Chapter 18: 17: The Weight of Blood and Shadows
After what happened in Konoha, Shiro distanced himself from everyone, even Haruto and Aizen. He didn't go to classes, ignoring everyone around him. When Aizen or Haruto tried to talk to him, he ignored them completely. Every night, he couldn't sleep, plagued by nightmares about the people he had killed in Konoha.
Late at night,
Shiro walked into the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror. His face was emotionless, with bags under his eyes as if he hadn't slept in nights. His eyes looked tired, as if they could close at any moment. When he looked at his hands, he saw the blood on them. His stomach churned. He started to wash and scrub his hands, but the blood kept flowing as if it would never stop. His hands were raw from the scrubbing, and the skin was starting to peel off, yet the blood remained. He tried to wash it off, but he couldn't. Finally, he scrubbed harder, and his hands started to bleed heavily. Only then did he realize that there was no blood on his hands.
Looking now at his hands, still raw and bleeding from his efforts, he began to wonder why he had killed them at all.
Why had he been forced to fight them?
Why him?
Why not someone else?
Did I piss off some god?
Why do I have this system?
Am I doing all this for power?
What do I have this power for?
What's the point of having this power if I can't even use it for the right things?
Why don't I remember my past life?
Did I have a loving family like everyone else?
Did I have friends?
Any siblings?
He didn't remember any of that, and it annoyed him. Shiro clutched his chest, but felt nothing but emptiness, as if he were hollow.
What was he even fighting for?
He clenched his fists and punched the bathroom wall with a fury he had never felt before, but the pain quickly hit him.
"Fuck!" Shiro screamed in pain, trying to calm himself down so as not to wake Aizen and Haruto. He held his fist in pain and paced back and forth in the bathroom, trying to get rid of the sting.
As he paced, he suddenly heard the sound of the system in his head.

Do you accept?
Yes/No
Shiro felt anger rising in him. After all, this quest confirmed that an entity was watching him, probably enjoying his suffering. But Shiro quickly calmed down, took a deep breath, and clicked 'Yes.'
This is my new target, Shiro said to himself.
He looked at himself in the mirror and realized he hadn't taken care of himself in the past few weeks. His hair was dirty, and he couldn't even remember the last time he had bathed.
Shiro ignored it and decided to leave it for tomorrow.
Then, Shiro looked down at his dirty hands. Although he could no longer see any blood on them, he still felt remorse for what he had done. It would probably haunt him for the rest of his life.
Maybe Katsu can give me some advice.
I'll visit him tomorrow anyway.
He left the bathroom, lay down in his bed, and finally, after many tireless hours, fell asleep.
The morning light filtered into the dorm room, and Shiro groaned as he slowly woke up. His body felt heavy, and the events of the past weeks weighed on his mind like a storm cloud. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, he had managed to sleep, though it was far from peaceful.
Sitting up in his bed, Shiro ran a hand through his tangled hair. He looked across the room, where Aizen and Haruto's beds were neatly made, and guilt crept into his chest. He had ignored them, pushed them away, and refused to acknowledge their efforts to help him. They didn't deserve that. Shiro took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he knew he had to do.
Haruto and Aizen were sitting at their usual spot in the academy's courtyard, their conversation halting as they noticed Shiro approaching. Haruto raised an eyebrow, his face a mix of concern and confusion, while Aizen maintained his calm but curious demeanor.
Shiro stopped in front of them, his hands in his pockets, his head slightly bowed. "Haruto. Aizen." His voice was quiet but firm. "I... I owe you both an apology."
Haruto's eyes widened. "Apology? For what?"
"For shutting you out," Shiro continued, meeting their gazes. "You tried to help me, and I ignored you. I was... dealing with a lot, but that doesn't excuse how I treated you. I'm sorry."
Haruto exchanged a glance with Aizen before breaking into a grin. "Took you long enough, man. We were starting to think you hated us or something."
Aizen, ever composed, gave a small nod. "It's good to see you're ready to talk now. We were worried."
Shiro allowed a faint smile to tug at the corner of his lips. "I appreciate you both being patient with me. I'll... try to do better."
