Chapter 17: Chapter 17 Reminisce
Trunks, while on his daily patrol, hears a notification on his phone. A message from Bulma that had a voice note attached to it that said, "Trunks, I was able to fix one of the projectors and get a message from it. Sadly, I was only able to get the audio. Listen to it when you can. I'm not overly worried, but from what I've heard, an extraterrestrial scientist built this ship." He didn't mind multitasking; he'd just have to fly a bit slower to listen in on the message.
After fully listening to the voice notes, he puts away his phone to process what he just listened to. "Alright, there were several possible outcomes. It might be another insane scientist who is determined to exact revenge. Perhaps this one isn't even malevolent; they may have unintentionally sent their scientific experiment to Earth. Maybe whatever was inside the ship, they just want it back. Still, there's not enough information for me to make a proper plan. It's a bit frustrating just having to wait, but there's no good overthinking right now."
While Trunks was nearing the end of his patrol, he had noticed he had stumbled upon a familiar area. He was on the outskirts of Mount Paozu, and since he was in the area, he decided to pay a visit to some old family friends. "It has been a while; it wouldn't hurt to at least say hi." He thought So he headed down into the mountains.
Trunks flies slowly past, taking in the view as he follows the waters of the mountains, striking a pterodactyl that had tried to eat him in the process. Until he caught a glimpse of a house situated on a creek's edge in the distance. He flew down to continue the trip there on foot. "The East District hasn't changed a bit. From when I was here last, I hope Chi-Chi and the Ox King are doing well." He knocks on the house door as he hears the voice of an old man shout, "Coming! Hold on a minute! I'm on my way!" Opening the door is a quite large, gray-haired old man with a large beard on his face. The grizzled old man gave the young man a bear embrace in welcome; he was thrilled to see Trunks.
"Trunks! It's wonderful to see you again, young man. How are you? How has Bulma been doing? Hugging the old man back, Trunks replied, "We've been doing great, Ox King. My mom has mainly been keeping herself busy with work, doing her part to help the restoration of West City and all." "That's splendid to hear! I've been considering and discussing it with Chi-Chi; why don't you ask Bulma if she would be open to us all coming together for a party? I could even ask some of the others if they'd be interested in catching up." Hearing this, Trunks seemed fine with the idea of a get-together party. "Sure, I'll ask her. I'm sure she'd be more than delighted to see everyone else again. By the way, where is Chi-Chi?"
The Ox King, pointing towards the back of the yard, says, "Oh, she's just in the back doing some training, that's all. She's been at it for two years now." Trunks is a bit surprised to hear this: "Chi-Chi is training? My mom told me she used to be a fighter but never thought I'd hear her getting back into training. What changed, and why?" Ox King smiled and said, I think that's something you gotta ask her yourself; it's not my story to tell."
As Trunks enters the backyard, he hears grunting and fists thrown into the air. I see a middle-aged, skinny, light-skinned woman with black eyes and hair who appears to be exercising. Trunks spoke up to get the woman's attention: "Good afternoon, Ms. Son." As she takes a pause, turning her attention over to him, "Trunks! Oh, it's wonderful to see you again its been a while. I actually wanted to call Bulma so that I could talk to you. What brings you all the way over here?
Trunks told her that he had just come to visit to see how the two of them were doing. Chi-Chi was delighted to know that Trunks just wanted to make sure to keep in touch and said, "Well, that's sweet of you, Trunks; you're always welcome here. Besides, whenever I see you, it reminds me of my Gohan. From how I see it, he helped you become the fine young man you are now. You'll always be like a son to me. Oh, that reminds me; here I had wanted to give this to you."
Chi-Chi passes a slip of paper to Trunks. "When you brought Gohan back to us to bury him, I had found this inside his Gi. I had read it, but it was just a random string of numbers. I couldn't really figure it out, and you're the only person left who was really close to him. I was hoping maybe you knew something about it."
Trunks couldn't really think of anything these string of numbers could have possibly meant; maybe a code of some sort? Either way, he takes the paper and says, "Thank you. If I find out anything, I'll be sure to tell you. Also, I saw that you were training earlier; I wanted to ask what made you get back into it. Chi-Chi, with a soft smile on her face, says, "It reminds me of them. Before the Androids, I used to always watch them train together. I was always against Gohan training, but deep down I knew. Gohan just wanted to spend time with his father, so I just let him. Not a day goes by where I don't miss them. The training keeps me occupied and reminds me of the more pleasant times we had together as a family.
Trunks just smiles, happy to hear that Chi-Chi is doing well and doing her best to move forward. "That's comforting to hear. I'm glad to know you've been doing well." "I couldn't stay moping forever; aside from that, would you be interested in sticking around for dinner, Trunks?" asks Chi-Chi. "I'd love to, but I can't stay out long. My mom wanted me to go with her on another business meeting, so I have to be heading back soon. Chi-Chi replied, "No problem at all. Then tell your mother I said hi when you get back." "One more thing: is it okay if I see them for a bit before I leave?" Trunks asks Chi-Chi, who lightly nods and tells him to take all the time he needs.
Trunks approaches two gravestones nearby, stands there for a moment in silence, and exchanges a few words before heading off. "Hey, Gohan just wanted to visit again. I just hope wherever you are, you can at least see the world is at peace now. Rest in peace, my old friend, and you too, Goku."
