Chapter 8:
Chapter 8: Help From Noble People:
Feng Qianqian refused to abandon her beliefs without a fight. Determined, she tried to counter Wang Zhenxing’s arguments with examples of self-made success.
“There’s an entrepreneur surnamed Ma who started from nothing after college. He now owns a massive gaming company, and his firm created the most popular social media platform. Isn’t that a testament to hard work?” she argued.
“The person you’re talking about started his company decades ago when opportunities were abundant. Do you have any idea how valuable timing is?” Wang Zhenxing retorted.
“What about the real estate tycoon Wang? He didn’t even go to college and joined the army before building his empire. Isn’t that an example of effort paying off?” she asked.
“You’re forgetting his father-in-law—a man with countless military honors. Connections matter,” he replied smoothly.
“Then there’s the other Ma—the one who founded the online shopping giant. He started as a teacher!” she exclaimed.
“Yes, he was a teacher. But his family wasn’t poor, and he had access to ample resources. After multiple business failures, he had enough funds to try again. Without financial backing, would that have been possible?”
“Fine. What about the man named Liu who built his fortune through an e-commerce platform for home appliances? He had no background or connections!”
“He didn’t, but he found himself a powerful wife who was instrumental in his early success. She’s his ex-wife now, but her support was crucial at the start,” he explained calmly.
Frustrated, she finally blurted, “What about you? Didn’t you start from scratch?”
Smiling faintly, he took a sip of tea before responding, “Me? I didn’t have much money, but my father left me invaluable connections. That made all the difference.”
He set the cup down and continued, “The successes you admire are partially due to hard work, but effort alone is just one ingredient in a complex formula. Factors like timing, opportunity, luck, vision—these are far more critical than sheer effort.”
With a slight sigh, he added, “And let’s not forget: the economic landscape has changed. It’s far harder to make a fortune now. While opportunities still exist, why do you think they’d land in your lap?”
His tone grew firm. “Young lady, it’s time to see reality for what it is.”
Each statement dismantled her worldview bit by bit, leaving Feng Qianqian visibly shaken. She finally muttered, “If I want to succeed, what should I do? Can you give me some advice?”
“Leverage your strengths,” he replied coolly. “You’re quite beautiful—that’s already an advantage over many others. Beyond that, pay attention to the noble people around you. The right connections will achieve more than decades of hard work.”
Feng Qianqian considered his words carefully, sensing a deeper implication. “Mr. Wang… can you be my nobleman?” she asked timidly.
He glanced at the gold watch on his wrist before saying, “Your five minutes are up.”
Her face turned pale. She opened her mouth to say something but hesitated, fearing she might push him too far. Slowly, she stood to leave.
Just as she reached the door, his voice stopped her.
“Get me a luxury suite. I’ll be staying here tonight.”
She turned around, taking the cash and identification card he handed her. Among the bills was a thousand-yuan tip, which left her momentarily stunned.
Her monthly salary as a waitress was only a few thousand yuan. Yet, he casually handed her a tip worth a third of her monthly income.
“Mr. Wang, please wait. I’ll handle it immediately,” she said, bowing before rushing off to the front desk.
Minutes later, she returned with a room key. As she handed it to him, her eyes lingered briefly on the number: 8081.
…
After dinner, Wang Zhenxing headed to his suite.
He took a long bath to relax, letting the fatigue from the day melt away. Halfway through, his phone rang. Seeing Xu Yourou’s name on the screen, he answered.
“Zhenxing, I hope I’m not disturbing you,” her gentle voice said on the other end.
“No, I’m not busy,” he replied casually.
“What are you doing now?”
“Taking a bath,” he answered truthfully.
Her mind immediately wandered to the image of his shirtless figure from the other day. That perfect physique was engraved in her memory, and now, imagining him in the bath brought an unbidden flush to her cheeks.
Shaking her thoughts away, she asked hesitantly, “Tomorrow’s Saturday. Are you busy, Mr. Big Boss?”
“My secretary recently resigned, so I’ve been swamped with company affairs. Things are a bit hectic,” he admitted.
Hearing this, her heart sank slightly. She had wanted to ask him for help with her broken light bulb but didn’t want to add to his burdens.
“Well, take care of yourself. Don’t overwork,” she said softly.
“Thank you. You should get some rest too,” he replied before hanging up.
On her end, Xu Yourou sighed deeply. She wanted to rest, but the incessant noise from the upstairs couple continued every night. The shameless pair showed no restraint!
She gritted her teeth and tried to distract herself by watching TV. Half an hour later, she realized she couldn’t recall a single thing from the show. Frustrated, she trimmed her nails and meticulously cleaned her hands.
Finally, she returned to her bedroom, turned off the lights, and tried to sleep.
…
At 11 PM, back at Century Hotel.
Wang Zhenxing was still awake, lounging in bed with a book in hand. A sudden knock interrupted his reading.
He opened the door to find Feng Qianqian standing there timidly.
“Mr. Wang, I hope I’m not disturbing you,” she said softly.
Seeing her, he wasn’t surprised but kept his expression neutral. “You’re from the restaurant staff. Why are you here in housekeeping? I didn’t order room service.”
“I’m off duty now, but I still have a question for you,” she explained.
“What is it?”
“You didn’t answer my earlier question. Can you… can you be my nobleman?”
He raised an eyebrow. “I’m not your father. Why should I help you for no reason?”
“I… I…” She struggled for words, looking flustered.
“In other words, what can you offer me in return?” he pressed.
“I… I believe I have something,” she said nervously, taking a step forward and gently closing the door behind her.
Moments later, the sound of running water filled the suite.
Sitting back on the bed, Wang Zhenxing sighed and picked up his book again. “Why can’t young people just work hard and stay grounded? They’re always looking for shortcuts.”
