64. Nothing Much to Complain About in This Chapter
It was a typical recess, with a few girls gossiping about the latest scandals in the entertainment world, discussing which celebrities had cheated, or who had come out. Among them, a round-faced girl suddenly chimed in, “Hey, did you know? Our classmate Ling Ning is actually an escort! Someone saw her going in and out of fancy apartments a lot.”
“What?! Really? She doesn’t seem like that type at all.”
“Of course! Listen, I’ll tell you all about it.” The round-faced girl grinned mysteriously and continued, “Do you know what Ling Ning used to be like?”
The others shook their heads.
“I used to be in the same class as her. She used to be this gloomy girl, always scowling, kind of like that guy Li Si from the next class over,” she explained. Li Si was a quiet, brooding boy known for his dark demeanor, similar to Ling Ning’s former self.
Seeing the shocked expressions on her friends’ faces, the round-faced girl nodded with satisfaction, adding, “What would cause such a big change in just over a month? Just look at the clothes she wears now. I saw one of her outfits in Goddess magazine—it cost at least a thousand. How could a student afford that?”
“So naturally, she must be doing… you know.” The round-faced girl didn’t bother to lower her voice, and everyone nearby heard her loud and clear.
“And don’t you notice how she always looks half-awake? She must be out all night working,” she added, giving Ling Ning a jealous glance. She resented how Ling Ning, once as plain as her, had become stunningly beautiful, making her feel overshadowed and envious.
“I also heard from my neighbor’s wife’s daughter’s friend’s cousin’s sister that Ling Ning already has a daughter who’s about to start middle school.”
“No way, that can’t be true!” someone protested.
“Of course, it’s true! I wouldn’t share this if we weren’t close friends! Just don’t spread it around,” she said, pretending to be concerned, though she was secretly hoping it would spread like wildfire.
Li Qian, who was eavesdropping nearby, remained expressionless. She had planned to gather more evidence before exposing Ling Ning. But now that the round-faced girl had blown things out of proportion, there was no way this rumor would hold up without proof. And saying Ling Ning had a daughter already in middle school? That was just absurd. Who has a daughter at six or seven?
But still, Li Qian figured that as long as it ruined Ling Ning’s reputation, it didn’t really matter if the details were accurate. Ever since Ling Ning’s transformation, Li Qian had noticed her own popularity fading, made worse by the presence of girls like Xu Qing and Xia You.
“That’s enough, Round Face! Don’t spread baseless rumors. Ling Ning isn’t like that!” Xu Qing finally snapped, unable to take it any longer.
“Round Face?!” Furious at the nickname, the round-faced girl pulled out her phone and showed them a series of photos. “Here’s your proof.”
The photos appeared to show Ling Ning being photographed without her knowledge on a Sunday, right as she was entering Qin Qing’s building. Another shot showed her getting out of Qin Qing’s car and accepting money from her. With such misleading pictures, some of the students started believing Round Face’s story.
“Well? There’s your evidence,” Round Face said smugly.
Xu Qing saw the photos and found herself momentarily at a loss. Then Xia You spoke up, “Take a closer look at the hand handing over the money—notice the red nail polish?”
The others inspected the picture closely and saw that the hand was indeed wearing red nail polish. Despite the photo’s blurriness, the bright red nails were unmistakable.
“Look at how delicate the hand is—it’s clearly a woman’s hand.”
Round Face stammered, then muttered stubbornly, “Well, maybe it’s her… madam or something?”
Just as Xu Qing moved to confront her, a hand suddenly stopped her. Ling Ning, looking drowsy as ever, gave Xu Qing a sleepy glance and murmured, “It’s fine. Let them talk.”
“Aren’t you angry, hearing them say such things about you?”
“Why should I be?” Ling Ning replied lazily.
“…” Xu Qing was left speechless.
“If I got angry every time someone talked badly about me, I’d be dead from stress. Let them say what they want. Their mouths belong to them, not me. Time will prove who’s right and who’s wrong, and we’ll see who gets embarrassed then.” With that, Ling Ning lay back down on her desk and drifted off.
Li Qian observed her with curiosity. She couldn’t understand how Ling Ning could stay so calm—maybe even too calm.
“This might turn out to be interesting…”

“The latest issue of Goddess is out! Let’s see what’s trending now.”
After another class, a group of girls gathered around Round Face, who held a fresh copy of Goddess, a popular fashion magazine that covered the latest trends in clothing, hairstyles, nails, skincare, and more. Each issue featured interviews with notable figures from various fields, making it a must-read for many.
“I heard this issue has an interview with Qin Qing, the former head designer for Miracle Nikki!” one of the girls said excitedly.
“Yeah! I wonder what new designs Ms. Qin has come up with this time!”
Round Face smirked proudly. She had a relative working at the printing press, allowing her to get each issue a day early.
With eager anticipation, she opened the magazine.
