Chapter 150: Chapter 150: Extraordinary Plants vs. the Demon Overlord
Chapter 150: Extraordinary Plants vs. the Demon Overlord
Before the Demon Overlord could fully descend into the courtyard, the Vine of Ascension lashed out with a thick vine, striking at him.
"Boom!"
The vine's overwhelming light energy almost shattered the Demon Overlord's form.
With a muffled grunt, the Demon Overlord tumbled into the vegetable patch.
The Vine of Ascension, capable of producing evil zombie roses, demonstrated its paradoxical nature. While its flowers were wicked and malevolent, its vines embodied a force of pure, domineering light.
As soon as the Demon Overlord hit the ground, the Wishwood Tree radiated a haunting green glow.
Its eerie power of desire suppressed the Demon Overlord completely, pinning him in place.
The Demon Overlord stared at the two plants in shock.
"What… what are these things?"
The flowers of the Vine of Ascension could trigger a zombie apocalypse, their evil and seductive nature contrasting sharply with the vine's righteous light energy.
The Wishwood Tree, born from the collective desires of countless beings, bore the weight of their yearnings and ambitions.
These two plants, sensing their master Alexander's peril, had seemingly activated some unknown passive defense mechanism and suddenly moved to protect him.
Only now did Alexander realize these extraordinary plants were more than just decorative or fruitful—they could fight.
The combat prowess they had just demonstrated far exceeded Alexander's own strength.
If these plants were sentient beings, they would undoubtedly be titans capable of dominating a region.
With the two extraordinary plants guarding him, Alexander's confidence soared.
He raised his blazing cyan fists formed from the Heavenly Flame and smashed them toward the Demon Overlord.
The Demon Overlord let out an enraged roar as a black barrier rose up, easily deflecting Alexander's attack.
The Vine of Ascension and the Wishwood Tree quivered slightly, almost as if expressing their dissatisfaction with Alexander's weak efforts.
Just as the Demon Overlord tried to rise, the two plants launched another assault.
The combined forces of light and desire caused the courtyard to flicker between brightness and darkness.
The Demon Overlord's body was gradually dragged into the soil of the vegetable patch by the plants' roots and vines.
Unable to break free, the Demon Overlord fixed his crimson eyes on Alexander, filled with venomous hatred.
"Good! Very good! I now know of your existence in the human country, Alexander. This trip was not in vain!
"Next time, it won't be this easy!"
Alexander froze for a moment.
Next time?
Wasting no time, he directed the flame mecha to stomp down on the Demon Overlord's remaining head.
The Demon Overlord's body crumbled into ash, black particles floating like fireflies in the air.
Alexander frowned deeply.
His stomp had landed on nothing but an illusory energy—this creature didn't have a physical form!
Extinguishing the Heavenly Flame, Alexander removed his mask and bent down to pick up a stone left behind where the Demon Overlord had disintegrated.
Running his fingers over it and even sniffing it, his eyes widened in astonishment.
"This is just an ordinary stone."
Yet the lingering spiritual energy on the stone revealed its extraordinary nature.
Alexander muttered to himself, "How immense must that creature's spiritual energy be? Just overlaying it onto a stone could produce such terrifying power."
The Demon Overlord had left behind a fragment of his spiritual energy, attached to the stone to form an avatar—and even that was more than Alexander could handle.
The Demon Overlord's spiritual energy was incredibly unique, possessing an exceptionally high quality.
Alexander tossed the stone into the pit he had prepared to bury the succubus Yuna.
He wanted to see if the soil of the vegetable patch would undergo any changes.
The Vine of Ascension and the Wishwood Tree returned to their dormant states, though the Wishwood Tree's branches glowed faintly green.
A small, unripe super fruit slowly appeared on one of its branches.
It was tiny, no larger than a peach pit, and still far from maturity.
With sufficient spiritual energy as fertilizer, this super fruit would eventually ripen.
From the dark spiritual energy radiating from the fruit, Alexander deduced that it was a dark-attribute super fruit.
