49. The Prologue Finally Ends
A month can feel both long and short. Over the past month, Ling Ning’s life had been filled to the brim—maybe even too full. Aside from work, it was all about writing her novel. There was barely any time left for rest or leisure, not to mention the neglect of her daughter. If this had happened in the past, she would have lost her mind.
When Ling Ning received her half-month salary from Chu Mengyao, it marked one full month of working at the café. It also meant that her school term was about to begin, which wasn’t particularly good news for her. After all, once school started, her monthly salary would change to an hourly wage.
And Ling Ning was currently in her senior year of high school, which meant less time for part-time work. Less time working meant less money, and without money, she’d have no choice but to seek… alternative means of income. That was an utterly devastating thought for her.
Though she still had a part-time modeling job through Qin Qing, photoshoots weren’t always available. Thus, she was already thinking about finding yet another job.
In this half-month’s salary, the commission alone was more than her basic wage for the entire month. For that, she had to thank that persistent “customer from hell.” If it hadn’t been for him, she wouldn’t have earned such a hefty commission.
With only three days left before the school term began, Chu Mengyao gave Ling Ning a three-day vacation. Xia You also got a break since she attended the same school and was in the same grade as Ling Ning, just in a different class—something Ling Ning hadn’t realized until Xia You mentioned it.
With all this free time on her hands, Ling Ning didn’t know what to do. After some thought, she eventually pulled out her textbooks and started studying. Unlike typical transmigration protagonists, she couldn’t retain all the things she’d learned after so many years. She had long forgotten most of it.
But there’s a fundamental difference between having studied something before and learning it for the first time. Those who have studied something before still have vague impressions of it, and if they study it again, they can grasp it far more quickly.
After so many years, picking up a textbook again was… indescribable.
Although this world was somewhat different from her previous one, it was largely similar. Mathematics, physics, and chemistry were almost identical.
The biggest changes were in geography. Places like the Maiden Dress Mountain Range, Maiden Dress Strait, Old Yharnam, Undead Street, and Gotham City—Ling Ning swore she’d never visit any of those places in her lifetime.
As Ling Ning was deeply immersed in her studies, Ling Ye was also engrossed in hers, using a smartphone to study as well. After all, when Ling Ning started school, she too would lose her study time. She had to make the most of it now.

Three days passed quickly. During that time, Ling Ning was absorbed in studying, even registering for school online. The rest of her time was spent reading. And just like that, it was time for the new school term to begin.
On the first day of school, being late was out of the question. Ling Ning set her alarm for six in the morning and got up early. After washing up and preparing breakfast, she got stuck in a dilemma while picking out her clothes.
After all, it was her first day back at school since transmigrating—what should she wear? Her eyes roamed her wardrobe, and as someone with chronic indecisiveness, she finally gave up, closed her eyes, and picked something at random.
And so, she ended up with a white dress in her hands. Ling Ning stared blankly at it. How had it come to this? Eighty percent of her wardrobe was filled with pants, and yet she ended up with this?
Unwilling to accept it, Ling Ning tossed the white dress aside and tried her luck again, eyes closed. This time, she picked a black chiffon gown. She glanced at it and tossed it aside again… and again…
After trying five dresses, she finally gave up. She grabbed a T-shirt and a pair of jeans, put them on, and realized that the tightness of the pants was far less comfortable than the freedom of a dress. Sure, dresses could be a bit risky, but that airy feeling was just irresistible.
Ling Ning suddenly realized she had started to enjoy the feeling of wearing dresses. Habit really was a terrifying thing.
Feeling the constriction around her legs, she glanced at the discarded dresses. After a moment of hesitation, she opted for a sky-blue dress. Pride? Masculinity? She’d already thrown those away when she donned that maid outfit. She was a genuine girl now—no “DIO” nonsense here.
Indeed, wearing a dress felt far more comfortable. Gazing at the pretty girl in the mirror, she nodded. Today, she was full of energy, as always!
Once everything was ready, Ling Ning announced, “Mission start!”
It was her first time going out in a dress other than the maid outfit, and she felt an odd sense of novelty.
The school she attended wasn’t far from her house. A leisurely walk took about half an hour, but she had spent too much time choosing an outfit. She had to quicken her pace, though thankfully her shoes didn’t have high heels. Otherwise, she’d be suffering.
Ling Ning made it to school just in time. Stepping into the campus again felt surreal. Although she had never actually attended this school, the memories from the original “Ling Ning” made every corner of it feel strangely familiar.
Perhaps because only the senior year students were here, the campus seemed quiet, with just a few scattered students walking about.
Ling Ning effortlessly found her way to the teaching building. Her former classroom was on the second floor, but now it had been moved to the third.
As she climbed to the third floor, she suddenly remembered something important. After starting senior year, the students were reallocated into new classes, and she had forgotten to check which one she had been placed in. Now there were five classes in front of her. What to do?
As she stood there in a daze, a familiar voice called out to her.
“Ling Ning, why are you just standing there? Aren’t you going in?”
It was Xu Qing.
Ling Ning turned to see Xu Qing staring at her, looking puzzled.
“I, uh… I forgot which class I’m in…” Ling Ning replied, a bit embarrassed. Forgetting which class she was in was such an awkward blunder.
“Oh~” Xu Qing looked at her, trying hard not to laugh, though her twisted expression betrayed her efforts.
“You’re in my class—Class Three,” Xu Qing said, pointing to the classroom door.
“Oh…”
