Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Experiment Failure?
In the afternoon, the Potions class was held together with Hufflepuff. Once again, Wade paired up with Theo, standing in the corner. Next to them were Ryan and a boy from Hufflepuff.
Michael and Padma were up front.
Wade noticed that at first, Padma was unwilling to pay attention to Michael. But after Michael said a few words and secretly handed something to her, the girl's anger quickly turned into happiness.
Ah, so that's how it is...
Wade shook his head secretly.
It wasn't surprising that Michael liked Padma, but he also liked other pretty girls. While they reconciled today, it was only a matter of time before they argued again.
But when it comes to relationships, it's like drinking water—only the drinker knows if it's warm or cold. Maybe they are just one of those couples who bicker and reconcile regularly?
Wade didn't dwell on it any further. Together with Theo, he headed to the storage cabinet at the back to retrieve the potion ingredients needed for class.
Looking at the dark and gloomy cabinet, Wade suddenly remembered something. He reached inside to feel around and, to his surprise, found two old and tattered copies of Advanced Potion-Making at the bottom.
"What's this?" Theo asked.
"It looks like old textbooks used by former students," Wade said as he casually flipped through one of them.
One of the books was filled with tiny, messy handwriting in the margins, even in the gaps between the printed text, making it nearly impossible to read.
Wade casually stuffed this one into his bag and put the other book, which had fewer notes, back in the cabinet.
While brewing the potion, Theo seemed hesitant, like he had something on his mind but didn't know how to say it.
"After dinner, we'll go to the eighth floor of the castle," Wade whispered.
Theo's eyes immediately lit up.
...
When Theo saw the Room of Requirement, he was astonished, despite coming from a wizarding family. And when he saw the Vanishing Cabinet, he was even more dumbfounded.
"This is the Vanishing Cabinet from the castle?" Theo asked. "I heard it was broken."
"I fixed it," Wade said. "I had originally planned to conduct an experiment with Remus today... Oh, Remus Lupin, he's my tutor... but now I have to serve detention with Professor Sprout."
Theo nodded, "Then leave the experiment to me... How should I contact Mr. Lupin?"
Wade took out the page for Remus from his Book of friends and handed it to Theo, also giving him a few important reminders.
Seeing that it was almost nine o'clock, Wade quickly headed out. He had just arrived at the entrance of Greenhouse Two when Professor Sprout appeared.
"Herbology is the foundation of Potions. Transfiguration, Divination, and Alchemy also often involve the use of herbs."
"But gifted wizard apprentices tend to focus only on the healing or poisonous properties of plants, overlooking their other uses..."
As she opened the greenhouse door, Professor Sprout continued, "Yet, it's often those overlooked aspects that form the basis of a plant's life. For example..."
A humid breeze filled the air as various green plants intertwined, creating a vibrant scene.
Professor Sprout smiled and asked Wade, "Do you know how plants sprout?"
...
When the detention—or rather, the lesson—ended, Wade left the greenhouse feeling an indescribable sense of awe.
In his hand was a seed gifted to him by Professor Sprout.
It was just an ordinary dandelion seed.
Its parent plant had been cultivated alongside many magical plants, so this seed carried a faint trace of magic as well.
This magic wouldn't turn it into a true magical plant or give it any special powers; it would merely make it grow a little stronger than its counterparts.
At least, that was the idea.
But right now, the dandelion seed was sprouting in Wade's palm, growing rapidly as its leaves unfolded.
Without any water or soil, a few small yellow flowers bloomed swiftly, only to wither in seconds, transforming into fluffy white spheres.
A breeze blew, scattering the dandelion seeds. The withered stem and leaves seemed to disintegrate into dust, leaving behind just a single seed that floated back into Wade's palm.
The same process repeated, as if the scene was on fast-forward.
"Life..."
Wade murmured the word, simple yet profound, and felt a vague sense of understanding stirring within him.
It wasn't just Herbology—Wade had even gained some insights into Animagus transformations and life alchemy.
...
There was still some time left before curfew, so Wade headed to the Room of Requirement.
Sure enough, Theo was still there, but he didn't look happy. Instead, he seemed troubled.
Hearing the door open, Theo turned around and sighed, "Wade, the experiment failed."
"What happened?" Wade was momentarily taken aback and walked over to ask.
He carefully inspected the magic rune circuits on the Vanishing Cabinet and found no defects.
"I'm not sure what's wrong. It works sometimes but not always."
In front of Theo was a sheet of parchment detailing each item that had been transmitted, noting whether the transfer was successful or not.
"We conducted a total of fifty experiments—thirty-seven succeeded, and thirteen failed. So about every five attempts, one or two would fail."
Theo had kept meticulous records. Wade noticed that the failure rate didn't increase with more magically powerful objects, indicating it was purely random.
"But the good news is that even when it fails, the objects or creatures being transmitted don't get damaged. It's like they're just stuck in the cabinet for a bit."
Theo looked at Wade and asked softly, "Is there something else that might not be fully repaired? Maybe we could ask Professor Murray."
Wade shook his head, "I'm sure it's fully repaired. I even made some improvements based on the methods Mr. Scamander taught me... Of course..."
He added with a hint of frustration, "Maybe there's something I missed, or the modifications aren't fully compatible. If I can't figure out the problem myself, I'll have no choice but to consult the professor..."
Perhaps he'd need to revert all the enchantments to their original state?
But Newt's methods were definitely better, and Wade knew enough about magic to be sure of that without relying on any "protagonist's luck."
He inspected the Vanishing Cabinet repeatedly but still couldn't identify the issue.
Consulting Professor Murray was an option, but Wade didn't really want to. It felt like a student at a normal school asking their teacher for advice on how to look cool while skipping class.
Seeing Wade deep in thought, Theo, though unsure what Wade was trying to figure out from the cabinet, stayed quietly by his side and thought over the evening's experiments to see if he could spot any patterns.
Suddenly, Theo noticed something.
"Wade," Theo said, "you mentioned you made improvements to this Vanishing Cabinet..."
"Yes," Wade sighed.
"Then..." Theo hesitated, uncertain if his guess was correct, "did you also improve the other cabinet?"
Wade abruptly turned to look at him, then smacked his own forehead.
"I can't believe I was so stupid... Theo, you're a genius!"
He finally understood why the experiments had failed!
