Chapter 9: Beneath the Mask”
Beneath the Mask"
The Fallout
The Yakuza office was quieter than usual, the air thick with unspoken tension. Hajime sat across from Renji and Crow, his hands resting on the table as he scanned the new dossier. The Oyabun's words still echoed in his mind.
"This isn't a game, Hajime. Heroes don't stop."
Renji leaned back, arms crossed. "You really think letting Vanguard live was the right call? The Oyabun doesn't seem convinced."
Hajime met his gaze, unflinching. "I don't care if he's convinced. Killing Vanguard would've drawn the wrong kind of attention. We need time to regroup, not more heat."
Crow spoke up, his tone sharp. "Time doesn't solve everything. If Vanguard comes back, he won't come alone."
Hajime tapped the table, his mind racing. "Then we plan for that. We adapt, like we always do."
Before anyone could respond, the door slid open, and the Oyabun stepped inside, flanked by two enforcers. The room fell silent.
The Next Mission
The Oyabun's presence commanded respect, his piercing gaze sweeping over the trio. He placed a sealed envelope on the table. "A rival faction has taken something that belongs to us—a ledger with critical information about our operations. If it falls into the wrong hands, we're finished."
Renji frowned. "What's the plan?"
The Oyabun's gaze shifted to Hajime. "That's for him to decide."
The weight of responsibility settled on Hajime's shoulders, but he didn't falter. He opened the envelope, revealing a map of an abandoned warehouse near the docks. "We'll need to move fast. If this ledger is as important as you say, the faction will have it heavily guarded."
Crow smirked. "Heavily guarded is my specialty."
Renji leaned forward. "What's the play?"
Hajime's mind worked like a machine, piecing together the puzzle. "Crow, you'll create a distraction. Use your shadows to isolate their sentries and keep them on edge. Renji, I need you to create tools for infiltration—a grappling hook, lockpicks, and a silenced weapon."
Renji nodded. "And you?"
Hajime's lips curled into a smirk. "I'll handle the ledger. If things go south, we regroup here. No unnecessary risks."
The Oyabun observed in silence before finally speaking. "You've been given a chance to prove yourself, Hajime. Don't disappoint me."
The Mission: Infiltration
The docks were bathed in dim moonlight, the sound of waves lapping against the shore the only backdrop to their operation. Hajime crouched behind a stack of crates, his senses heightened as he watched Crow dissolve into the shadows.
Seconds later, chaos erupted. Shadows twisted and surged, pulling guards into darkness. Shouts of confusion echoed as Renji moved in, swiftly disabling locks and setting up their entry.
Hajime slipped inside, his movements silent and precise. The warehouse was a maze of crates and metal scaffolding, but his target was clear—the office on the second floor.
As he ascended, he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. His instincts screamed at him to stop, and he did, just in time to dodge a bullet that whizzed past his head.
The Reveal
A figure emerged from the shadows, a woman with sleek black armor and glowing red eyes. Her voice was cold and mechanical. "You've got guts coming here, Yakuza scum."
Hajime's smirk returned. "And you've got guts shooting at me without an introduction."
She didn't respond, lunging at him with blinding speed. Hajime activated his ability, slowing time as he dodged her strikes and countered with precise blows.
Despite his advantage, she was relentless, her movements calculated and efficient. He realized she wasn't just a rival enforcer—she was enhanced, possibly with abilities similar to his own.
The fight pushed him to his limits, but Hajime's strategy won out. Using the environment to his advantage, he trapped her in a makeshift cage of falling crates, giving him enough time to grab the ledger and escape.
Back at the Office
Hajime placed the ledger on the Oyabun's desk, his expression calm despite the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.
The Oyabun examined it briefly before looking up. "You did well."
Hajime nodded. "This is just the beginning. If they're willing to send someone like her after us, we'll need to be ready for whatever's next."
Renji clapped him on the back. "You handled yourself out there. Maybe you really are the future of this family."
Crow smirked. "Don't let it go to your head."
Hajime allowed himself a small smile, but his mind was already racing with possibilities. The woman he'd faced wasn't just an enemy—she was a sign of the storm to come
