Sico chuckled as Mel ducked out of the tent, leaving him alone once more. He leaned back on the cot, staring at the tent's canvas ceiling. For all his confidence and planning, there was still that sliver of doubt, that voice in the back of his mind whispering about what could go wrong. But he pushed it aside, focusing instead on the faces of the people counting on him.

The next day dawned with a sky painted in shades of amber and steel gray. The eerie glow of the rising sun cut through the ruined skyline, illuminating the cracked streets and jagged remnants of buildings. It was the kind of morning that carried a sense of foreboding, yet also a spark of hope—a rare commodity in the Commonwealth. The camp stirred to life as the team prepared for the operation, the tension palpable but controlled. Everyone knew their role, and there was no room for hesitation.

Sico stood at the edge of the camp, his gaze fixed on the distant silhouette of Milton General Hospital. His mind was sharp, focused, and ready for the task ahead. The weight of the mission sat heavily on his shoulders, but he welcomed it, drawing strength from the belief that what they were doing was necessary for the survival of so many others.

Mel approached, a bag slung over his shoulder and a confident grin on his face. "Morning, boss. You ready to stir up some trouble?"

Sico smirked. "Always. You sure you've got everything you need?"

Mel patted the bag. "Got enough explosives in here to make those mutants think the world's ending all over again. MacCready and I will keep them plenty distracted. Just make sure you and Sturges get that generator. No pressure or anything, right?"

"None at all," Sico replied dryly, clapping Mel on the shoulder. "Good luck out there."

Mel gave him a mock salute before heading off to meet with MacCready and the rest of the distraction team. Meanwhile, Sico turned to find Sturges, who was briefing his infiltration squad near the convoy of vehicles. The soldiers checked their gear one last time, their faces grim but resolute.

"You ready?" Sico asked as he approached.

Sturges nodded, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a rare seriousness. "Ready as I'll ever be. We've got the tools we need to disassemble that generator, but we're gonna have to move fast. No telling how long Mel and MacCready can keep those mutants busy."

"They'll hold," Sico said with quiet confidence. "Let's just make sure we do our part."

With the final preparations complete, the teams moved out. Mel and MacCready led the distraction team, their group weaving through the rubble-strewn streets toward their designated positions. Sico, Sturges, and the infiltration team followed a different route, skirting the hospital's perimeter to approach the building from a less conspicuous angle.

The distraction began with a thunderous explosion that echoed through the city like a clap of angry thunder. The Super Mutants, startled and enraged, roared in response as debris rained down from one of their barricades. Mel's team had struck their first target, and the mutants were already mobilizing to investigate.

From his vantage point on a nearby overpass, MacCready took aim with his sniper rifle. He exhaled slowly, steadying his hand before squeezing the trigger. The crack of the rifle was barely audible over the chaos, but the result was unmistakable—a Super Mutant collapsed, clutching at its neck as green blood spattered the ground.

"Bullseye," MacCready muttered, already lining up his next shot.

On the ground, Mel and the soldiers used the confusion to their advantage, setting off additional charges and engaging the mutants in a fierce firefight. The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder and the guttural cries of their enemies, but the team held their ground, drawing more and more of the mutants away from the hospital.

Meanwhile, Sico and Sturges slipped through a side entrance of Milton General Hospital, their team moving with practiced precision. The interior was dark and oppressive, the faint smell of decay mingling with the metallic tang of rust. Flashlights cut through the gloom, illuminating peeling paint, shattered tiles, and abandoned medical equipment.

"Stay sharp," Sico whispered, his voice barely audible. "They might have left guards behind."

The group advanced cautiously, their weapons at the ready. The echoes of distant explosions and gunfire served as a grim reminder of the battle raging outside. Sico led the way, his sharp eyes scanning every shadow and corner as they made their way toward the basement.

They encountered their first obstacle near the stairwell—a hulking Super Mutant, armed with a massive sledgehammer, patrolling the hallway. Sico signaled for the group to halt, then motioned for two soldiers to take up flanking positions.