"Good," Haruto said, standing up and giving Shiro a hearty slap on the back. "Now, let's go grab some food. You look like you haven't eaten in days."
Shiro chuckled lightly, though he declined the offer. "Not yet. I've got a few things to take care of first."
Back in the dorm, Shiro stepped into the bathroom and turned on the shower. The water was freezing at first, but he didn't flinch. It felt cleansing, as if it could wash away the weeks of grime and the weight of his guilt. He scrubbed his hair clean, letting the water cascade over him, and for the first time in weeks, he felt a semblance of normalcy return.
As he stepped out of the shower, he caught his reflection in the mirror. His face looked a little less tired, his eyes a bit sharper. He was still far from okay, but it was a start.
Shiro stood outside Katsu's quarters, his fist hovering over the door for a moment before he knocked softly. The door opened after a brief pause, and Katsu appeared, his usual calm demeanor intact. His eyes narrowed slightly in concern when he saw Shiro.
"Shiro? You don't usually come unannounced. What's wrong?"
"I... I need to talk," Shiro said, his voice low.
Katsu's expression softened, and he stepped aside to let Shiro in. "Of course. Come in."
Shiro entered and sat down, his posture tense. He stared at the floor for a moment, struggling to find the words. Finally, he spoke, his voice hollow.
"I killed two people."
Katsu didn't flinch, though his gaze sharpened. He waited for Shiro to continue.
"They weren't monsters. They were... people. They were in my way, and I had no choice but to kill them." Shiro's fists clenched on his lap. "Since then, I haven't been able to stop seeing it. Their faces. The blood on my hands." His voice cracked. "I've tried to wash it off, but it doesn't go away. It never stops. Even when I know it's not real, I can still feel it."
Katsu leaned back, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then he spoke, his tone calm but firm. "Shiro, taking a life—any life—isn't something you can just brush aside. It leaves a mark on you, no matter the reason. That kind of weight... it doesn't just disappear."
"I don't know how to deal with it," Shiro admitted, his voice trembling. "I keep asking myself why. Why me? Why was I put in that situation? What gives me the right to decide who lives and who dies? I didn't ask for this, but I still... I still did it."
Katsu sighed softly, his eyes filled with a mixture of understanding and sadness. "What you're feeling is normal, Shiro. It means you're human. That guilt, that pain—it shows you value life. But you can't let it consume you."
Shiro shook his head. "How can I not? It's always there. The guilt. The blood."
"You can't change what happened," Katsu said. "But you can decide what to do with it. Use it as a reminder. Let it guide your actions moving forward. You can't erase the past, but you can choose the kind of person you want to be."
Shiro looked up at him, his eyes filled with desperation. "And what kind of person am I now?"
"You're someone who regrets what you've done," Katsu said. "That's a start."
The words hung in the air, and Shiro let them sink in. He didn't feel lighter—not yet—but Katsu's calm, steady presence kept him grounded.
"This will stay with you, Shiro," Katsu continued. "It'll be a part of you for the rest of your life. But that doesn't mean it has to define you. Use it to become stronger—not just in power, but in character. And remember, you don't have to face this alone."
Shiro nodded slowly, his fingers unclenching. "Thanks, Katsu."
Katsu placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Anytime, Shiro."
As Shiro left, the weight on his chest felt a little less suffocating. The blood on his hands wasn't gone—it might never be—but he resolved to carry it differently. This burden would be his to bear, but it didn't have to break him.
As Shiro walked away from Katsu's quarters, the conversation lingered in his mind. The guilt still clung to him, heavy and suffocating, but Katsu's words offered a fragile thread of hope—one he clung to desperately.
The blood on his hands wasn't gone, and it might never be, but Katsu was right. He couldn't let it define him. He couldn't let it consume him.
This was his reality now. The burden of his choices. The weight of his power.
And now, he had a new target.
To get to 20% progress.
To unlock his past memories.
And maybe, just maybe, find the answers to who he was and why he was here.
Guys, who would you like to be Shiro's girlfriend?
Yoruichi Shihoin?
Unohana Retsu (Even though she's about 500 years older, age doesn't matter, right?)
Kirio Hikifune (I think she's, maybe older than Unohana)
Soi-Fon
Lisa Yadomaru
