Chapter 397: CHAPTER 397 - The Fallen Angel
Amidst the colossal disintegration energy beam, Li Lin, who had been hovering in the air, was forced to land on the ground.
The force field shield could negate the damage from the orbital laser, but it couldn't withstand the sheer impact generated by its immense energy.
Li Lin knelt on one knee, his Overlord Warrior mech suit creaking under the pressure of the energy shockwave.
Fortunately, the suit had been upgraded earlier, with its material replaced by zero-element composite, capable of withstanding the high pressure required for fusion reactions. Otherwise, it would have been nearly destroyed the moment he hit the ground.
The space-based satellite's massive aperture produced a cylindrical spiral laser beam with a radius of ten meters. Its large diameter brought terrifying power, far surpassing that of gigaton-class cannons.
Although the laser didn't last long, it was designed for surprise strikes, catching even Kayle off guard.
Ten seconds had passed. How was she holding up?
Li Lin glanced at the pitch-black holographic display before him. The AI had forcibly shut down all external sensors on the mech to protect him.
The overwhelming energy had caused some system functions to fail—communication with external networks was intermittent, scanning capabilities were unavailable, and teleportation was disabled.
He couldn't ascertain Kayle's current condition. According to the AI's calculations and judgment, she had already struggled to block the gigaton cannon earlier. It was doubtful she could withstand Gaboga's gigaton cannon, let alone the disintegration beam from the orbital satellite.
The AI lacked precise data on Kayle's divine body, reforged by celestial magic.
Based on its predictions, in about 20 seconds, the satellite beam would penetrate the divine protection of her Purifying Holy Sword. Within the next 10–30 seconds, she would be completely annihilated by the energy.
Li Lin had no intention of killing Kayle. Doing so would not only provoke Morgana's wrath but also diminish their chances in the final battle against the Void.
His goal today was simply to use his power to intimidate Kayle, strike at her pride, and make her understand that inheriting divine strength didn't make her invincible.
If possible, he even hoped to mediate between the two prideful sisters. Reconciliation would save a lot of trouble later.
Fifteen seconds passed.
Li Lin forcibly controlled his mech to stand and ordered the AI, "Take me to Kayle."
As the mech trudged laboriously through the blinding white environment, another five seconds elapsed. The suit came to a halt again.
[According to observations, Kayle is in critical condition and nearing death.]
[Ceasing power to the orbital satellite.]
[Recalibration of the satellite's orbit will take approximately 17 days.]
[During this time, you will be unable to utilize the satellite beam again.]
As the AI's voice trailed off, the energy readings on the mech's display plummeted dramatically.
Regaining visual access to the outside world, Li Lin gasped at the sight before him.
He was standing in the center of a cylindrical crater 20 meters in diameter, with the mech's sensors indicating an altitude of -5,316 meters.
In other words, if the orbital satellite had an uninterrupted energy supply and no cooling period, the disintegration beam could easily penetrate a planet!
"Matter disintegration beams are already like this. Just how devastating would the planet-destroying main cannon of a starship be?" Li Lin murmured to himself.
Shaking off his thoughts, he refocused on the life-detection data displayed by the system and fixed his gaze a few steps ahead.
There lay Kayle, her body drenched in golden blood.
Her breathing was faint, and her once waist-length silvery-white hair had burned away, leaving only shoulder-length strands. The celestial magic-forged armor she wore was shattered, its fragments scattered amidst golden sparks, merging with the cracked skin of her broken body.
Two dimly glowing, fracture-laden holy swords rested beside her, stripped of their former azure brilliance and sacred purity.
[Name: Kayle]
[HP: 2,522 (decreasing steadily)]
[MP: 630 (decreasing steadily)]
[Status: Divine Body Shattered, Energy Leaking, Critical Condition...]
[Energy Leak: Losing 30 HP and 20 MP per second. Healing effects are halved.]
[Divine Body Shattered: Her sacred form has been destroyed by immense energy. Once her MP reaches 0, she will lose her divinity and die.]
"Damn… this is serious," Li Lin muttered, his brows furrowing as his expression grew solemn.
The AI's knowledge of celestial hosts was based entirely on Zoe, whose nature differed significantly from ordinary hosts. She had fused with the Twilight Star Spirit's consciousness, unlike typical "mortal forms" bestowed with divine blessings.
Even among the Star Spirit Hosts, there are disparities.
Let alone those like Kayle and Morgana, who each inherited only a portion of their mother's power.
To humans, they may seem like mighty "divinities," but in the eyes of true celestial warriors, demigods, or ancient deities of Runeterra, they are nothing more than a flicker.
Li Lin quickly approached Kayle's side and leapt out of his mech.
"I… I actually… lost…" A faint, almost inaudible voice struggled from Kayle's lips, stained with golden blood.
Her trembling, fractured arms pressed into the rocky ground, trying to lift her upper body. But even keeping her body from crumbling completely was an arduous task, and such a violent motion only worsened her injuries.
With a sharp, glass-like crack, the web of fractures on her right arm grew more pronounced, golden light seeping from within. It seemed ready to shatter into a cascade of radiant fragments at any moment.
"If I were you, I wouldn't move so much," Li Lin said coolly. "It will only hasten your death."
"Ju… cough, cough…"
Kayle spat a mouthful of blood, using all her remaining strength to lift her head. Her dim, barely-open eyes locked onto the man before her.
"Justice… does… not die!"
"Even gods can perish, just like mortals," Li Lin replied mercilessly. "And you are no god. You claim to embody justice, but you are merely a mortal blessed by true divinity. Even your so-called 'justice' is but an extreme."
"If you're going to kill me… do it…"
Kayle's eyes unfocused as she gasped for breath. Every word drained her life force and mana further.
"Don't… insult… me…"
Li Lin shook his head, letting out a sigh.
The angelic sisters were too deeply influenced by the power of the Star Spirit. Even now, Kayle clung fiercely to her ideal of "justice."
When would they understand? The beliefs they each held so dearly could only be true justice if united. Perhaps, from their mother, Mihira, this notion of "justice" had already been twisted…
Unless the sisters could reconcile and achieve true unity of heart and mind, the extreme emotions driven by their inherited power would shadow them for the rest of their lives.
As Li Lin's thoughts wandered, his AI alerted him. He looked upward.
A streak of black light flashed across the sky, accompanied by a tearful cry from above: "Sister!"
In the blink of an eye, Morgana descended and landed beside Kayle. Cradling her sister in her arms, she gently caressed her face, her gaze filled with sorrow.
Feeling the warmth and faint bond of their shared bloodline, the dying Kayle managed a rare smile.
"Sister…"