"On my mark," he murmured.

The mutant never saw them coming. A coordinated burst of gunfire took it down before it could even raise an alarm. The team moved quickly, dragging the body into a nearby room to avoid detection.

"Good work," Sturges said quietly as they descended the stairs. "Let's hope the rest of this goes as smooth."

The basement was even darker and more claustrophobic than the upper floors. The team navigated the maze of corridors, guided by Sturges's knowledge of pre-war infrastructure and a map they'd pieced together from old blueprints. Finally, they found their target: a heavy steel door marked with faded lettering that read Generator Room.

Sturges knelt in front of the control panel, his hands deftly working to bypass the lock. "Just give me a minute… there!" The door hissed open, revealing the massive generator inside.

The machine was a hulking beast of pre-war engineering, its surface coated in dust and grime. Sturges let out a low whistle. "That's a beauty, alright. Let's get to work."

The team moved quickly, working in tandem to disassemble the generator into manageable pieces. Sturges directed the process, his expertise ensuring that nothing was damaged or overlooked. Sico kept watch, his weapon trained on the doorway, every nerve on edge.

MacCready's voice crackled through the radio, the static mixing with the distant sound of explosions and gunfire. "Sico, this is MacCready. How much longer are you guys gonna need? These mutants are more aggressive than we thought. We're holding them off, but it's getting hairy out here. I'd say we've got maybe an hour before they overwhelm us."

Sico pressed a finger to his ear, his jaw tightening as he glanced toward Sturges, who was crouched near the generator, carefully disconnecting cables and marking components for reassembly. "Copy that, MacCready," Sico replied evenly before muting the radio. He turned to Sturges. "What's the timeline looking like?"

Sturges wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, his fingers never stopping their precise work. "Thirty, maybe forty-five minutes tops to disassemble this beast without damaging anything. We should have enough time in the last fifteen minutes to haul it outta here, assuming we don't hit any snags."

Sico nodded, processing the information quickly. "Alright, keep at it. I'll update MacCready." He unmuted the radio. "MacCready, we're looking at forty-five minutes max. Sturges says we'll need another fifteen to get it out and loaded. Think you can buy us that much time?"

MacCready sighed audibly, his voice betraying a mix of frustration and determination. "Yeah, we'll hold. Just don't make me regret this, alright? I don't want to be mutant chow because someone decided to take their sweet time."

"You'll get your bonus," Sico said with a faint smirk, trying to inject some levity. "Hold the line. We'll be quick."

MacCready muttered something unintelligible before the line went silent. Sico turned back to Sturges and the team, his expression hardening. "Alright, you heard him. We've got forty-five minutes, and then we need to move. No room for error."

The soldiers nodded grimly, their focus sharpening as they resumed their tasks. Sturges worked faster now, his hands moving with practiced efficiency as he directed the team to unbolt panels, secure wires, and carefully label each part for transport. Every so often, the building trembled faintly, the reverberations of the battle outside a constant reminder of the time ticking away.

Sico's ears caught a faint noise—something out of place. He raised his hand, signaling for silence. The team froze, their movements halting as they strained to listen. There it was again—a guttural growl, faint but unmistakable, coming from the corridor outside the generator room.

"Mutants," Sico muttered under his breath. He motioned for two soldiers to take defensive positions near the door while the rest of the team continued their work. Sico himself moved to the entrance, his rifle at the ready, eyes narrowing as he scanned the dim hallway through the scope.

The growling grew louder, accompanied by the heavy thud of approaching footsteps. Sico's heart rate quickened, but his hands remained steady. He gestured for the soldiers to hold their fire, waiting for the right moment. The first mutant came into view, its grotesque form illuminated by the faint beam of a flashlight mounted on one of the soldier's rifles.

Sico didn't hesitate. He fired a single, precise shot, the bullet finding its mark between the mutant's eyes. The creature crumpled to the ground with a wet thud, but the sound drew the attention of others. More growls echoed down the corridor, and soon, the heavy footsteps multiplied.