Alexander fell into deep thought.
The Demon Overlord's spiritual energy was of the dark attribute, resulting in a dark-type super fruit.
When the Skeleton King was used as fertilizer, the resulting super fruits had been the Yellow Spring Fruit and the Soul Soul Fruit, both tied to the undead.
Could it be that using A-rank or higher spiritual energy as fertilizer would always yield super fruits corresponding to the donor's attribute?
"Next time, I should capture a few A-ranks to test this theory."
The first person that came to Alexander's mind was Desmond of the Holy Order.
If there were any A-ranks left in the South Sea, it had to be Desmond.
Gazing at the moon above, Alexander murmured, "That succubus was wearing the robes of the Holy Order. I should ask Desmond for an explanation."
Alexander knew perfectly well that the succubus had no connection to Desmond.
Lily monitored Desmond around the clock, sending detailed reports of his movements to the Hunter Guild's back office every night.
No detail was too small—whether it was the number of bathroom breaks or the cups of coffee he drank.
With a single thought, Alexander summoned the Demon Ape. Sensing Alexander's call, the creature quickly appeared in the courtyard.
Alexander issued a command:
"Stand guard here. Leave only when the sun rises."
The Demon Ape bowed respectfully and watched Alexander leave the courtyard.
At the gate, Alexander paused and cast a complex look at the extraordinary plants within the yard.
Without the Vine of Ascension and the Wishwood Tree, he likely would have perished today.
If only I could fully control these plants… would I not dominate this world?
There was one more extraordinary plant in the vegetable patch: the white lotus platform left behind after harvesting the Heavenly Flame of Creation.
However, the lotus platform had remained dormant since the flame's extraction.
If it weren't for the faint spiritual energy it emitted, Alexander might have dismissed it as an ordinary lotus platform.
Inside the loft, two soul-reaping servants were tending to their injuries.
In the kitchen, Yvette brought out a plate of desserts and set it on the table, joining the demon Bellringer and Lily.
A cup of steaming coffee sat on the counter.
"Sir?"
Seeing Alexander enter through the front door, Yvette immediately stood up and brought him the coffee.
She looked visibly uneasy.
The commotion in the courtyard earlier had been significant. She had been about to investigate when she saw the succubus flying away into the night sky.
From the soul-reaping servants, she had learned about Yuna's invasion of the old district.
Yvette herself had confronted the succubus but realized she was no match. Fortunately, Yuna had been in poor condition, allowing Yvette to escape unscathed.
Still, she was apprehensive. While she didn't believe Alexander would be injured, she suspected he had suffered a setback.
Since meeting him, she had never seen him fail.
She couldn't help but wonder: would this man, who had always seemed unstoppable, harbor resentment after encountering such a challenge?
Yvette assumed Alexander's mood must be terrible.
To her surprise, Alexander accepted the coffee with a smile.
"Thank you. You've worked hard recently."
His tone was as calm as ever, as if he hadn't just faced near-death moments ago.
"Huh?" Yvette blinked in confusion.
Alexander sat at the head of the dining table, sipping his coffee with an air of serenity.
"How's the lab coming along?"
Rather than dwelling on his frustration, Alexander focused on practical matters.
He didn't coddle others, nor did he coddle himself. Only incompetent leaders vented their failures on their team.
Yvette smiled in relief.
"Everything is running smoothly at Apocalypse Corp so far."
"Good. If you need more funding, let me know."
After a moment of thought, Alexander added:
"Prepare a detailed map for me, one showing all the cities in the human country.
Highlight areas with volcanoes. Bring it to my room later."
Yvette nodded slightly and went to carry out his instructions.
Alexander stirred his coffee with a small spoon before turning his gaze to the nervous Lily.
"What's your name?"
Lily kept her head down, not daring to meet his eyes.
"Lily. No surname."
Alexander smiled warmly, like a friendly older brother.
"Can you tell me why that monster was after you?"
