After explaining why he had to switch to his left hand, they finally understood it was so Tsuna could still play volleyball earlier.
Tsuna might still be able to use his right hand normally after a year, but it would take longer for it to heal properly for intensive play, where the injured part was crucial for him to spike and serve.
"Ahh, yeah, I think the doctor mentioned that a while back..."
Tanaka placed both hands behind his head as they walked toward the gym.
Suga seemed a bit concerned and asked, "But Tsuna, are you sure it's alright for you to come back now?"
Daichi nodded. "Yeah, you can always come back later. The club is always open for you."
"It's fine..."
Tsuna looked at them quietly before glancing down at his right hand. He raised it to his chest and clenched it while thinking, 'Is my right hand really that good?'
He had never actively thought about it—just like breathing.
However, it seemed the same logic applied: when you lose your breath, you realize the importance of life.
The same was true for his hand.
He let it relax before clapping his hands together in front of his face, the pop sound making the others look at him strangely.
'Besides, it has to be now...'
That complex feeling he experienced back then was still bothering him to this day. There could only be one way to find out why, and it had to be through the very thing that gave him those feelings in the first place: volleyball.
As they were about to enter the gym, hurried footsteps were heard along with heavy breathing.
"Hmm?"
Tsuna turned and saw the two students he had 'raced' that morning running toward the gym, likely trying to determine who would get there first.
Unlike earlier, when they had insulted each other to their faces, they were now silent, their determination clear.
Everyone watched them speechlessly.
"Kageyama looks smart, but he can be quite dumb sometimes, huh?"
"Looks can be deceiving..."
"They just wasted their stamina for nothing."
Tsuna heard the others mumbling as he chuckled. Daichi had mentioned they had interesting freshmen this year and had prepared a practice game he called 'a test' for them.
"Well, since we're doing a test..." Still looking back at the weird duo, Tsuna suddenly spoke, "...why not just put me in too?"
"Uh? Out of nowhere?"
Daichi tilted his head in confusion, and so did the others. Tanaka scratched his head and asked, "Why do you want to play in this practice game anyway?"
"..."
Suga also thought the same thing, as it was unlike Tsuna to take the initiative to join practice games.
As they walked into the gym, Tsuna raised his left hand and said, "To test this guy, of course."
"Ohh!"
They nodded in understanding.
"Whoaa! Kageyama, you bastard! This time I won, haha!"
"Keuhk! It doesn't count! The senpais came in first..."
"Huh! Didn't you use this bullshit earlier this morning, stupid Kageyama?"
The two loudmouths immediately started bickering again. Tsuna noticed Daichi's smile getting wider, but his eyes seemed colder, which made it clear their captain was starting to lose patience.
"What is this noise? Oh, isn't it your majesty?"
A mocking voice cut through the chatter. Tsuna turned to see a tall blond wearing glasses walking in, with a shorter, freckled boy by his side.
'Hmm, how tall is he? At least 188 cm, no?'
Tsuna thought as he observed the blond with glasses.
He himself was 186 cm this year, already considered one of the tallest in the club alongside Asahi. But it seemed that this particular freshman had him beat.
"Tsukishima..."
"Oh my apologies, King. This little peasant know nothing of etiquette..."
"...you bastard!"
Tsuna glanced at the group, now all bickering with each other.
"These little bastards..."
Suga and Tanaka shivered as they heard Daichi mumble under his breath. They glanced at the freshmen, their expressions filled with pity.
Before long...
...all the freshmen were standing in line, their right ears red for some reason as Yamaguchi mumbled to himself, "I didn't do anything but why do I get it too?"
As the commotion settled, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi glanced at Tsuna curiously, clearly wondering who he was since they had never seen him at the club before.
Meanwhile, Kageyama blinked in surprise, and Hinata suddenly pointed at Tsuna, exclaiming loudly, "Ah! It's you!"
"...He's a senior, you moron!"
Hinata scratched his head awkwardly at this and said, "Ah, my apologies, senpai."
"It's fine. I don't care about that," Tsuna replied, shaking his head.
Hinata's eyes sparkled at his response as he mumbled, "Woah, he still has the aura!"
"Forget that. I fucking care about it now."
A vein popped out on Tsuna's forehead at the mention of the A-word.
Meanwhile, the others looked at their interaction oddly.
"It seems you and these duo have already met. This is Tsuna; he's a second-year and a member of the team," Daichi introduced Tsuna to the freshmen.
The blond with glasses was Tsukishima. The freckled boy was Yamaguchi. The loud orange-haired one and the serious black-haired one were Hinata and Kageyama.
Those were the names that registered in Tsuna's mind as Daichi continued.
"Alright, since everyone's here, as promised, we'll be doing a little test. You two," Daichi pointed at the freshmen and spoke, "will face each other."
"Tanaka will be on your side," Daichi said to Hinata and Kageyama before turning to Tsukishima and Yamaguchi. "And Tsuna will be on your side."
Clap!
"Let's start this as the first activity for the club today!" Daichi announced.
"Let's go!"
Hinata shouted excitedly, waving his hands in the air like a child.
Tsuna didn't pay much attention to the team composition as the door suddenly slid open. The familiar fragrance of perfume made his nose twitch slightly, and he sharply turned toward the door.
The sight of raven-black hair tucked behind one ear made his eyes light up as their eyes met.
"..."
Tsuna smiled at the sight of Shimizu's arrival.
However...
The smile on his lips froze as he saw Shimizu look away without even giving him a nod or a smile as a greeting.
"Oh, Shimizu, just on time. Could you help us with the referee role?"
"Un."
Tsuna watched as Shimizu nodded softly at the request, and he couldn't help but mumble, "...Is she mad at me?"
But why?
He had been so busy last year that he rarely saw her or even talked to her. Although they used to text often, once rehabilitation started and he signed a contract with his light novel publisher, Tsuna had barely texted her anymore.
There was almost no chance he had said something wrong with such little interaction.
"Dad said women can be quite confusing sometimes..." Tsuna mumbled, thinking, 'I think I'm starting to understand that now.'
"Whatever," Tsuna thought, walking over to the freshmen on his team, who seemed to already know each other.
He asked, "So, do you both have any plans?"
"...Not really."
"My apologies, senpai. We have nothing of the sort."
Tsukishima replied curtly, while Yamaguchi was more polite.
Tsuna nodded. "Alright then, listen up..."
Both of them exchanged a glance and decided to pay attention as Tsuna continued, "I have no plan either."
"...?"
"Just do what you can."
Tsuna patted them both on the shoulder. Tsukishima adjusted his glasses, while Yamaguchi gave him an awkward smile.
"Woaaahhh! We're gonna win this!"
"Yes sir!!!"
Meanwhile, on the other side, Tanaka and Hinata seemed to click instantly, shouting at the top of their lungs together. Kageyama quietly rolled his eyes to the side.
Watching from the sidelines, Daichi and Suga shook their heads before calling one of them over to decide which side would take the serve first.
They pulled out a coin for the decision, and after the choice was made, Tsuna's team got the serve.
With that...
"..."
Tsuna stood at the back of the line, holding the ball and staring at the other team across the net. Everyone felt tense just from the way he looked at them.
Kageyama and Hinata swallowed their saliva nervously as they looked at each other, both thinking the same thing, 'He really is... a sigma.'
