Chapter 56: Chapter 56: "Zhuqing, Watch Out!"
Xiao Wu sat beside Yun Feng, her face downcast. Yun Feng didn't need to ask why—he knew her feelings all too well. The thought of hunting spirit beasts didn't sit well with her.
Yun Feng looked at her gently and said, "Xiao Wu, survival of the fittest is nature's rule. You're kind and don't want to see spirit beasts die, but this is how the world works. The best we can do is grow stronger so we can change the rules one day."
Hearing Yun Feng's words, Xiao Wu nodded slowly, though the sadness lingered in her eyes. She knew he was right, but that didn't make it any less painful.
After about half an hour of rest, Yun Feng, Tang San, and Zhao Wuji all turned sharply in the same direction.
"Everyone up! Something's approaching!" Zhao Wuji's voice boomed.
Yun Feng immediately summoned his martial spirit, the faint glow of his spirit rings illuminating the area. Ning Rongrong instinctively darted behind him, while Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing assumed battle stances. Oscar positioned himself behind Tang San and Ma Hongjun.
The eight of them stared intently at the dense forest ahead.
The rustling sound grew louder, and even the auxiliary Spirit Masters, Oscar and Ning Rongrong, could feel the approaching entity's incredible speed.
"Zhuqing," Yun Feng said calmly, "your agility is the best among us. Go take a look."
Zhu Zhuqing didn't respond verbally but leaped gracefully into action. Her claws extended, and she ascended a nearby tree with cat-like ease. Perched on a sturdy branch, her sharp eyes scanned the direction of the sound.
"Seems like a flying snake," her cool voice reported from above. "But it's not flying very high, only about three meters off the ground.
"It has a fleshy crest on its head, larger than its head itself, and bright red like blood. Its tail is fan-shaped."
Yun Feng's eyes narrowed as he processed her description. This must be the Scarlet-Crested Phoenix-Tail Serpent, the very one Zhao Wuji and Meng Yiran encountered in the original story!
The thought made Yun Feng smirk inwardly. This time, Oscar won't be so lucky. Considering how strained our relations are, letting him get his way isn't an option.
He turned to the others and said, "If I'm right, this is the Scarlet-Crested Phoenix-Tail Serpent, a rare spirit beast. Its crest is said to have miraculous properties."
Zhao Wuji's eyes lit up at Yun Feng's words. "The Scarlet-Crested Phoenix-Tail Serpent? What a stroke of luck! Oscar, this is perfect for you. Zhuqing, keep an eye on its movements and report any changes immediately!"
Though she felt annoyed at the commanding tone, Zhu Zhuqing held her tongue and continued her surveillance.
"It's heading straight for us," she reported. "It's fast, but it looks like it's injured and struggling to maintain balance. Its wings are pale red, about six to eight meters long. This is a thousand-year-old Scarlet-Crested Phoenix-Tail Serpent."
Tang San, who had been itching to share his knowledge, finally seized the opportunity.
"The Scarlet-Crested Phoenix-Tail Serpent is non-venomous, a rarity among snakes. It attacks by constricting its prey, using its body to suffocate them.
"While its attacks are simple, its speed is unparalleled. The crest on its head stores nutrients, which it can use to temporarily boost its speed in critical moments.
"A spirit ring from this beast would likely enhance speed, either as an auxiliary boost or a personal speed buff. It's a rare find for someone like Oscar."
Zhao Wuji nodded. "So, how do we catch it?"
"As a snake-type spirit beast, its natural predator would be Ma Hongjun's Evil Fire Phoenix. The Phoenix is the king of birds and naturally suppresses such beasts," Tang San explained.
Before the discussion could continue, Zhu Zhuqing's voice rang out again.
"It's here!"
The next moment, a loud crash echoed as the serpent burst through the dense foliage. It was exactly as Zhu Zhuqing had described—a massive snake, six to seven meters long, with a blood-red crest atop its head and a fan-shaped tail.
Zhu Zhuqing launched herself from the tree, activating her second spirit ability.
"Nether Hundred Claws!"
Her razor-sharp claws slashed at the serpent's crest, but the agile beast twisted its head just in time. Her attack missed the crest and struck its body instead, producing a dull thud that caused the serpent to falter momentarily.
Startled and enraged, the serpent veered sharply, opening its mouth to release a cloud of shimmering mist toward Zhu Zhuqing. Its crest glowed as it regained its lost speed.
The mist looked toxic, prompting everyone to assume the worst. Xiao Wu was about to leap forward to help when Yun Feng's voice cut through the tension.
"Zhuqing, don't worry—it's not poisonous. It's just a scare tactic."
Trusting Yun Feng implicitly, Zhu Zhuqing didn't hesitate. She activated her first spirit ability mid-air.
"Nether Spike!"
She shot through the mist and aimed for the serpent again. Although her attack landed, it wasn't enough to pierce the beast's thick scales.
The serpent, now more furious than ever, retaliated by whipping its tail toward Zhu Zhuqing.
Still airborne with no footing to evade, Zhu Zhuqing seemed trapped. Yun Feng's eyes gleamed as
he saw his moment.
"Zhuqing, watch out!" he shouted, moving to intercept.
