Chapter 413: Chapter 413: The Situation
Although the Kingdom of Stormwind temporarily eased its war with the orcs thanks to intelligence from Karazhan, the leaders of Stormwind City grew increasingly concerned about the future, even spiraling into despair.
They realized that the orcs were not native creatures of the Swamp of Sorrows, but conquerors who had crossed through a massive portal—the Dark Portal—arriving from another dimension.
Initially, their assessment of the orc forces was entirely based on the supplies that the Swamp of Sorrows could provide.
After all, only with enough food could a race thrive and maintain a sufficient fighting force.
The land around the Swamp was simply not capable of supporting a large orc population, which was why they remained optimistic about their chances in the war, even against individual orcs who far outclassed humans.
However, the facts now told them that they were terribly mistaken.
The orc tribes originated from the planet Draenor, where they had an entire world to flourish, and the Swamp of Sorrows was merely a forward outpost for them.
This meant that the orc numbers far exceeded their expectations, and a steady stream of orcs would be coming to Azeroth through the Dark Portal.
The Kingdom of Stormwind could not face the orc tribes' assault on its own.
Of course, this also meant that the orcs would soon launch a full-scale attack.
Whether due to the harsh conditions of Draenor or the meager resources of the Swamp of Sorrows, the orc horde would soon confront a food shortage, and the solution to that problem was, of course, war.
Winning would yield food, while losing would eliminate the unproductive but resource-consuming population.
This was the typical mentality of the orc tribes and the strategy they would undoubtedly employ.
Thus, the Kingdom of Stormwind sent multiple pleas for help to the human nations of the Eastern Kingdoms, repeatedly emphasizing the threat the orcs posed to all human society.
Dalaran also received further warnings about the orcs potentially being the vanguard of demons.
While one or two requests for assistance from Stormwind might have been seen as a joke, the dire circumstances eventually forced the human nations of the Eastern Kingdoms to acknowledge the reality of the orc invasion.
Consequently, King Terenas Menethil of the Kingdom of Lordaeron, the most powerful of the human nations and the one most closely aligned with Stormwind, took it upon himself to stand up and began sending envoys to the other human kingdoms as well as to the dwarves and elves.
He hoped to rally all the nations' armies and form a military alliance to combat the orc invasion together.
Unfortunately, most were short-sighted; these nations could be described as those who wouldn't shed tears until they saw the coffin.
They were not on the same continent as Stormwind. Although Stormwind had already suffered greatly from the orcs and was on the brink of economic collapse, the danger still felt distant, separated by a vast sea.
Many, including King Genn Greymane of Gilneas and King Aedreth Perenolde of Alterac, harbored deep doubts about whether to establish an alliance.
While their shortsightedness and isolationism played a role, there were also other factors to consider.
Among them was Deathwing.
Having betrayed the Dragon Aspects, Deathwing had developed a keen interest in the orcs.
Corrupted by the Old Gods, he recognized the potential of the orcs to destroy the mortal races of Azeroth.
He believed that the orcs were a tool he could exploit—even if their original masters were the ancient enemies of the Old Gods, the Burning Legion.
Thus, the orcs became a coveted prize contested by both the Burning Legion and the Old Gods.
The Burning Legion sought to use the orcs to undermine the mortal forces of Azeroth, laying the groundwork for their next invasion, while the Old Gods hoped the orcs would sow chaos in Azeroth.
Both factions were intent on preventing Azeroth from finding peace.
To avoid drawing the attention of other dragons, Deathwing frequently transformed into mortal forms to create chaos:
First, he disguised himself as a noble from Stormwind visiting Lordaeron, spreading the word that the "horde invasion" was merely an excuse for Stormwind to suppress internal unrest.
To prevent Lordaeron from coming to Stormwind's aid, Deathwing enchanted the thoughts of some nobles, stopping them from taking action against the horde.
Then, he impersonated an orc and infiltrated orc circles, managing to deceive even the orc war chief, Blackhand, and the warlock Gul'dan.
Seizing the opportunity, he hinted at the existence of the Dragon Soul to tempt the orcs into obtaining it and controlling the dragonkin.
As a result of these various factors, the formation of a united alliance among the nations proceeded at an excruciatingly slow pace.
Terenas had to expend great effort convincing the nobles and the leaders of other nations to recognize the stakes and understand that forming an alliance was the most sensible and long-term choice.
However, not all news was grim.
Given the urgency of the situation, King Terenas Menethil began establishing refugee camps in Southshore, located along the southern coastline of Lordaeron, preparing for the possibility of Stormwind falling and the temporary northward relocation of its populace.
On the other hand, while nations hesitated to commit troops to the alliance, they still offered some assistance to the Kingdom of Stormwind.
Food supplies were continuously sent from the ports to Stormwind City, ensuring that the kingdom, having gathered most of its citizens but lost a significant portion of its farmland, would not collapse due to starvation.
Dalaran also dispatched more investigators and the first wave of reinforcements, including two archmages and several skilled mages.
Their purpose was twofold: further studying the orcs and confirming the presence of demonic powers, and supporting the troops of Stormwind on the battlefield as a mage contingent.
In summary, as time progressed, the situation in the Kingdom of Stormwind grew increasingly dire.
Elwynn Forest became a battleground for small-scale skirmishes, with every stronghold and town being contested repeatedly, resulting in daily casualties among both orc and human forces.
As the largest town near the capital, Goldshire was now entirely devoid of ordinary citizens, having transformed into a military fortress.
Under Alaric's suggestion, the soldiers adopted urban warfare tactics.
If they could not withstand the orc assault, they would retreat into the town, hiding in any courtyard, tower, house, or alley to launch ambushes against any orcs entering.
This forced the orcs to engage them street by street. Utilizing their positional advantage, the soldiers inflicted heavy casualties on the orcs, significantly lowering the loss ratio and resulting in substantial orc losses.
Meanwhile, the Stormwind army could dispatch reinforcements from Stormwind City while the orcs were bogged down in Goldshire, coordinating their efforts to repel the orc advances.
Through this strategy, Goldshire became a bloody meat grinder for the orcs, a nightmarish stronghold that consumed orc lives relentlessly as they tried to assault Stormwind City.
