Chapter 55: Chapter 55: King Kai

"He's here!"

Taro took a deep breath, his steps heavy as he turned with a thud, facing the North Kai in the old-fashioned car.

"You must be King Kai, right?"

The plump North Kai sat comfortably in the car, one elbow propped on the window, his head sticking out to look at Taro. He spoke in a strange tone.

 "Correct, I am King Kai."

Taro struggled to maintain his stance, bracing himself against the ten times Earth's gravity. He looked at the North Kai, expecting a continuation, perhaps something like "who are you?" so he could respond in kind.

Instead… an awkward silence stretched on.

"You're terrible! How can someone with no sense of humor come here?!" The North Kai withdrew his head from the window, slamming the car horn in frustration.

"Hehehe..." Taro forced a smile, twitching his mouth.

So, this guy is even more boring than in the cartoons. His bad jokes are worse than the ones in the manga!

...

This time, it was the North Kai's turn to remain silent.

Bubbles, the chimpanzee, climbed up a nearby tree, watching the scene. Whether he could feel the awkward tension in the air was anyone's guess...

The North Kai got out of the car, his short and chubby figure waddling toward Taro. He looked up at the man, who was still struggling to stand properly, and most notably, had no sense of humor.

N"You're a living human? How strange. Why did you come to me?" The North Kai's small sunglasses glinted.

 Taro answered.

"I came here to train with you..." The intense gravity on King Kai's planet was draining his strength rapidly, and with his long period of hunger, Taro took a small cloth pouch from his pocket and pulled out a Senzu Bean.

 Crunch.

 Strength restored!

 Whoo—

Taro took a deep breath, his expression becoming serious. He gathered his ki, merging his spirit and energy into one. His ki, already at its peak, surged even higher, rising by fifty percent.

Now, Taro was finally able to stand straight.

"Oh? You're quite a skilled martial artist... What was that you just ate? Where are you from? You seem to be struggling with the gravity here," the North Kai said, his emotions unreadable behind the dark lenses of his sunglasses.

 Taro replied.

"I came from Earth, in the Milk Way. I couldn't make any more progress there, so I asked the gods from my world to bring me here. What I ate was a special medicine from Earth, called a 'Senzu Bean.' It instantly restores strength and fills the stomach." He then bowed to the North Kai. "Please, King Kai, teach me your ways of martial arts!"

The North Kai didn't immediately respond, instead saying,

"Senzu Beans? That's a nice thing... But if you want to train with me, it's not going to be that easy. How about this—show me a jump right here."

Taro, obediently, leaped into the air. However, he only managed to jump about one or two meters before the immense gravity of King Kai's planet pulled him down, and with a thud, his feet slammed into the ground, creating a small crater in the grass.

 The North Kai evaluated.

"Tch, mediocre..." He waved his hand toward the chimpanzee, still in the tree. "Hey, Bubbles, come over here!"

"Bru Bru—" Bubbles obediently raised his hands and ran over.

 The North Kai then said.

"Catch this guy first, and then we'll talk. I'm going for a nap now!" With that, his chubby figure wobbled off in the direction of a nearby hut.

Taro didn't say anything; he had already known that things wouldn't go that smoothly. He hadn't come here with the expectation of achieving his goal right away, so he remained calm.

"His mindset's pretty good..." The North Kai's sunglasses glinted as he walked toward the hut.

However, the North Kai didn't take it to heart. He managed the entire Northern Galaxy—he'd seen all kinds of geniuses. Not to mention, many of the warriors under Frieza's command were strong, talented individuals.

It was a shame they were all working for a tyrant! The North Kai felt irritated, but Frieza's power was simply too overwhelming. Even the Great Kai couldn't do anything about it... The North Kai didn't understand why the Kaioshin and the God of Destruction let someone like that run rampant through the galaxy, destroying planets at will. Why didn't the God of Destruction step in and deal with it?

As for whether or not he would teach the human who had traveled from Earth... Well, he'd see how things went. Soon enough, the North Kai entered the hut, lay down in a reclining chair, and the sound of snoring filled the air.