"They're coming!" one of the soldiers called, his voice a mix of urgency and fear.

Sico barked orders, his voice sharp and commanding. "Hold the door! Don't let them get through! Sturges, how much longer?"

"Still need at least twenty-five minutes!" Sturges replied, his voice strained as he worked faster.

Sico nodded grimly. "We'll buy you the time." He turned back to the door, firing another shot as a second mutant charged. The narrow hallway worked to their advantage, funneling the mutants into a single line of fire, but the sheer numbers were daunting. The team had to conserve ammo, picking their shots carefully.

Minutes passed in a blur of gunfire and shouted commands. Sico and the soldiers held their ground, but the pressure was relentless. The mutants were ferocious, their roars echoing through the building as they clawed and smashed at the doorframe.

"We're almost there!" Sturges called, his voice tinged with urgency. "Just a few more connections to sever, and we can start moving it!"

"Make it fast!" Sico shouted back, ejecting an empty magazine and slamming in a fresh one. His arms ached from the constant recoil, and his ears rang from the deafening gunfire, but he didn't falter. They couldn't afford to.

Another explosion rocked the building, this one closer than before. Sico's radio crackled to life again. "Sico! MacCready here. We're running out of room to maneuver! These guys just keep coming! How's it looking on your end?"

Sico ducked behind cover, his finger pressing the radio button. "We're nearly done! Ten more minutes, tops! Hold on just a little longer!"

"Yeah, yeah, easier said than done," MacCready muttered, the sounds of gunfire and shouting punctuating his words. "Just hurry it up, will you?"

Sico turned to Sturges, who was disconnecting the final component with a triumphant grin. "Done! Alright, let's get this thing loaded!" Sturges and the rest of the team began carefully hauling the disassembled generator components into crates, each one marked and secured for transport.

Sico helped direct the process, his mind racing as he calculated their remaining time. "We've got fifteen minutes to get out of here and to the extraction point. Move like your lives depend on it, because they do."

The team moved quickly but carefully, the soldiers now carrying the crates while Sico and Sturges kept watch. They exited the generator room, navigating the dark, debris-filled hallways with grim determination.

The sound of the battle outside grew louder as they neared the exit, the muffled roars and explosions creating a chaotic backdrop. Sico's radio buzzed again. "MacCready to Sico! We're pulling back to the extraction point! You'd better be right behind us!"

"We're on our way!" Sico replied, his voice steady despite the urgency. He turned to the team. "Double time, people. Let's move!"

The group broke into a brisk pace, the soldiers hefting the heavy crates with gritted teeth. As they emerged into the open air, the full scale of the battle became clear. Fires raged, casting flickering shadows over the ruined landscape, while the Super Mutants roared and charged in a frenzy.

MacCready's sniper rifle cracked from a nearby rooftop, covering the team's retreat as they made their way to the waiting vehicles. Mel was on the ground, barking orders and tossing grenades to keep the mutants at bay.

"About time!" Mel shouted as Sico and the team arrived, the crates quickly loaded into the convoy. "Let's get the hell outta here!"

The vehicles roared to life, their engines growling as the convoy sped away from the chaos. Sico leaned out of one of the trucks, firing a few last shots at the pursuing mutants before the team finally left them behind.

As the camp came into view, a collective sigh of relief swept through the group. The mission was a success, but the cost was evident in their exhausted faces and depleted supplies. Sico climbed out of the truck, his muscles aching and his mind buzzing with the enormity of what they'd accomplished.

"Good work, everyone," he said, his voice steady despite his exhaustion. "Take a breather. We've earned it."

Sturges clapped him on the back, his usual grin returning. "Not bad for a day's work, huh? Now let's see if we can actually make this thing useful."

Sico nodded, watching as the team unloaded the generator components. Despite the chaos, they'd pulled it off—and in the Commonwealth, that was no small feat.
