand, am much more fitting to rule.
The qualities required of a monarch:
Do they possess ample knowledge, wisdom, and tact to navigate complex situations? Do they exude charisma capable of captivating the people? Can they match or surpass the royal families of other nations in demeanor and conduct?
──And when necessary, are they willing to demonstrate ruthless resolve even towards their own kin?
That’s what Alexandra believed.
During her university years, she quietly eliminated obstacles using her parents’ connections and occasionally resorting to more clandestine methods. Rumor had it that Anneliese’s maternal grandparents were among her victims.
One brother met his end via a lethal, tasteless poison slipped into his drink during a night of revelry with a high-class courtesan.
The other brother, wary of this fate, fell victim to an orchestrated carriage accident while out with his wife, staged to appear as a tragic mishap.
The king, their father, who subscribed to the notion of “the strong shall rule,” was amused by Alexandra’s cunning.
“He’s worthy of being my successor.”
Even aware that her scheming could one day be directed at him, the king expressed satisfaction. How could they reform this corrupt kingdom? Alexandra’s only regret was not witnessing the transformation herself.
By the time of her graduation, Princess Alexandra had become the kingdom’s heiress.
“Balthazar. Though it’s been a short while since I became princess, I aim to transform our royal court from one shackled by archaic noble customs to one that values merit above all. ──Will you stand by my side as my right hand?”
On graduation day, Princess Alexandra extended an offer to Balthazar.
“I admire you, Balthazar. Not in a romantic sense, but as the most capable individual to serve as my right hand. You possess the skills necessary for the role… So, will you join me?”
With that, she reached out her hand.
“I’ll provide you with experiences rarely afforded elsewhere.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Balthazar took her hand.
The prospect of a new kingdom, where meritocracy reigned supreme, appealed to him, despite his revulsion at the blood-soaked throne. Perhaps it was youthful idealism, or perhaps it was practicality.
Returning to his parents’ home would only render him a nuisance due to his status as the third son.
Alexandra’s proposition offered both convenience and opportunity for Balthazar.
Shortly after Alexandra ascended to the throne following her father’s mysterious demise, she appointed Balthazar as her prime minister, recognizing his talents and dedication.
Together, they purged corrupt nobles who had enriched themselves under the previous regime and replaced them with individuals of integrity, regardless of their social standing.
At a young age, Queen Alexandra initiated these reforms, with Balthazar serving as her trusted advisor and prime minister.
