Chapter 37: Honorary Teacher
"Hello."
A crisp female voice sounded by his ear. Su Luoheng looked up at the girl beside him. She had a sweet appearance, a bright smile, and seemed friendly enough.
Although she was also wearing the academy uniform, she exuded a distinctive aura, a touch of elegance and pride in her every move.
With just a glance, Su Luoheng had already formed a preliminary judgment about the girl in his mind.
"Hmm."
Su Luoheng nodded politely and then averted his gaze, not saying much more.
"You must be Su Luoheng, right?" The girl greeted him with a smile, as if she knew him. "Nice to meet you. I'm Xu Yu."
"..."
Su Luoheng once again carefully studied the girl in front of him.
Then, a hint of realization flashed in his eyes as he guessed, "Were you also part of the freshman advancement test earlier?"
"Yes, I saw your name on the class roster. I looked around the room and happened to find an empty seat by you. I didn't expect you to arrive so early~"
"We're the only two freshmen in Class One, so let's take care of each other!" Xu Yu joked half-seriously.
"Hmm."
"You're amazing, Su Luoheng! You came in first place~"
"Just lucky."
"..."
Xu Yu's lively and cheerful personality made for easy conversation, and Su Luoheng, feeling somewhat bored, casually chatted with her. The two gradually became more familiar with each other compared to their initial exchange.
The other students in the room were similarly gathered in small groups, chatting with one another.
The classroom grew increasingly lively.
At that moment, an elderly man walked in through the doorway. His white hair was neatly combed, and he wore a dark black soul instructor's robe. He was of medium height, standing straight, with a resolute face that made him appear around seventy years old. The most striking feature about him was his deep-set eyes. His dark brown eyes gleamed with intelligence. He had an air of authority and gave off a very imposing presence.
"Hmm?"
Su Luoheng raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise flashing across his face.
He knew this teacher!
This was the very same teacher who had tested him during the entrance exam and gifted him a third-level soul device—Teacher Ran!
There was no way he could mistake someone who had given him a soul device.
However, it was quite unexpected to encounter Teacher Ran again: what were the odds that the admissions teacher would turn out to be his class teacher? It was about as likely as bumping into Zhen Reqing again.
"..."
Meanwhile, as he entered, Teacher Ran first scanned the room. When his gaze landed on Su Luoheng, a brief flicker of approval flashed in his eyes before he swiftly looked away and walked to the center of the classroom.
"It's him!" Xu Yu exclaimed in surprise, covering her mouth with her hand.
"You know this teacher too?"
Su Luoheng turned his head, asking with interest.
"Of course I know him~"
"That's none other than Teacher Ran Yuming!!"
"Is he famous?" Su Luoheng asked instinctively.
"Of course!"
Xu Yu calmed down a little before leaning in closer and whispering, "Even though Teacher Ran's strength is only that of a seventh-level soul instructor, he's recognized as one of the top three instructors in our Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineering Academy. In the more than thirty years he's taught here, almost every student who's studied under him has one foot in Illustrious Virtue Hall. Even our dean studied under him."
"If we could catch his attention, we'd have an eighty percent chance of getting into Illustrious Virtue Hall in the future!"
As Xu Yu spoke, her excitement became apparent, and it was clear from her words that she held this elderly man in high regard.
"But..."
Her tone suddenly shifted, and she muttered to herself.
"I heard he hasn't taken on any students for the last five years. I thought he had retired already. I didn't expect him to come out of retirement this year."
"..."
Hearing all this, Su Luoheng's eyes narrowed slightly, deep in thought.
He had already vaguely suspected that this teacher was extraordinary, but he hadn't expected him to hold such a prominent position within the academy.
Xu Yu suddenly remembered Su Luoheng's earlier question and curiously asked, "Do you know this teacher?"
"Mm, we've met once," Su Luoheng nodded slightly and explained, "When I took the entrance test, it was this Senior Ran who evaluated me."
"Oh~"
Xu Yu suddenly had an idea and teased, "Hey, do you think he came here because of you?"
Su Luoheng countered, "What do you think?"
"Who can say for sure~" Xu Yu shrugged with a smile.
Just as they were about to say more, they saw Teacher Ran standing at the podium, gesturing for silence.
The previously noisy classroom gradually quieted down after the teacher's arrival.
All the students focused their attention on Ran Yuming, but when their eyes met his deep gaze, each of them felt as if they were being seen through. An invisible pressure settled over them.
"I am Ran Yuming. From today onward, I will be the homeroom teacher for Year 2, Class 1. Being placed in Class 1 means your talents surpass those of your peers. Therefore, I have only one requirement: follow my teaching plan. If you cannot do that, you may leave my class now."
"Understood?"
Ran Yuming's gaze swept over the room as he spoke indifferently.
"Understood!"
Those who sat in Class 1 were all top students, and none questioned or left in response to Ran Yuming's stern, authoritative teaching style. Their experience had already taught them that any teacher who could lead Class 1 was exceptional, and many had already recognized who he was.
Seeing the students' reaction, Ran Yuming stroked his beard in satisfaction.
"Let's begin the lesson."
"By now, I'm sure many of you have already started learning about second-level soul devices. To create a second-level soul device, the first thing you need to understand is how it differs from a first-level one..."
Ran Yuming quickly shifted into teaching mode, starting with a detailed explanation of second-level soul devices.
These were materials he had meticulously prepared over the past few days.
Although his primary reason for teaching the second-year class was because of Su Luoheng, since he had taken on the role of homeroom teacher, he was determined to fulfill his responsibilities.
As the saying goes, if you're a monk for a day, strike the bell for a day.
At the very least, during his time in this role, he would take responsibility for the other students as well.
As long as they followed his instructions, while he couldn't guarantee anything beyond that, they would face no issues becoming third-level soul instructors.
"..."
In class, Su Luoheng was also listening attentively.
However, whether it was intentional or not, he noticed that Ran Yuming's gaze would occasionally drift toward him during the lesson.
Su Luoheng couldn't help but recall Xu Yu's earlier teasing remark.
Could it really be that he was here for him?
At the thought of this, Su Luoheng shook his head and dismissed the idea. He thought to himself: he was probably overthinking things.
After all, this Teacher Ran was a renowned seventh-level soul instructor, while he was just a freshman. Even if he had some talent, it wasn't enough for such a distinguished teacher to personally take charge of him.
It was probably just a coincidence.
With that thought, Su Luoheng let the matter go and refocused on the lesson.
As expected, Teacher Ran's reputation was well-deserved.
Ran Yuming's explanation of second-level soul devices was incredibly thorough, covering both theory and practice. Su Luoheng found himself noticing several issues he had previously overlooked.
