Chapter 9: The Mate Pull
Raph's POV:
It didn't take long to find her cabin. I thanked the Moon Goddess for my insane tracking abilities. As a Royal, I can scent better than two Alphas combined.
I sniffed the air around her cabin, Jo at my side. I could hear four different heartbeats.
"Two humans and two non-humans. I guess two wolves? I can't figure out the fourth heartbeat." It wasn't a statement but rather a question. My tone was confused but laced with clear concern.
Werewolves naturally had a stronger, faster heartbeat, so it was easy to tell that two of them weren't wolves. However, the fourth heartbeat was odd. I didn't understand it.
"Who could the other wolf be? Didn't you say she seemed oblivious to other wolves?" Jo asked sternly.
The word 'boyfriend' rang through my mind as I growled possessively.
'Mine,' Atti snarled back at my thoughts.
"What is it, Alpha?" Jo asks quietly, rushing to my side.
"She mentioned a... boyfriend... maybe he is using her... maybe he knows what she is and has been lying to her... keeping watch over her until her powers became fully prominent. I don't like this, Jo. I want to go in." My response was defensive, I'll admit, but I was concerned.
We had no idea who or what could possibly be after her if she really was the reincarnation of the Tempus Matare.
Okay, maybe I was jealous too.
"My King, I don't sense a threat anywhere nearby. I don't think we should barge in without more information," Seth said submissively as we circled her house.
Betas were given heightened senses for danger to help their Alphas protect the pack. Seth also knew that I had this heightened sense, but he also knew I wasn't thinking straight.
It's natural for wolves to be possessive of their mates, especially when we aren't mated yet.
Alphas were naturally more possessive. Throw the royal blood into the mix, and this unusual situation could easily escalate to uncharted territory.
The mate pull was strong, nearly dragging me back to her at all costs. However, the information Jo gave me was making the entire thing worse.
Atti was restless and annoyed that I let her leave in the first place.
"Both wolves are in the room. I can sense their auras from a distance, which is strange," Jo says, pointing to a window on the far side of the cabin. You could see a dim light still on in the room.
"I can feel one heartbeat rising," I growl.
"Alpha, I promise I don't sense any danger. It's my duty to know these things. It's in my Beta blood. Please trust me." Jo says softly, obviously sensing my pending detonation.
Unfortunately, I was beyond reason at this point.
"He cannot have her!" Atti springs through me in a growl, running for the door.
Noah's POV:
My mind had been reeling from all the new information and the breakup. I felt overwhelmed, to say the least.
I sat on the edge of Phoe's bed at the foot of the bed when I felt a strange presence. I shifted closer to Phoe, needing to be close to her, to protect her. From what? I have no idea.
I always had these strange pulls when I was around Phoenix.
When we were 15, Phoenix and I were walking to school one day. I had this nudge, an internal feeling that something bad was going to happen, so I stayed on high alert the entire walk.
Phoenix was goofing around a few feet ahead of me. I have no idea what she saw that made her bolt out across the street. Instincts kicked in like they always had. I had reached her just two seconds before a car sped around the corner, inches from hitting her.
A loud bang at the door drew me from my trance-like state. But why doesn't it feel like danger? I thought after I heard a loud bang.
I knew something was off based on the time of day. It was now almost 4 am, and no one should be knocking at the door.
I sighed before stealing one last glance at Phoenix, who was still fast asleep. "Deja Vu," I muttered to myself before jogging to the front door.
"It's late. You shouldn't be here; are you hurt or need help?" I said behind the door.
"Open this door willingly before I bring it to the ground!" The voice boomed back in response.
I sigh to myself, ' Not much different from my dreams,' I think. It was as if the memory of each dream was coming to me as the events were starting to unfold, and that only added to my confusion.
"I can't open the door to just anyone. Why are you here?" I asked knowingly.
"I swear to the Goddess, I will make you regret asking questions if you don't let me in!" His voice boomed against the door again.
I looked over my shoulder. My body tensed as I noticed Gerald and Josie were awake and standing behind me.
I swear Phoenix could sleep through a hurricane and wake up unphased. For now, I was thankful for that.
"Alpha, no one inside will harm your mate..." I could hear another voice trying to reason with the guy.
Not that it mattered. The next thing I knew, the door was being kicked in.