"Take it slow," Taro muttered to himself as he stretched his muscles. The chimpanzee Bubbles glanced at him for a moment before wobbling away. Then it turned its head back, as if urging him to hurry up.

"Heh!" Taro shook his head, exerting all his energy to chase after Bubbles.

In the following days, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed through King Kai's planet, accompanied by constant thuds.

 Six days passed.

"Shut up! Can't you walk more quietly?" The North Kai was disturbed from his pleasant nap and was clearly irritated. However, when he noticed that Bubbles was speeding up a bit, he realized that Taro had already improved. He was no longer as clumsy and slow as he was when he first arrived.

"Not bad, not bad." he muttered, turning over in his chair and blowing bubbles from his nose as he fell back asleep.

Taro glanced at the North Kai, who was fast asleep again, and then at the chimpanzee playfully teasing him. He thought to himself:

"I can probably start increasing the strength of my Muken... Yeah, just a little bit, gradually... I want it to look like the results of my slow training here..."

 "Double Muken!"

Taro's footsteps became lighter, and Bubbles, hearing the change in pace behind him, turned around in shock. He tossed the banana peel and took off running.

 "Stop!" Taro shouted.

"Bru Bru—" Bubbles wasn't about to stop and bolted off as fast as he could.

And so, the days passed one after another...

 Soon, half a month passed.

The chase between Taro and the chimpanzee continued.

Today, the North Kai wasn't taking a nap. He stood to the side, hands behind his back, watching Taro struggle to catch the agile chimpanzee. After observing for a while, he called out loudly,

"Still can't catch it? Hey, kid, I'm not interested in teaching you if this is all you've got!"

Taro heard the comment, watching as the chimpanzee seemed so close yet always out of reach. He thought to himself:

"I should be able to use Triple Muken by now!" With that decision made, Taro immediately activated the Triple Muken technique.

 Bang!

Taro's feet crushed the grass beneath him, and his body shot forward with incredible speed.

"Huh? Interesting…" The North Kai, observing from the side, saw a flash of light on his sunglasses. He muttered to himself, sensing something familiar in the technique, as if Taro had just used a technique similar to his own, the Kaioken.

At that moment, Taro leapt forward with a sudden burst of speed, grabbing the fleeing chimpanzee!

"Heh, got you, finally!" Taro sat down on the ground, sweating and panting as he held Bubbles, who looked annoyed, peeling another banana.

Taro grinned, stood up, and let the chimpanzee go. He turned to the North Kai and asked,

"Lord Kai, can you teach me martial arts now?"

The North Kai gave him an odd look and waved at the chimpanzee, who took his banana and walked away.

"Kid, what was that move you just used?" He walked up to Taro and looked up at him.

Behind the sunglasses, Taro couldn't tell the North Kai's expression, but he answered,

"You noticed, Lord Kai? Well… since my strength is limited, and this planet has such heavy gravity, I couldn't catch that chimpanzee. So I came up with a way—since my power can't increase for now, why not make the most of what I have and accomplish more with it?"

The North Kai raised an eyebrow.

 "Oh?"

 Taro continued explaining,

"What I mean is, if I consider my power as 'one,' I could only use the strength of that 'one' before. But after thinking about it carefully, I realized that I could maximize each bit of my power on a more microscopic scale, using every ounce of energy to its full potential. That way, I could achieve multiple times the power of 'one.' That's how I managed to catch the chimpanzee. Without that, I never would have had a chance on this planet."

The North Kai was silent for a moment, then asked,

"Did you come up with this idea only here?"

 Taro immediately responded,

"Yeah. I was already the strongest on Earth, and I never had the chance to think about developing this kind of ability. It's only after coming here to King Kai's planet that I had this idea."

The North Kai chuckled. He thought back to the many limitations of his own Kaioken—the tremendous burden it placed on the user's body. Compared to Taro, who could use a similar ability without much trouble, he felt a twinge of envy.
