(Just a reminder, but slant text like this means one person's thoughts here)

Kaiser decided that he was going to fight with utmost caution and go all out from the beginning. Instead of waiting for his opponent to take out their grimoire and risking the chance of them being an advanced-level knight, he would rather defeat them before they could take out their grimoire.

He spellcasted and sent five phoenixes at Akeru at blinding speeds, all attacking him from different angles.

Boom.

Akeru used a mana burst to change his location.

Apart from training mostly in water spells, he had also worked on his forte, which was pure mana applications.

The mana burst method he had used in a previous fight with a magic knight had been refined by him to make it more cost-efficient, to the extent that Akeru even named the technique:

Moonwalk.

He had randomly thought of the name and didn't really want to find a better one, so he went along with it.

Akeru had used Moonwalk to escape the phoenix, but despite enhancing his eyes with mana, he still couldn't properly track the movement of the phoenixes.

So, he got hit by a red trail right on his shoulder.

Luckily, his mana skin was still active.

He had learned this trick in the three years in the grand magic zone, but he never got any opponents to test it on in battle until now.

He was sent flying, but he quickly used a nearby tree and kicked off it.

In the brief moment, he got a foothold, he used Moonwalk and dodged another phoenix.

Damn it, neither my eyes nor my mana sense is useful. They are too fast for me to perceive them. I won't be able to take more than a few more hits before I get unconscious, Akeru cursed and used another tree as a foothold.

But this time, he used it to push himself higher into the sky, barely dodging another phoenix.

Is he finally going to open his grimoire? Kaiser thought while sending a bigger phoenix to Akeru's location.

Time to run, Akeru thought as his shoes gleamed with blue color. He rushed forward into the sky.

Yes, he was flying.

It was basically an advanced application of making a broom fly, but this time, with his shoes as the target, he was able to replicate flying.

However, the speed was nowhere near fast enough to be useful in combat.

Akeru's eyes widened as, even without his mana field, he could feel the heat coming from his back. He could also feel that its size was more than twice his body volume, making it impossible to dodge with just a few mana bursts.

The mana in this one was too much, and Akeru knew that he wouldn't be able to dodge it. So, he quickly moved most of his mana towards his back and braced for the hit.

FUCCCCCCCCCCCK, it hurts! The vibrations from the force hurt him, but luckily, the flames were kept away by his mana skin.

He blacked out for a few seconds and fell to the ground.

Nearly 20 meters away from the ground, he regained consciousness and instinctively flipped his body, bursting mana from his body to ensure a soft landing in a crouch.

He looked at the Magic Knight in green who was coming at him.

Due to the large phoenix's attack, Akeru was launched a decent distance away from that location, so it took the knight a few seconds to reach him.

Why isn't he in Crimson Lions with that much firepower? Wait, that's not the important thing to think about right now. I don't have much mana left, and I don't feel that I can escape him. Should I surrender? Akeru thought while standing up from his crouch.

He absentmindedly looked at the guy with his eyes and mana field on.

He instinctively felt what the guy was going to do next.

Outstretch his right hand, but even before it's fully outstretched, seven phoenixes are gonna come out, each coming at me from directions forming a heptagon-like shape with me at the center.

Akeru instinctively formed a water ball near his hand and aimed it at the gap where he thought two phoenixes would attack in the front.

He felt seven red lines moving at him at blinding speed just as he launched the water ball and dived, shielding his body with the water ball.

Two phoenixes evaporated most of the water ball; however, their trajectory was slightly deflected, making them miss Akeru.

Akeru rolled forward on the ground and, with mana flowing in his legs, rushed at the guy.

His mana is flowing toward the ground, distributing into five branches. If I see my trajectory as I'm going toward him at this speed… Akeru's mind was going at speeds he hadn't thought was possible before.

There, Akeru mentally pinpointed where the attack would come from the ground, even visualizing five red lines coming from the ground in his mind.

Akeru moved while dodging those five red lines in his mind.

Volcanic Eruption, Kaiser thought as fire started flowing from five points around Akeru, shooting upwards.

But to his horror, he found Akeru dodging all of them.

What the fuck! Kaiser thought as he moved nearly half of his mana capacity into the next spell.

He's moving a large amount of mana, nearly five-eighths of his reserves, Akeru analyzed every move of Kaiser.

He recalled every interaction he'd had with Kaiser so far: his words, body language, how he sent spells, and the way his mana moved.

He analyzed everything and predicted the next attack.

This all happened in one second inside Akeru's mind.

In his mind, he saw a huge red line aimed at him—more like a cylinder than a line.

He crouched on the ground and, with more than half of his current mana reserves, used a mana burst.

Boom.

Akeru barely dodged as a massive cylinder of fire was fired at him.

He frowned. My predictions were off, he thought, noticing that more than half of his shoes were burned from the lower side. They had come into contact with the fire cylinder.

Not as it matters, Akeru thought as he stretched out his hand and formed a water ball, rushing at Kaiser.

He did this while in the air.

Fuck! Kaiser thought. He wasn't able to move until the last second due to balancing the recoil force of his most powerful attack.

In the last second, he barely dodged it.

Safe… Kaiser's eyes widened as he realized the water ball had hit his grimoire and destroyed it.

His target wasn't me but my grimoire. For the first time, Kaiser felt terror as he looked into Akeru's calm blue eyes.

Akeru's eyes remained calm as he landed on the ground and rushed at Kaiser.

Kaiser quickly got up and punched Akeru with his fist covered in fire.

However, even before Kaiser moved his hand, Akeru had seen through him.

He calmly sidestepped, and his palm—straight like a chopping motion—rushed at Kaiser.

Kaiser burst fire from his legs and jumped back, barely dodging the chop.

To his horror, Akeru kicked toward him, sending dust near into his eyes.

Normally, this wouldn't have been a problem for Kaiser, as he could expel the dust from his eyes in a second using mana.

However, it bought Akeru one second.

Kaiser quickly focused on his mana-sensing field.

There's nobody, he thought. It was his last thought before blacking out.

Thump.

Kaiser's body landed on the ground.

Should I kill him? Akeru thought, quickly weighing the pros and cons.

Leave it. I won't interact with Magic Knights anymore before going to the Vermillion House. It's too dangerous, Akeru thought, turning around and looking at the aftermath of Kaiser's last attack.

A five-meter deep and nearly 500-meter-long trench had been created by the cylinder attack.

I would have been dead meat if I had faced that attack, even with five times the amount of mana, Akeru thought, quickly finding his bag, which had been dropped in the forest during the battle, and rushing out of the scene.

This battle must have caused a very big commotion. I don't even have five per cent of my mana capacity left. I'd be dead if even a normal magic knight came at me, Akeru frowned and ran at full speed.

He took different paths and soon decided to rest in a very large bush for the rest of the day.

He instantly fell asleep due to exhaustion.
