Chapter 54: Chapter 54: The Night Before the Siege
Chapter 54: The Night Before the Siege
Stars tore through the sky, blinking eerily in the darkness.
The moon was large tonight, and the wind howled.
A pair of siblings sat on a stone in front of the garden Alexander was about to complete, unable to sleep.
Most of the streetlights in the old district were broken, leaving the white lamps in the garden as the only light source in the area.
The siblings huddled together, staring at the garden lights, imagining what life would be like in the new district.
They didn't notice the several pairs of crimson eyes lurking in the shadows, watching them.
In the darkness, a rustling sound grew louder. The sister sensed something amiss and glanced toward the blackness at the end of the path.
The "rustle, rustle" sound became more distinct.
Something was running rapidly on the concrete path, and it was getting closer.
A dark silhouette darted by, and the sister screamed as she threw herself over her brother to protect him.
"Ah!!!"
She cried out in agony, her shoulder now covered in blood. If it wasn't treated soon, she'd likely bleed out by the end of the night.
The brother's face turned pale with fright. Through the shelter of his sister's embrace, he saw the creature.
A deep, gut-wrenching terror bubbled up from within.
The creature was covered in black fur, walking on four legs with its tail swaying behind it like a dog.
But its head was unlike anything that could be called a dog.
Its head was covered with countless mouths, one of which was currently chewing on the girl's flesh.
Between those mouths, two scarlet eyes stared greedily at the siblings.
"M-m-monster!"
The brother stuttered in terror.
"Help! Someone help us!"
The sister clutched her brother tightly, her terrified cries piercing through the silent night.
In the center of the old district, Ethan Blake's eyes shot open. Black bull hair sprouted all over his body as he dashed toward Alexander's garden.
His speed was incredible, like a raging bull.
"Go away! Get away! Please, just leave!"
The sister, trembling, waved a branch at the creature in an attempt to scare it off.
Her eyes were filled with terror, blood dripping from her shoulder with no means of stopping it.
The monster seemed to be playing a game, like a cat toying with a mouse, mocking the two pieces of meat in front of it.
Finally, it grew bored. Unable to resist the sweet scent of blood, it lunged at the girl.
"You bastard!"
Ethan Blake roared, charging in from the street and smashing the monster's head with a punch.
After dealing with the creature, he quickly checked the girl's injuries:
"Are you two okay?"
But he soon realized that killing the monster had infuriated the others lurking in the shadows.
From another alley, more and more pairs of crimson eyes glowed, revealing their presence.
Over ten of these dog-like monsters surrounded the siblings and Ethan.
Sweat trickled down Ethan's temples.
It wasn't that he couldn't fight these monsters.
They were merely F-rank creatures that could be taken down with heavy firearms.
The real problem was protecting the two civilians behind him.
These monsters weren't very intelligent; their numerous mouths drooled as they eyed human flesh, willing to die just for a taste.
Ethan slowly retreated, practically pressed up against the siblings.
"If just one more officer were here, we could save this pair!"
Ethan's heart filled with growing resentment toward Welma.
One of the monsters couldn't resist the lure of flesh any longer and launched an attack.
Ethan mustered his strength and swung a punch, sending the monster flying dozens of meters away, howling in pain.
With that action, the stalemate was broken. The creatures rushed toward the trio in a frenzy.
Ethan fought against more than ten monsters alone, but one had already set its sights on the siblings. It darted around Ethan to pounce on them from the side.
"Damn it!"
Ethan's heart sank. He abandoned his attack and defense, lunging forward to grab the monster that was aiming for the siblings.
Other creatures bit into Ethan's back.
At that moment, an orange figure appeared from nowhere, rushing toward the siblings.
Seeing another monster, Ethan's eyes widened in despair.
He had failed to protect them after all.
However, the next scene left him stunned.
The orange figure was a large tabby cat, almost the size of a tiger.
The big tabby let out a chilling yowl and bit through the neck of one of the monsters, positioning itself protectively in front of the siblings.
Its copper bell-sized eyes glared fiercely at the pack of creatures.
Soon after, two more large tabby cats raced across the rooftops, swiftly joining the battle to attack the monsters.
Ethan Blake couldn't understand why the monsters would protect humans, but he didn't have time to dwell on it.
Now free of worry for the siblings, he quickly dispatched the remaining monster hounds.
The three large cats, seeing the hounds dead, arched their backs and began to advance on Ethan, who was still in his wild bull form.
Ethan grew vigilant, preparing to fight.
A raspy voice called out from afar:
"Big Yellow, Second Black, Third Scarface, come back."
The three large cats swiftly shrank down to the size of regular wild cats and scurried toward a small courtyard.
Ethan looked up to see a ragged, beggar-like figure standing on the wall of a farmhouse.
It dawned on him that this was an awakened one, the one who had just saved the siblings.
Ethan greeted the old beggar:
"Thank you, senior, for your help!"
The old beggar lifted his head, and the sight of the tiger-beast mask on his face made Ethan's pupils contract.
A Mercenary!
The old beggar waved his hand dismissively:
"Young man, I'm just following orders. Times are getting unstable, so try not to go out too much."
With that, he scooped up the three wild cats and disappeared into the darkness.
The beggar's words left Ethan feeling uneasy, a sense of shame rising from within.
Following orders meant following the president's orders, the Guild's orders.
The Mercenary Guild had managed to deploy a strong presence to guard the old district, but what had the Security Bureau done?
The bureau, whose duty was to protect the people, had withdrawn all its officers from the old district to fortify its own defenses!
A bitter taste filled Ethan's heart as he saluted solemnly in the direction where the old beggar had vanished.
He then lifted the injured girl into his arms and ran toward the hospital.
The first light of dawn cut through the darkness, awakening the city.
Joggers appeared on the streets, parents led their children to school, and office workers hurried along, breakfast in hand.
The mix of car exhaust and the aroma of fried dough sticks and soy milk created the bustling scent of the city.
Everything seemed as usual.
Alexander finished the last bite of his fried dough stick at a street-side breakfast stall.
"How much?" he asked.
The stall owner had been staring at a passing red sedan, lost in thought. She snapped back at the sound of Alexander's voice.
"So beautiful," she muttered softly.
She then briskly walked over to Alexander:
"Six and a half. For you, six."
Alexander reached into his pocket, pulled out some money, handed it to her, and stood up to leave.
"Come again, young man!" the stall owner called out.
Alexander paused, giving her a serious nod in response.
Suddenly, the shrill sound of an air raid siren echoed over Bluewater City.
Parents grabbed their children and hurried toward the nearest buildings.
Office workers stared at the sky in stunned fear.
In an instant, chaos engulfed the city.
The monsters had begun their siege.
Alexander's face remained expressionless as he walked toward the Old Oak Café, his thoughts unreadable.
In stark contrast to the panicked crowds around him, he moved with a calm detachment.
Pushing open the door to the Old Oak Café, he found Lilin and Qingqing already inside. They greeted him respectfully.
Staring out the window, Alexander muttered to himself in a voice only he could hear:
"I wonder how many people in Bluewater will die today."
Yvette Ivanova approached, bowing slightly:
"Good morning, sir."
In a soft voice, Alexander replied:
"Close the door; a storm is coming."
