Chapter 52 - Snake’s Worries I
The heavenly tribulation was coming.
The first thing Xuan Ming did to prepare for the heavenly tribulation was to store lots and lots of food for his spouse.
He had to prepare for the worst, and naturally had to make the most complete preparations.
Xuan Ming expanded the cellar to 20 meters deep and divided it into two floors. Thousand-year-old ice was placed on the bottom layer for freezing, and the cold air from the bottom layer penetrated into the top layer, which was suitable as refrigeration. The usable area was considerable huge.
The stairs in the cellar were also carefully polished by Xuan Ming with his tail. To avoid Wan Zhong being hurt by the cold air, he put a thick layer of black soil on the ground in the snake nest. He originally wanted to place a luminous pearl in the cellar to illuminate it, but all the treasures in the cave had been stolen by his useless brother, so he had to forget about that plan.
After Xuan Ming made the cellar for the Wan Zhong, he also opened up the inner space on the upper floor of the snake nest and used it all to store the wood he had chopped for Wan Zhong.
In order to make a nest for his cubs, he also dug out the entire cave into briquettes, and the winding roads were like a maze.
Xuan Ming took Wan Zhong with him and walked every road. He used red cinnabar to draw details on the black snake skin, and marked the locations of several darkrooms for him, giving him detailed instructions.
“After I overcome the tribulation, all the restrictions on this island will be lifted, and then this place will not be peaceful. I will tell the mirror in advance, if you are in danger let it send you home as soon as possible. Don’t delay, just leave right away. If other demons and cultivators come to you, don’t be afraid. Give them my snake skin and scales. You are an ordinary person and they won’t make it too difficult for you.”
Xuan Ming divided the snake skin and scales into different sizes. Dozens of copies were placed in different places.
After Wan Zhong remembered them one by one, Xuan Ming gently raised his finger to draw a talisman in the air and patted it on Wan Zhong’s forehead.
Wan Zhong suddenly felt clear and refreshed like in the mourning hall, as if he had eaten mint leaves.
He asked strangely: “What is this?”
Xuan Ming shook his head: “I don’t know but it will be useful.”
Wan Zhong: “What will happen to you if you fail?”
Xuan Ming still shook his head: “I don’t know.”
Wan Zhong: “The worst outcome?”
Xuan Ming: “When the body dies, the soul will disappear.”
Wan Zhong asked this question once before, but he didn’t expect that the answer would be the same both times.
Wan Zhong didn’t know what he was expecting. Deep down in his heart, he hoped for Xuan Ming to say confidently, “It’s just a tribulation. It’s just a trivial matter to me. Don’t worry. You’re just thinking too much,” instead of the uncertain “I don’t know” that left him feeling uneasy. It made him anxious to hear it.
What was even more frustrating was that Xuan Ming didn’t seem nervous at all.
From his words and actions, it seemed he didn’t worry about the outcome of the tribulation. He appeared as if he could get through it with a bit of ease, and if he couldn’t, he would simply die and start anew. There was no sense of farewell whatsoever.
Wan Zhong felt a little displeased.
He hadn’t been able to eat or sleep well these days due to Xuan Ming’s tribulation. His worry caused his gray hair to grow out. But the snake was behaving like everything was fine, and he didn’t mention anything about how to contact him after sending him home.
And even if they took ten thousand steps back, even if he truly died, as the old saying went, the partner should be mourning for a hundred days. So why did Xuan Ming believe the tribulation would be so cruel to not even leaving bones?
.
As Xuan Ming explained the funeral arrangements, he noticed his spouse drifting off again. He raised his hand and gave him a light tap on the head, raising his eyebrows. “I’m discussing business with you. What are you thinking about?”
“Hiss~” Wan Zhong gasped, feeling a rush of cold air. He was about to question why Xuan Ming was being so harsh. Who would treat the person they love so coldly? Suddenly, a muffled thunder sounded outside, and the ground beneath them shook violently.
“Ah~”
Wan Zhong instinctively moved to protect Xuan Ming, who was being chased by lightning, but Xuan Ming was quicker. He reached out and pulled him into his arms, pressing his head against his chest and holding him tightly.
Wan Zhong: “…”
He felt something shift within him.
With just that simple gesture from Xuan Ming, all the turmoil in his heart vanished.
As the ground continued to tremble and thunder roared overhead, Wan Zhong remained held tightly in Xuan Ming’s embrace. If he looked up slightly, he could see Xuan Ming’s Adam’s apple and his graceful, smooth jawline. Further up, there were his slightly pursed thin lips and his tall nose bridge.
Even after the thunder subsided and Xuan Ming didn’t release him, Wan Zhong still saw the faint furrow in Xuan Ming’s brows and the lingering worry in his eyes.
What was he thinking? What was he worried about?
He couldn’t fathom Xuan Ming’s thoughts.
He wanted to ask Xuan Ming how they would stay in touch if they were separated. Would they ever meet again? But seeing that Xuan Ming didn’t seem saddened by the prospect of parting, Wan Zhong bit his lip and refrained from being sentimental.
