Chapter 139: Chapter 139: The Battle on the Atoll Island
Chapter 139: The Battle on the Atoll Island
The villagers wanted to flee, but where could they run?
These humans, who had submitted to the invaders and demonic creatures, were engulfed in eerie white flames.
The flames were both enchanting and perilous.
Struggling for only a brief moment, their bodies turned to ash on the ground.
Sometimes, such people were more frightening than the enemies themselves.
Much like the traitors who brought invaders into villages under the guise of survival, selling out their kind for personal gain.
Such deaths were far from deserving of sympathy.
Alexander, with a single thought, killed so many, causing the blonde woman to visibly panic.
Sophia also showed a hint of apprehension.
The murderous aura around Alexander eased somewhat as he spoke softly: "This place is safe now. You can leave with your companions."
Alexander knew the village still housed many women, most of them visibly pregnant.
Perhaps some of them were also loyal to Arkarin Moja, but that didn't matter.
Women who had chosen to serve as men's slaves for survival posed no real threat.
What Alexander wanted was to leave Sophia with the impression that he didn't harm women or children.
He understood Sophia's novel better than anyone else—besides Sophia herself, of course.
After all, many of the plots in her story about the justice-upholding "Black Knight Alliance" had been his own suggestions.
Mercenaries of the Mercenary Guild wore masks, and so did the black knights of her alliance.
The parallels were unmistakable.
Alexander had every reason to leverage Sophia's fantasies about the "Black Knight Alliance" to further the interests of the Mercenary Guild.
Sophia was easy to deceive.
Summoning her courage, she asked, "Who… exactly are you people?"
Alexander gave her a deep look but said nothing, turning to walk away.
Jack, understanding his cue, manipulated his spiritual energy to open a large portal and respectfully invited Alexander to step through.
The two masked figures disappeared at the entrance of Mang Village.
"We're saved! We're saved!"
The blonde woman, lying in the vehicle, alternated between crying and laughing hysterically, seemingly on the verge of a mental breakdown.
Sophia stared at the spot where Alexander and Jack vanished, her expression complicated.
"This world is so mysterious, getting harder and harder to understand."
"Could there really be an organization like the Black Knight Alliance?"
"Punishing the wicked and saving the innocent in the shadows of the world?"
But she clearly remembered that masked man had wanted to kill her!
Why, then, had she been spared?
Could it be…
Sophia's eyes suddenly widened.
Could it be they knew about the Divine Family's dealings with the Moon Worship Sect?!
Did they spare me that day only because I'm a woman and they don't kill women or children?
In truth, this was all Sophia's imagination.
At the time, Jack simply wasn't skilled enough to avoid detection by the officers present, so he had hesitated.
Meanwhile, the battle on the atoll island had come to an end.
The island was strewn with the corpses of demonic creatures.
Many of these creatures had been subdued by the mercenaries and bound tightly with the extraordinary plant, Space-Concealing Vine.
The Mercenary Guild had suffered significant losses as well.
Many mercenaries lay lifeless on the ground, their bodies unmoving.
Yet, the mercenaries didn't mourn the deaths of their companions.
Mercenaries were a unique breed—loners in life, rarely forming deep emotional connections.
Giovani swallowed a Wild Strawberry, clutching his bleeding abdomen, and burst into hearty laughter:
"We've struck gold! We've struck gold! The mission details said living demonic creatures are worth more than dead ones!"
"Who would've thought the guild had something as miraculous as Space-Concealing Vine, able to bind these creatures so tightly!"
The mercenaries glanced at their plentiful spoils and smiled knowingly.
Who didn't want to earn the guild's rewards?
Who didn't want to grow stronger?
The lower-ranked mercenaries eyed Giovani devouring Wild Strawberries with envy.
If only those who had died had enough Wild Strawberries, they might have survived.
If only they had Popeye's Spinach, the battle wouldn't have been so grueling.
Among the mercenaries, however, one stood apart.
She seemed neither excited nor triumphant—she even appeared a little dejected.
Her codename was Jade Rabbit.
Standing alone on the beach, her slender figure gazed out at the sea.
The ocean breeze lifted her skirt, revealing her snow-white thighs, creating a unique and poignant beauty.
Giovani silently sighed to himself: "She's just a young girl. With so many dead, she probably can't handle it right now."
Limping slightly, Giovani approached Jade Rabbit.
He gently patted her frail shoulder with an air of seasoned weariness and sighed: "Don't be sad, little beauty. This is the fate of mercenaries."
Lately, Giovani had developed a fondness for young, delicate girls and was harboring some predatory thoughts.
Jade Rabbit didn't respond to him.
Instead, she mumbled something under her breath.
Giovani didn't catch it and frowned.
"What did you say?"
This time, he heard it clearly.
"It's over, it's over… We're all going to die…" Jade Rabbit muttered neurotically.
Giovani was stunned.
"What? Why?"
Jade Rabbit turned her head and stared at Giovani with wide eyes.
"They're gone. They all ran away. I can't bring them back. We're all going to die. It's all your fault."
Her words were tinged with a thick accent from her hometown.
People tend to revert to their native dialects when truly panicked.
Giovani was even more confused.
"My fault? What did I do?"
At that moment, Jade Rabbit moved.
The massive scythe in her hand swung directly at Giovani's head!
"Holy—!"
Giovani rolled wildly, narrowly dodging the deadly blow.
He quickly got to his feet, staring at Jade Rabbit in shock.
"What are you doing?"
Jade Rabbit, gripping her scythe, slowly advanced toward Giovani, muttering neurotically:
"It's your fault. That family got away. I can't bring them back. I don't want to be punished by the guild, so I have to kill you."
Jade Rabbit was still hung up on the fact that Giovani had let the family of three go, exposing the guild's operations in the process.
Giovani felt an instant headache.
"Come on! They didn't even see my face! That's not breaking the rules!"
Jade Rabbit raised her enormous scythe high.
"But they saw so many mercenaries. They should've been killed, and you let them go."
The scythe came down.
Giovani's right hand transformed into a massive cleaver, blocking the attack.
At that moment, he no longer found the girl in the rabbit mask charming.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
Suddenly, the ground began to quake violently.
Jade Rabbit dropped her scythe, crouched on the ground, clutching her head, and stared wide-eyed in terror.
"The Guild Master is here. He's angry!"
A man wearing a white coat and an angel mask strode quickly over to Giovani and Jade Rabbit—it was Levi, known as Scalpel, who said grimly, "Something's wrong. I sense an extremely powerful spiritual presence; there's a strong demonic creature nearby, one we can't handle, Giovani, call for your ship immediately, we need to leave now!"
For this mission, Giovani had brought several small ships specifically for transporting live demonic creatures.
He was wealthy, and his wealth allowed him to claim a larger share of the mission's rewards.
Giovani nodded.
Levi's spiritual sensitivity was unmatched, far stronger than anyone else's, and his ability to detect danger was remarkable.
Not daring to waste any time, Giovani pulled out his phone and quickly sent a message.
The tremors grew stronger, as if some ancient beast was awakening.
"Roar!"
